Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

My thoughts exactly. I was going to excitedly post my findings, but decided to be sensible and see if someone beat me to it. Upvote to you sir.

[–]Buns_Of_Awesomeness 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is based on my personal observation so I'm not going to say it's fact, just what I think.

Help. Help. Help. This is what I wanted, you can have some too. That's essentially what the cat is trying to get across. There isn't really a "thank you" in their "language" so much as acknowledgement of shared effort.

[–]cbeducation 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My cat has a pretty extensive vocabulary of distinct meows. he has:

  • hey

  • you scared me

  • what's up

  • feed me

  • play with me

  • I'm really bored

  • wow

  • OMG THIS IS SO COOL (usually when he's doing something bad... if I hear this one I have to stop what I'm doing and 99/100 he's doing something wrong)

  • THAT WAS AWESOME.. I'M GOING GO GET IT.

  • OMG OMG OMG OMG THERE'S A BIRD OUTSIDE.

..... and many more.

What I find REALLY interesting is that people who don't have cats can't understand him.

I'd love to do an analysis of people and what they THINK a cat is saying without any video context.

[–]LordMaejikan 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

  • Where did you go.
  • Why can't I go in there?

[–]bvanman 4 points5 points ago

You should make that video. I've always been a dog person, I wonder how I would do.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This exactly. Only one of our cats is really chatty, and we know EXACTLY what she's saying at any given time. She will even respond with the appropriate vocal inflection when you ask her a question, or chastise her about something (everything from, "Do you want a treat?", to "No, you can't go out on the back porch.")

We're pretty sure SHE thinks that she's speaking English.

[–]ZhuangZ2 39 points40 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That wasn't a thank you. that was "Fucking finally.. Dick!" Cat's rarely feel gratitude

He takes a painful bite there..

[–]asdf7890 86 points87 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah, that looks like a carrying bite, as used when picking kittens up to move them. Designed to hold, and unless you struggle nothing will get pierced or scratched. And carrying is what the cat intends rather than damage: this hand should be over here, come on human, get with the picture...

The cat isn't moving the hand either (to do that it probably would have to bite hard enough to break the skin), just pushing a bit and the human is taking the hint and doing the rest of the work.

Bright cat though. I wonder how long it and the human have known each other, to have had time to develop the routine.

[–]ill_upvote_u 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it would just be a little pinch if you want to be serous.

If they were together since it was a kitten, it doesn't have to have been too long.

[–]r_spiders_link 67 points68 points ago

Actually, a lot of cats masturbate orally. Whenever they lick their goods, they often do it as much for cleaning as they do for pleasure. There's a vet site that talks about it, screen shot here.

[–]eviljelloman 13 points14 points ago

If the same comment came from a republican trashing Obama, you'd probably be calling him an ignorant partisan moron.

Bush accomplished some great things. He also accomplished some completely horrible things, which I personally believe vastly outweighed the good. But praising that comment as if it's high quality, even for youtube? It reeks of "lets hate that guy because he's on the other team" kneejerk douchebaggery directed at Bush.

increased funding for the NSF and NIH, signed the clear skies initiative which was intended to produce some serious cuts in all kinds of air pollution, not just co2, broke new ground in terms of appointing minorities to key cabinet positions, created tons of new federally protected park land, etc. They might not be big button issues like the illegal wars he started or the money he funneled to his criminal friends on wall street, but he DID accomplish many things, some of them even positive. To act as if he didn't do ANYTHING of value during eight years holding the position of the most powerful person in the world is pretty damned myopic.

...a song which was ironically successful, since Stefani wrote it to mock "stupid dance music."

Here it is:

As part of Stefani's vision of creating "a silly dance record",[1] the song is influenced by 1980s dance and pop music. The song was written by Stefani, Pharrell Williams, and Chad Hugo as a response to Courtney Love's statement that Stefani was a "cheerleader" in an interview with Seventeen magazine.

Then meowed a few times while looking at me, and the Dug it's claw into the back of my hand, moved it onto it's body, and started guiding my hand in the petting motion.

Since it jumped back up every time I put it down, I eventually managed to pawn it off on a little brother.

TL:DNR: Moms cat forced my hand.

I was watching a documentary recently about dogs and they claimed domesticated dogs were the only species to look to humans for assistance in a task. They even tried it with chimps and the chimps wouldn't catch the cues...

There was a really great one a few years ago, where they showed the difference between dogs and wolves (sorry, I can't find it online).

In one test they had some meat suspended in the middle of a small cage (probably around 4'x4'). It is just big enough so the animals cannot reach in and grab the meat.

A tester brings the wolf to the cage, and it immediately tries to work the cage door. When that fails, the wolf slowly goes apeshit on the cage, trying more and more desperately to open it (he tries to bend the bars; tries hitting; tries to throw it). This goes on for about a at least a minute (at least what they showed), then the wolf just gives up.

The dog on the other hand basically paws at various parts of the cage for 10 seconds, gives up, then switches between looking at the tester and looking at the cage until the tester opens the cage for him. It's so funny and cute at the same time.

People make such a big deal about chimpanzees using tools but it seems like there are many animals that do.

[–]NonPermissive 60 points61 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe "using tools" is how cats see the entire relationship between themselves and us.

It's worth remembering that in prehistory, man domesticated dogs, but cats domesticated man.

"Domesticated" is probably the wrong word. It started out as a meh-symbiotic relationship: we put up with the cats as they got rid of vermin that were much more of a pest to us and our grain stores, and the cats put up with us because our towns attracted an easy food supply for them in the form of that vermin. Once this acceptance had properly set in a begrudging respect started to form, and the rest is history.

Were it not for the fact that our grain stores attracted and supported colonies of mice/rats/what-ever those thousands of years ago, the domestic cat as we know it would not exist today. Neither us nor the cat explicitly chose each other, it just seemed to make sense.

It is not unique to primates at all. Check out some youtube videos of the mimic octopus. Give it a couple thousand years, if those bitches find a way to breathe air....we're all fucked.

They already have - they've disguised themselves as cats the whole time.

I really wouldn't say these two situations are at all the same. Chimpanzees will teach themselves, but this cat's owner probably spent hours slowly getting the cat to realize that if he does X human will do Y.

--edit--

Actually when it comes to cat treats I have example. We always keep a bag in the same place, and eventually my cat started pawing at it to try, and get it open. So we'd give him some. He does it again. We give him some. This keeps going until you just seem him tapping on the bag, and looking at us. He knows he doesn't have to try, and bite it open. Now, even if there's no bag of treats he'll just go to the bowl where we usually keep them, and tap whatever's in it.

There are many different types of regular house cats. Some are small and lean, and if you keep them on a good, species appropriate diet, they will stay lean.

I had a cat a while ago that was half wild. She would, as a kitten, always just attack my hand and gnaw at it all the time. She would do that kicking thing after having hold with my hand with her back claws. If she knows you're playing, she would do any serious damage. Sure she would leave scratches on me but nothing to serious, she was just to damn cute. As she got older she would do the thing cats do when they wanted scratching, endlessly rub their head on your hand. She would do that but then bite on my hand. Cats know how to not hurt though, she would put her mouth around my hand but not clamp down at all. Cats are surprisingly smart.

[–]ClownsAteMyBaby 7 points8 points ago

Yeah my dad and my dog had a routine where the dog would put his fist in his mouth and gnaw on it, but never with any real pressure.

Did you ever think it was weird that your dad had dog paws in his mouth?

[–]twocats 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah, when they play or try to carry something it doesn't hurt much, nor do the playful scratches, even when they get rough. My hands are filled with scratches and I still won't stop playing with the little nutcase.

I don't wanna know how it hurts when they actually try to hurt or kill something!

Yeah I'm a little skeptical about this as well. They move their hand away from the camera and then the cat immediately bites the hand, I think there's some trickery and catnip involved.

[–]asdf7890 15 points16 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah, from the cats point of view it is the same move as used when moving a kitten. I want this <grab> to be over here <drop>. It probably did this as a hint once and the human knew enough about cat body language and behaviour to realise what the cat understood "hand opens box" and was trying to make that happen. From then on the behaviour is reinforced as the cat learns to give the right hints and the human responds in the right way.

If the human had not realised early on what the cat was trying to do, instead taking the "bite" as an aggressive action, the cat would have just stopped and never developed the full routine.

No catnip required. Just a bright cat, a knowledgeable (and pliable) human, and some little time.

If my cat is in the mood for a fuss and I'm working, she'll try push her head under my right hand to dislodge and replace the mouse. Not quite as complex a behaviour as having worked out hand+box=open, but the same learning pattern: she gave a hint, I reacted in a desired way, this repeated, a line of communication was formed.
