I love this show. I always crack up when they leave huge chunks of the production of a product out because it is made somewhere else. It always goes something like:

  1. A robot cuts a canoe shape out of the mold and applies glue
  2. The rest of the canoe is made in another part of the factory
  3. And that's how you make a canoe.

I bet a lot of that can be attributed to trade secret, like the Coke recipe or something.

Actually I think the main reason is cost. I bet this show uses one of the smallest budgets ever. Watch the end credits and laugh at how small the entire crew is. I believe most of it is written and directed by the same guy too. I imagine the production is something like this:

Get permission to film a factory line, ask questions about the process while filming. Write narration. Read narration and play back over film.

Or when it's something which is impossibly complex relative to the time they have available:

And this is the factory where the helicopter's rotors are made exterior shot of factory.

I only seem to find the episodes where they are just packaging it.

  1. They receive canoes from their shipper here, in receiving.
  2. Paint is applied to the canoes, see all the different color combinations (3) ?
  3. The canoes are packaged and shipped to their customers!

Watch the intro. The letters that are flashed are not "HOW ITS MADE", but instead, "HOW I MAD". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDZhN3Vik3c

That's how little money they put into production. How it's made is probably the most lucrative show on tv right now, considering it can be exported to anywhere in the world with only a new narrator.

I believe the show is produced in Canada. I think they do that so they can quickly turn it around for Le Quebecois.

You know. Wine drinkers. Pea soup eaters. French Canadians!

[–]mrpopenfresh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am a french canadian, and actually worked right besides the productions companies office for a couple years. You can notice that the first few seasons, most of the manufacturing is companies from Québec. The new ones are more american though, and I guess the more episodes they produce, the further they will need to go to get some fresh footage.

If you watch the show enough, a lot of the products have the How It's Made logo on it, so they often have to purchase a lot of the things that are, well, made.

[–]mrpopenfresh 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They get one custom made product. I'm sure it's a very small part of the budget and is a great keepsake for the production company.

..today on How it's made

btw: they had a marathon on memorial day (in the US) and they played every show back to back, 24/7 with no repeats and it ran from Friday night all the way to the next tuesday. I was glued to the tv for most of the weekend.

[–]DerMann 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck yes. It started early Friday morning, and ended at Sunday at midnight, if I recall correctly. As you said, it was only How It's Made, no other shows at all, with only commercial interruption and no repeats (although some episodes did overlap some products).

I prepared well for the event, purchased an eighth of dro, a fifth of good scotch, and plenty of salty snacks and soft drinks. Apart from sleeping (only 6-8 hours a night), I experienced that marathon beginning to end.

The only problem is that I can't watch that show anymore because I've seen at least 85% of the episodes :\

I prepared well for the event, purchased an eighth of dro, a fifth of good scotch, and plenty of salty snacks and soft drinks

wow! you were much better prepared that I was.

in my area they show it at 6 and 6:30pm, right after work. I don't even mind repeats, there is just something hypnotic about watching thousands of bottles of salad dressing being made, or the laborious process of making a saddle.

  • drink when time is sped up / slowed down
  • guess an opening pun- everyone else drinks
  • drink when a proprietary step or ingredient is left out
  • drink for every pun
  • drink when a machine is named exactly for what it does (the bolter bolts on bolts)

Love that show! My favorite of all time: Hatchery Chicks

You're sitting there mesmerized by plastic moulding, and then all of a sudden: Animal abuse!

I cried at that episode. Who cries at how its made?! Poor chicks, thrown around like they're nothing... :(

[–]beanso 6 points7 points ago

They're tiny little things, I doubt the impact is of any significance to an animal that size. Granted, it's kinda disconcerting to see living beings processed as if they're inanimate objects.

[–]alexistukov 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The show is funded/broadcast by Discovery Channel Canada, then dubbed with a more American narrator for consumption in the USA.

Science Channel held the original rights to broadcast the American dub, so I assume Discovery Channel America purchased temporary broadcast rights that have now expired.

Is the script the same? I like the show, but it seems dumbed down. They rarely mention the correct names of the machinery used, which never fails to irritate me.

i.e. 'carver' for automated shaper. 'Circular saw' for table saw, 'grinder' for wide-belt sander, etc. (From the last show I saw, every show does this crap.)

What's wrong with learning the correct terms for things?

[–]taoistextremist 0 points1 point ago

Lesson Learned.

I used to watch this waaay too much. If there was ever a marathon I'd be watching it. I used to watch all of them when they would air entire blocks as filler. I have always adored learning how things are made and how they work and have since I took apart the first "toy" that I ever had that was actually a device to help me learn to speak (I was that young.) I didn't learn so much in that instance but I did take the device completely apart and put it all back together and it worked afterwards (big accomplishment for me back then XD )

[–]jackfrostbyte 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I once thought of a quote about the different species of apes vs what they'd do with a camera and this reminded me of it so much. It went something along the lines of a gorilla with ignore it - a chimp will take it apart - and an orangutan will take it apart and reassemble it and it will work again. Not to consider you an orangutan mind you, but they are pretty cool if rather unsocial. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orangutan#Social_life

Cudos though, you should tinker now that you're an adult (I assume) now. I've been meaning to try myself. Maybe something small like a candle lit engine?

[–]colourofawesome 4 points5 points ago

It's ok man, I feel the same way. I mean I'm interested in how things are made, I love learning and documentaries. I love behind the scenes stuff about what goes in to everyday parts of life we don't think about, but I just find the show itself unapealing for some reason.

To me it might as well be called "Footage of assembly lines with upbeat music."

I used to watch this show but finally got bored with it. I think it was the narrator's voice.

I can literally sit and watch this forever. I will then be able to make everything. Knowledge is power.

A day well spent - and I must confess I never would have found the Science Channel if Reddit hadn't told me they were having a "Firefly" marathon some weeks ago!

I fucking hate How Its Made. Comes on right after Cash Cab, but before Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, ruins my weekday evening flow.

...Maybe i just like game shows.

I think this show is fascinating, but the narrator's voice is one of the worst on television.

I wonder if this post would have gotten as much karma had you posted a text link that said "I spent all day watching 'How it's Made.'

Probably not, because this isnt fucking Facebook.
