If I recall correctly, the genes for red and green color vision are located on the X chromosome. Which allows a significant percentage of women to have two slightly different variations of the genes active simultaneously (which is also why color-blindness is more common in men than women). So, it's not that women just arbitrarily have more color words than men. Many women can actually distinguish more colors than men. What I find interesting is that the percentage of women with greater color discrimination is still a bit less than 50%, yet women seem to universally use more color words.

I would say it's a small group of women. First she would need a mutant gene (not too uncommon e.g. colour-blindness in men) then she would also need to have two different x-chromosomes expressed in different eyes (very uncommon e.g. heterochromia in women).

Moreover, I worked as a colour match technician (creating custom colours for a stucco company) and I can tell you that nearly all of those colour names are made up. One company's "salmon" will be another company's "ocean sunset" and a third company's "pastel pink".

The figures I mentioned are acurate (1) (2).

Not at all uncommon, and heterochromia doesn't enter into the equation because most of the genetics for eye color are on chromosome 15. Take a look at a calico cat to get a sense of how frequently a different X will be active in each eye.

well TIL. However keep in mind that x-chromosome deactivation occurs much later in development in cats than in humans (therefore cats have more and smaller patches).

Also, my point still stands that most of those colour names are meaningless.

Well, I think I figured out where the pink comes from. Looking at pictures of salmon on wiki, their skin has pink in it. But I assume the pink is on the scales that gets scraped off after catching? ...'cause I buy Salmon filets quite often, and the outside of the skin never has pink in it.

So it's kind of silly calling it Salmon Pink, because most people in the world don't fish, and they would have never seen a Salmon fresh enough to make that connection.

Seafoam (or seafoam green) is a color, but wtf spindrift? I don't even think that's a thing.

Ah sorry, I wasn't even paying enough attention to notice that, I thought you were saying sea foam wasn't a color.

I'm sure there's a Chuck Testa joke to be made here, but I shall let this opportunity pass...

Men are like Windows 95. We can only see the basic colors.

Windows 95 is more advanced, it can distinguish between 256 colors.

It's a quote from a comedian. Honestly, I can't even remember if he said 95 or some other version. Just remembered the analogy because it's so perfect.

Notice how an awful lot of the names women use for colors, are edible things.
