You change your password to a ton of shit you type and copy and paste twice, then deactivate it and copy something else. Then it is gone.

[–]shacknasty 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did exactly that, but then had to get into my deactivated account a few years ago while I was away on holiday. It took less than 12 hours to have FB reset my password, even when contacting them from another unconnected email address.

[–]BoreasNZ 1 point2 points ago

I did this with my HoN account.

I'm wondering if it's possible to get it back if I email them? :D

I love when people tell other people g+ is a wasteland.

[–]_ak 9 points10 points ago

People only think it's a wasteland because they have nobody that shares the good content with them.

Funny thing is that I have better interactions on G+, better conversations, too.

I will do all I can to stave off an eternal september there.

For me personally, I think I'm going to do what I did with myspace when I started using facebook. I'm going to just add everyone on the planet, then ignore the place, while keeping my close friends next to me, and posting more intimate thoughts on the other.

Is it wrong that my first thought about you people who've deleted FB is "Well, how many friends do you/they have?"

Not even in an artificial number of friends on Facebook way, but a "Do they ever try to organize events with more than 4 people? Do they talk to more than 15 people regularly? How often do they try and meet up with people?" kind of way.

I honestly think having FB around has helped me extend my friend circle, and improve relationships that were once just casual acquaintances.

[–]concordefallacy 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very true -- but the part that gets on my nerves is when either party thinks they're above the other for the amount of social activity (or lack thereof) they have in their lives.

Many people like Facebook, and some people don't. There's nothing wrong with either choice.

When someone writes "meh" and they get 15 likes and 25 comments.

While your post about moving country gets 4 upvotes and a comment about buying a keychain for them. Grown men shouldn't have to subject themselves to this abuse.

[–]Amy_Pond 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm certainly not the type to bitch someone out for pulling the plug, but some people do. I've also heard people bragging about how few friends they have, or for deletion, because that somehow proves how loyal they are to their "real friends". Douchebags are gonna be douchebags, on either side of the fence.

[–]tmushrush 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You never had an event with more than four people before facebook? That's sad.

[–]rotzooi 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't you know? That was impossible back then.

Group sports too, were invented by Facebook. Before, we only had table tennis and yo-yo contests.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do sometimes have events with more people but most of the time it's just with my close friends I live near, yes I do talk to people and I usually am with friends at least once a week outside of school and such, so no I'm not just some antisocial idiot sitting at home doing nothing all day. It's just I prefer not using facebook because I don't need it to contact people or whatever, if I want to contact them I have email/whatever. Facebook just feels like everyone is trying to make their life seem glamorous and flaunt the amount of people they know the names of.

[–]boundlessgravity 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not wrong; FB is a way to connect, and also a way to assert social status or the lack thereof.

It was not at all uncommon 10 years ago to just call your friends and organize up to 20 people to do something without much notice. Maybe there was an expectation that "something was going on" Friday night. We used phone trees or phone chains, I guess, and and they existed (informally) in social groups and soccer teams. Damn I am old.

The point, really, is that the types of communication you choose to engage in necessarily determine who your friends and acquaintances are. Sometimes more personal forms can provide different experiences of intimacy than online interaction.

I have a coworker who deactivated, then I made him reactivate 3 years later (because we were working on a project that used FB for login, so he had to have an account to work on it). It came back like nothing had happened. He spent that afternoon deleting all of his friends & adjusting his privacy settings to make himself as invisible as possible.

Interesting side effect: while unfriending everyone (except for me, since he had to have at least one friend to test the project we were working on), he unfriended his girlfriend. This ended their relationship status (which had come back into being when he reactivated). This resulted in a "______ is no longer in a relationship" story on her wall. This resulted in friends & family calling her and asking if she was ok and offering to listen if she needed to talk. It took her a few hours to figure out that they all thought she & he had broken up. She was also not very happy when she found out he had unfriended her but not me.

It won't work if you visit one of those websites that have a Facebook 'like' button on it. In other words, even if you visit a website that uses a Facebook API, the deletion process is canceled. You need to add facebook.com to your hosts file so that facebook is properly blocked.

That was how I felt. I deactivated it and it was deleted a few weeks later. At first, it felt a bit depressing for me because I don't really get out that much and see my friends in the first place, but with my facebook gone I get to interact with them even less. But then, after a little while with it gone, it feels a bit liberating. I no longer have to keep up any sort of online identity that is constantly being scrutinized. I was able to see who was my true friend and who wasnt (the ones who forget you exist with no facebook are not friends). I feel... free.

[–]mxaxtxtx 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am off the grid and I have always thought of it like this...we have gone hundreds and hundreds of years of meeting people, going through experiences with people, and eventually losing touch with people. There is a reason these people are in our past. It "weeds" out those who matter and those who don't. If the maximum amount of effort someone is going to put in with me is a facebook chat or a post on my wall, then they just don't matter.

[–]pintomp3 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It "weeds" out those who matter and those who don't.

I see it as more of a process of change. As my interests and priorities change, so do my friends. I guess I would rephrase it as "It weeds out those who matter now and those who don't." But with things like Facebook, those people linger even though you've moved on.

[–]I_CAPE_RUNTS 1 point2 points ago

I see it as a great way to stay in touch with people who you wouldn't have normally been able to keep up with, especially due to technological constraints. Not everyone I want to talk to has AIM or Skype, or the free time to take a 30 minute phone call every day.

That said I clean my Facebook friends list regularly. I have about 120 friends and I don't ever like it to go much above that.

[–]words_of_a_saint 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel the same way about it. I mean, if someone you are "friends" with doesn't put forth any effort to be a friend outside of facebook, then who needs them. In a way, I think reddit has satisfied that social craving for many of us that deleted our facebooks.

I would better equate this photo with deactivating yourself (is that a thing?) from the internet completely. I can quit facebook anytime I want. I just don't feel like it. ;)

been free for a few months now. it's bliss. pure bliss.

[–]jacobtaylor1987 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why delete it?

[–]ragnarockette 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because some people have shitty self control.

I could just not stalk every person I meet. I could not tell people all the interesting things I'm doing. I could not cultivate my interesting, and quirkly lit pictorial persona. But its there, so I will.

Its the same reason why I can't have ice cream in my fridge. Its just better not to buy it.

[–]jacobtaylor1987 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I think my girlfriend is the only person I know who isn't like this. She has less than 20 friends and uses Facebook purely as an organizational tool, basically.

The only downside is that old friends of her get offended when she won't add them (jeez girls can be petty).

[–]CummingOnKittens 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because you need a reason to be self-righteous about it. You can't do that if you just stop using it.

Haven't had FB in over two years. This was actually said to me after I told a girl I didn't use FB:

"You don't use FaceBook? Are you like Amish?"

[–]krakenking 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i don't get it...what's wrong with facebook?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nothing it's just a tool, but people abuse it. They do dumb shit like hit the like button for everything and have hundreds of friends even though it's impossible to be friends with that many people. If people used it correctly we wouldn't have this problem.

[–]TheLoneHoot 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it's a data mining scheme for mass marketing. Look at the all the commercials wanting you to like them on FB. In addition, look at your local "news" - if it's anything like mine it's HIGHLY driven by viewers with FB accounts. Why is that a problem? Well, local news has always been shitty virtually everywhere, but now you can see it getting stoopidur with all the FB driven "interest".

This is a microcosm of our society in general - people who "like" Honda Odyssey or "friend" the wacky morning zoo crew are nowadays voluntarily feeding themselves to the marketing hyenas. Not that long ago it used to be that marketing companies had to be "clever" to get valuable marketing list data to sell to companies so you could get junk mail, phone calls, etc. Now we give it to them with a smile and glazed eyes while we "keep in touch with our 'friends' ".

[–]gentlebot 1 point2 points ago

Deactivating isn't the same as deletion, which, from what I here, is fucking impossible. You'll never be free.

[–]OneManWar 7 points8 points ago

Post cock pics as your profile pic. Your account will disappear pretty fast from what I hear.

[–]Manfred1816 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I deleted mine. You get asked at least four times if you're sure, and on the last one, they have pictures of a few of your friends with "(their name) is going to miss you" under each one. As long as you stay off for two weeks, it's gone. Well, I think it's gone ha.

[–]mindokiller 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It just sucks when non-social media services that I won't stay away from for two weeks (like my SC2 profile) are linked to my FB account. Yeah, it's my fault for selecting to link to FB in the first place, but c'mon. It shouldn't be so difficult to permanently delete an account.

[–]mvaca 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah deleting it is rather annoying. shit, deactivation needed me to answer a million questions, and after all that they still find the time to tell you that if you wanna come back to fb you can. They know you'll be back

[–]Manfred1816 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]ryuujinusa 1 point2 points ago

for me it's surprisingly useful as I live abroad and now have friends around the world. honestly though if you live in the same area as most of the people you know, it's kind of pointless. I never used it before I moved away from home. it sat dormant for a good two years.

[–]dlescook 2 points3 points ago

That's actually funny because it's not gone, and it's not done. Facebook does not delete any account. They merely hide them. They save all of your personal information. There is no way to actually get rid of your facebook.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's so ridiculous. "Deleting" a facebook profile pretty much just de-friends everyone on your list. You could sign right back in and everything would be back to normal, with a "Welcome Back!" bar on the top.

[–]AdaroTeiji 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't deactivated mine but I don't go on it anymore. Every once in a while, I remember I have one, look at it, and go 'nope. still nothing interesting.' A lot of my friends don't really use facebook, and even the ones that do... I'm not that interested in the parts of their lives that don't intersect with mine. Hearing about it once in person is enough, I don't have to see it on the internet first.
