Beautiful girls get compliments about their looks all the time, so they get used to them. What makes their day is the compliment about their intelligence, knowledge, etc. (Say "beautiful" to smart ladies).

And that is why the comic is great.

Once, my family and I went to visit some distant relative who had made it rich in some business or another (real estate, I think?). He took us out to an amazingly fancy dinner, and told the waiter to send his compliments to the chef. First time I had ever heard someone say that, but what was really amazing was that the chef came out to thank my distant relative. They ended up talking for a bit and getting a picture together.

I was a lot younger then, and was too fascinated that meals even existed in the $40 per head price range.

My wife's extremely wealthy aunt took us out to dinner late one evening. She enjoyed the finer things in life, but she also happened to enjoy ketchup on her steak. She (half-jokingly) begged the waiter not to tattle on her to the chef. Apparently the waiter ratted her out because halfway through the meal the chef came out and said "So I hear you've been defiling my steak with ketchup". The look on the aunt's face was priceless. The chef was kidding, of course, and we all had a good laugh.

Later the chef brought us a huge ice cream sundae with hot fudge, fresh straberries, and real whipped cream.

I used to work at a restaurant where the head chef was a tall, over weight, sweaty, vulgar, alcoholic and generally crude man. Once, during a particularly busy weekend night, a table told me to give their compliments to the chef, we had an exchange that went something like this:

"Chef! Fire entrees for table 27!" "They're already down. You have an app order for the big party yet?!" "Ringing it in now chef. Hey chef?" "Yeah?" "You're a handsome man." "Damn right I am."

    The link is just a tumblr repost. At the bottom, it says via swisserswatter.tumblr.com. Tracing it back, it seems to be attributed to a post on Explosm's forums that was removed for whatever reason. The artist it is attributed to is Zebbs. I got too lazy to look any further.

      I don't like this comic at all. I think people are more entertained by the face of the chef in the last panel than anything else.

      This comic is based on a punchline that has no logical foundation. The customer clearly complimented the quality of the food when he said "this food is delicious", then he told the waiter to, "give my compliments to the chef". While the plural form of compliment in this request opens the door for some ambiguity, the clear intention of the request is for the waiter to share the compliment about the food. The customer never said anything about the chef being handsome so the waiter should have never said it in response to the customer's request.
