Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It had precisely the opposite effect on me. It just said: 'Here be cold death.'

That's beautiful.

Why is the water so blue?

Mattperin's answer is actually correct, but misleadingly so. The water appears to be very blue because the ice underneath the water is exceptionally blue. The water flowing over the glacier has melted off the oxygen-rich surface ice to expose the extremely oxygen poor blue ice below it.

Glacial ice comes from ice fields at high altitude. Essentially, snow falls up on the top of a mountain and produces very deep fields of snow and ice. The weight of all this snow compresses the bottom layers, turning the snow to ice and the ice (which has air bubbles in it) to blue ice, which is just ice minus the air bubbles. It is the presence of air bubbles that gives ice its "white" color. Once the air bubbles have been pushed out of the ice, it becomes clear with a very slight reflection on the blue end of the spectrum. Thus, when you have extremely thick sheets of it, as glaciers do, the ice appears not clear but as having a deep blue shade.

The reason for the color is the same reason that deep water appears blue. Small amounts of water are clear but actually water reflects small amounts of blue light, due to the oxygen-hydrogen bonds in H20. Thus if you have a lot of water it will appear blue. The same effect is at work when considering blue ice.

Glaciers are famous for their blue color because of this.

The black substance is actually pollution and it gathers together when individual specs are heated by the sun. Really it is not a good thing at all even though kind to the eyes.

It's most likely glacial moraine, actually. It gets churned up into the glacier as it grinds over the rock underneath. Much of this debris ends up on the surface of the glacier, and will pool in streams like these.
