Most likely where "his rich parents live."

Have you ever been outside? What the hell does rich parents have to do with a spectacular river spot? If anything, this should be "where his smart parents live".

Not to be an ass or anything but that is most likely a lake or a spring. I don't think there's a river in the world that clear.

It's a quarry, and they're almost all that clear.

Spoken like a true trust-fund baby.

Most well-to-do people do not owe their success to their own abilities or drive to succeed – they owe it almost entirely to well-off family and lots of relatives/family friends who have business connections.

TL;DR - Stop using your parents' achievements as an indicator of what you have/where you're going in life.

Oh please. You can't change the situation that you're born into, that much is certainly true, but the "blah blah blah" about most people's success being due to their parents' affluence make me really tired. My Dad died when I was 7 years old. My mother and I survived on social security checks and her teaching piano lessons. I got through college and advanced education without any parental help, just my own hard work, and I know a lot of ofter people who did the same. My kids, on the other hand, had everything handed to them. They were never "hungry" and I think it was really de-motivating for them.

The people who spend their time complaining about 'success due to parents' are the people who don't have the drive to succeed.

TL;DR - ScottCarmichael doesn't have the drive to work for the assets he desires.

[–]ScottCarmichael -2 points-1 points ago

For anyone curious, the lake will not actually look like this to the naked eye, nor is this much to do with cleanliness. To achieve the effect you need a camera with a polarizing filter.

If you don't mind revisiting 1995, this page has a nice image demonstrating how such a filter alters the image.

The title implies this is where you live... So do you live near the quarry in the pic, have ever visited there, or do you just like it...?

[–]bigthink 0 points1 point ago

Karma whoring is using carefully crafted titles to extract as much upvotes as possible from the submission. Shady individuals will post random pictures with completely made-up submission titles.

Your post suggests the same with exaggerated statements like, "TIL that there are places where this is not common." That's some sheltered life you lead, that you didn't know this. And if you did know this... then you're karma whoring.

Judging by all your comments, you're really butt hurt about people who have money.

[–]ScottCarmichael -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most people who have it didn't earn it. That's my problem.

It's a major problem within our country and a big reason why the economy is so crappy. Rich people keep wealth within their small group and it's a rarity for anyone who isn't rich to become rich through hard work and talent.

[–]simsimmerman 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. I agree with you that the super wealthy are hoarding their money and causing most of our economic problems. However, this picture is of a 10 year old boat of someone who lives next to a quarry. Nothing about it screams "rich". He's most likely a middle class guy with a ski boat. Nothing out of the ordinary.

[–]ScottCarmichael -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. Everyone in America has enough disposable income to buy a boat. ಠ_ಠ If the average person bought a boat, it'd be like the one the gang buys in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

[–]simsimmerman 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A lot of average people have boats.

[–]JamminOnTheOne 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, the average middle-class person in America does have enough disposable income to buy a small boat, or season tickets to their favorite sports team, or to travel abroad every couple years, or a fancy computer/video game/home theater system. Rich people can buy all of the above, but most people can prioritize some possession or leisure activity that is important to them and find a way to buy it.

[–]ScottCarmichael -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"or to travel abroad every couple years"

OHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

"season tickets to their favorite sports team"

I checked out MLB prices - which usually have some of the lowest per ticket prices per game...and a season ticket for the cheapest, nosebleed seats is $500 for a typical team. The most expensive type is almost $10,000. The average quality seats seem to be $1,500-4,000 a season. Football season ticket prices seem to hover at ~$300 per game. Again, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

fancy computer/video game/home theater system

This can be done fairly cheaply - for $500-1000 if we're not talking about including a big, fancy HDTV and/or multiple large PC monitors as well. So, okay. You got one right.

And I get what you're trying to say, but I think your interpretation of what an average middle-class person makes and what I think they make varies a lot. In thousands of dollars per year, what is the range that you think makes up the middle class? (Per household) Can you answer that just for the sake of conversation?

Asking out of curiosity.

[–]JamminOnTheOne 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, middle class is a vague term, and of course it varies a lot regionally and by size of family. I'm in a big city in California, so I'll say anywhere from $50K-150K/yr. I know incomes and cost of living are significantly lower in most of the country, but I don't have a good handle on how much so.

My point is that most people spend a few thousand dollars every year on discretionary purchases, whether it's spread out as unnecessary dinners out, trips to bars, playing the lottery, clothing/jewelry, etc. If you have a hobby you really love, you can concentrate your spending there (especially if you plan and bargain-hunt), and restrain yourself elsewhere.

For example, of course I don't mean getting an 81-game plan sitting in infield boxes. A 20-game plan sitting in pretty nice seats (upper deck boxes or outfield lower deck) is around $500/seat. If you plan it out, you can buy an air/hotel package to Hawaii/Caribbean or even possibly some Asia/Europe destinations for $1000/person. Again, you can't stay in 5-star hotels in Singapore or London, but you can stay at a pretty nice resort in Cabo or a beachside condo in Maui at that price. It's doable, if you prioritize it.

[–]ScottCarmichael 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. There's your reasoning right there: You think $50k-150k is middle class.

If we are to assume 25% of income is taken away due to taxes, then in the middle class to you're talking about a person would be taking home $721 ($24/hr) up to $2,163 ($72/hr) a WEEK.

Of course people making that much can afford fancy things on an annual basis!

I view middle class as households earning $40-75k. At most, that's $1,081 a week and even that is more than enough to pay for the things you're talking about. Even this infographic from the New York Times verifies that the middle 20% of the wages in this country fall into roughly that range. Also, according to it, the wages you're talking about ($50-150k) put those people into the top 40% of wages of the country. Not really the "middle."

Now I realize cost of living can throw things out of whack but to be fair, most Americans don't live in the super condensed metro areas where rent is thousands of dollars and a small house/condo is $500k.

I would, say, however, that a working adult certainly has thousands of dollars at their disposal annually, even if they make below middle class wages (let's say between $25-50k). How they spend that is up to them...but it's highly unlikely a person that earns that little would be able to reasonably justify a trip to another country, season tickets or anything that cost over $1,000 for entertainment only. For example, a person making $25k only brings home $360 a week ($12/hr) after taxes. To go on an extremely cheap $2k trip abroad, it would take 5 1/2 weeks of pay. That's over 10% of their entire money for the year! And you and I know a trip is never as cheap as you think it'll be.

And don't forget there's not always just one person to consider. If you're married, you have to account for your spouse's wants/needs and then for kid(s) you gotta consider how much it'll cost to have them involved in stuff.

I've read before that if a household makes $50k (keep in mind this would need to be adjusted for high cost of living areas), their happiness won't really vary that much compared to rich people because at that point, you have enough to go on a trip every year or so, buy another car/new car, save, spend, etc. - it's just that wealthier people can do MORE of it. I think there's some truth in that.

But still, regardless of facts, figures and all that jazz which can be interpreted in many ways, thanks for the discussion. You were polite, a rarity on Reddit!

Wisconsin professes to have 15,074 lakes (see related links).

However, 9,037 of these lakes are unnamed and average only four acres in size, leaving only 6044 that are named. According to WI DNR, "Of the 15,074 documented lakes in Wisconsin, only about 40 percent have actually been named. The majority of the unnamed lakes are very small, less than 10 acres". The WI DNR also states, "About 3,620 of the state's lakes are larger than 20 acres, constituting more than 93 percent of the surface area of Wisconsin's inland lakes." http://dnr.wi.gov/lakes/about/factsandfigures.html

In contrast, Minnesota has 11,842 named lakes larger than ten acres (see related links).

When including unnamed lakes over ten acres the number for Minnesota is 15,291. http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/history/mnstatehistory/state_facts.html

In addition, when considering the surface area of each of the states five largest lakes (great lakes excluded), Wisconsin's largest cover 204,105 acres whereas Minnesota's top five total 896,387. Furthermore, the surface area of Minnesota's largest eight lakes is greater than all 15,074 lakes in Wisconsin.

Total surface area covered by lakes in each state

Wisconsin: 1,000,000 (see related links). Minnesota: 2,560,299 acres (http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/faq/mnfacts/water.html)

EDITOR'S NOTES: According to the Minnesota DNR page, Minnesota has 11,842 lakes that are over 10 acres, not 15,291 This discrepancy is due to the number of named versus unnamed lakes and only the number of named lakes is addressed on the MN DNR website. The statistic about 20,000 lakes in Minnesota greater than five acres is also not cited. In addition, the author misrepresented data as a simple calculation of the sum total of Minnesota's eight largest lakes (according to the cited DNR reference) is 697,000 acres This does not include the 307,000 acres represented by the MN portion of Lake of the Woods. The only qualifier with this statement is that Great Lakes are not included and thus the data are not misrepresented. This is not greater than the total surface area of Wisconsin's inland lakes. It is also a moot point as Minnesota has several uniquely large inland lakes. Moreover, no mention is made concerning the average area of the "unnamed Wisconsin lakes," This was addressed in the first paragraph where it is stated that the unnamed lakes in Wisconsin average 4 acres in size. merely that a majority of them are under 10 acres, leaving an unspecified number that are greater than 10 acres. A conservative estimate that 49% of the unnamed lakes are over 10 acres gives 4428 unnamed lakes over 10 acres in WI. Even if all the named lakes in WI were over ten acres (not true) the sum of 10+ acre unnamed and named lakes in WI is 10,472, or nearly 1400 less than the named lakes over 10 acres in MN. This leaves the argument at a standstill until specific data is obtained and presented.

At any rate, none of this is relevant as the question is not stated "Which state has more lakes greater than 10 acres between Minnesota and Wisconsin?" In terms of water-to-land ratio, it should be noted that the total area of Minnesota is 86,938.87 sq. mi. compared to the total area of Wisconsin at 35 million acres , or 54,687.5 sq. mi., making it 59% larger. This would be a pertinent rejoinder to address arguments made on the basis of arbitrary non-state criteria.

In regard to the final comment, the water surface area of Minnesota quoted at the bottom includes rivers and lakes (including the portion of Lake Superior and Lake of the Woods within Minnesota state boundary). The water surface area of Wisconsin quoted on its DNR page only addresses the area of inland lakes, but includes that, "The portions of Lakes Michigan and Superior that lie within Wisconsin's boundaries add nearly 6.5 million acres of water to Wisconsin."

The verdict is still out on this argument, however, as the valid point exists that Wisconsin incorporates smaller-sized lakes into the number of its inland lakes. According to the current official record by the state DNR departments, Minnesota has 11,842 lakes and Wisconsin has 15,074. But if the same metrics were used, Minnesota may have more lakes, in absolute terms, than Wisconsin (although this is yet uncertain and would prove difficult as arguments over appropriate metrics, taking into account surface area and depth, would ensue). It would seem that this whole argument is based on Minnesota's slogan "The Land of 10,000 Lakes" and the long history of rivalry between the two states. Is this slogan referring to the state's superior quantity of lakes or simply portraying that it is a land with a unique relative abundance of freshwater in the form of lakes? If the former, then Minnesota may be the victor although Alaska wins over any other state by a landslide with over three million lakes . If the latter, then Wisconsin unequivocally possesses a greater resource of these freshwater bodies over Minnesota as the state is considerably smaller and defined by water on nearly all sides. On the topic of freshwater resources it should also be mentioned that Minnesota's 1.09 million acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) contains over 1200 lakes alone and 1500 miles of canoe routes. It is the largest water based park in the US National Parks system.

Killarney Provincial Park in Canada has very similar lakes. There is a lake that is 30m (~100ft) deep and you can see all the way to the bottom because the water is so crystal clear. Its pretty eerie when you are canoeing over it and can literally see dead trees on the bottom of the lake 100 ft away. Its sad that people believe the lakes are so clear because of acid rain coming from Detroit, but it s beautiful nonetheless. Also there is a great spot for cliff diving, so I'd advise anybody to go there.

My brother in-law was born in Croatia and still has a lot of family over there.

I am currently working to save up a bunch of money so that I can go over there with him on his next vacation. The water and nature around that country is so beautiful it is unbelievable

I'm in Michigan, and I can say there is oooone lake up north that is just as clear as this, even when you're swimming in about 12ft. But the ground is sandy instead of rocky (which is A+++ for me).

Lake Avalon, man B) Michigan does have some nice lakes. Just not Huron...

Where I live the lakes are so polluted that they are pretty much black. Even the nicer lakes aren't even close to clear.

I have been living in Korea for 3 years now and all the lakes here are polluted because the water is stagnant. There is not anything I miss more than having a clean lake to wakeboard in whenever I want to.

Boats do tend to not float in air like that. Where do you live that allows you to do that?

For once can we as the collective entity of Reddit, appreciate a really cool photo instead of attacking it? So what if he used some sort of effect on the picture, just enjoy it for what it is! Maybe his parents had tons of money, does he claim to have acquired some huge amount of wealth? He just says he enjoys where he lives. simple as that.
