Still one of the most chilling pictures I've ever seen.

Yep. Speaking literally, this might end up in one of my nightmares.

Seriously!

I wonder if it would be possible to make a movie out of an idea like this and hide for more than 20 seconds the fact that it was an allegory for religious indoctrination.

I've seen this picture so many times, but I'll upvote it every single time. Being a parent, it's hard for me to express how infuriating I find it.

If you couldn't mind me guessing here, this means you live somewhere along the east coast right?

Done. 81 friends(I know it's not a lot. I don't friend random people I've never met) at the start. Then again, I regularly post atheist stuff, so I doubt I'll lose any more than the VERY born-again aunt I have who says that I'm an atheist just because I want to sin(She unfriended me after I told her it was cruel to indoctrinate kids).

Has anyone seen the source of this?

I believe it's from a cartoon concerning indoctrination.

I would like to know as well. For one thing, I'd be curious what other words have been made by the artist.

Can someone please alter this picture for me? Instead of the Cross, can someone draw a Khanda (Sikh symbol)? I'm from a Sikh family, but I'm a full-blown atheist and don't hide it :)

Yay for childhood indoctrination! Why don't people get that the only reason they believe such ridiculous things is because their parents taught them to believe in ridiculous things since they were born? Children believe in Santa Clause, the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy, and several other ridiculous things, I wonder how many would still accept such things as an adult if they were never told they're fake, and most people believed in them.

Why a bible? Why not a copy of the bill of rights? Why not the Rights of Man? Why not any other idea we raise our kids with.

There is no way to not indoctrinate your child into any belief, because anything you teach them is as such, indoctrination.

Sure slapping bibles on someones head feeds your point, but its a untrue statement to perpetuate a end which is easily wrong.

Does Christianity indoctrinate? Yes.

Does every other belief, political, moral, religious indoctrinate? Yes.

I'll be downvoted by the hivemind, but I'm just tired of these images that demonize while ignoring everything else that does the same.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

You do realize that indoctrinate implies (at least in my opinion) that you force children to believe something and to never question it. We don't tell our kids to not question the bill of rights, or anything else we teach them.

[–]Purple_Shade 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some people do seem to encourage a lack of questioning in all aspects of life. But in my (all be it limited) experience, those that do, usually do so out of a heavily religious bent; and encouraging their children not to question anything they teach, seems to be like a double protection measure for their religious beliefs.

I'm monogamous because I've been socialized to be so. I have rationally worked out that it's a ridiculous state of affairs, but sharing a mate would be uncomfortable the same way it would be to take a shit in front of an audience. These are social ideas that have affected my emotional reactions to situations, and I can't just rationalize them away.

The kind of mind-fuck that is a religious education at a young age is so much worse to such a large degree that your comparison does not approach fair.

[–]G59 2 points3 points ago

Does Christianity indoctrinate? Yes. Does every other belief, political, moral, religious indoctrinate? Yes.

Well of course! We're all raised with certain ideas others try to enforce upon us, may it be parents, teachers, society, TV commercials, etc. It's not that I'm ignoring all else that's potentially brainwashing and am purely focused on bashing the Bible all my life. The focus is on religion simply because you're on an atheism subreddit.

[–]Purple_Shade 0 points1 point ago*

First, it's art. The artist obviously had a bone to pick.

Second, as G59 pointed out, you are in a sub-reddit about atheism.

Third, religious doctrines, at least in the western world, tend to also carry with them other tacked-on ideologies, especially political ones (and when I say that, I mean compare the "right" and "left" in even my country [Canada] and note that our right wing seems leftist, and likewise your left wing seems extremely far right. And we are right next door - I do not think it's a coincidence that our most religious province, is less religious, than the least religious state.)

Also consider that christianity in particular, because of the large amount of money held by the religious right, has a very large influence on all other ideologies simply by the factor of wealth. (and often wealth=influence) All religions have this potential - and yes, most ideologies, but what ideologies are really prepared to compete with the big religions, especially christianity, for space in children's minds?

I'd bet those other ideologies would rather share the memeplex; especially because, one meme can spread the other, making both more virulent. And I assure you, christianity, is a virulent meme.

Religion is scary, but it's not this scary.

EDIT: Jesus Christ, I was being sarcastic. The image was spooky in a monsters under the bed sort of way. That was all.

It can be, just depends on where you live and the people you talk to.
