WTF is THIS?... outside of the obvious

[–]blindsighter 29 points30 points ago

it's "HMS Ophelia". Kind of a logo for the steampunk band Abney Park.

You're good, that's exactly what it is ...

violin solo

With a crew of drunken pilots

Were the only airship pirates

Were full of hot air and were starting to rise

Were the terror of the skies, but a danger to ourselves

Probably a photoshop. Compare the pic with this one

Nice one. You can see a lot more of what's going on in this higher resolution image. I'm kind of wishing the frame of the photo was a little wider to the right so you could see Alcatraz, though.

Well they are only moving like 5-10mph. If we all drove like we were in parking lots and the driver had open air view of everyone around them then we probably would be more lax.

Problem is we have closed in metal boxes which have some poor blind spots cruising at 75mph.

[–]gallico 4 points5 points ago

Actually this photo has been taken only a couple of weeks after the big earthquake of 1906 and people had more serious problems than traffic laws :)

Market still has a trolley and people still drive like that on Market Street. Aside from the random U turns and the horses, you could take this video today.

Timetravellers need to have inconspicuous means of taking video, and I'm afraid a large videocamera (aside from perhaps those flip cameras) would startle the townspeople.

[–]ex_ample 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually that film was shot just before the quake, while the photo was taken after. So while the film shows 'daily life' the photo shows massive destruction caused by a the fire/earthquake.

here is a video showing the destruction and aftermath.

While watching the video, I was imagining this for commentary:

"Hey asshole, thanks for cutting me off"

"Hey gramps, think its time to upgrade that horse to a car to go a little faster?"

"Get out of the road people or I'll run you over".

"It's survival of the fittest out here"

I should point out that this was after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and was taken from a kite.

"Panorama of San Francisco in ruins, taken via kite photography approx. 2,000 ft (600 m) above San Francisco Bay overlooking water front. Sun over Golden Gate. May 28, 1906 by George R. Lawrence"

[–]Obi_Kwiet 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. I didn't think you could keep a kite stable enough for a photo that good back in 1906

[–]cycophuk 3 points4 points ago

[–]ajpos 10 points11 points ago

That link is blocked at my work for "Filter Avoidance". I'll check it out when I get home. Thanks.

[–]birdbrainlabs 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

George Lawrence spent a lot of time trying to commercialize his aerial photography, and called the train of kites "Captive Airship" to differentiate them from the "toys" that were otherwise being flown.

Notably, he was flying an 80# (IIRC) camera from a train of several kites, so it was a rather serious operation.

[–]cycophuk -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cool. Thanks for the answer.

[–]overduebook 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

1) This photo was taken by George Lawrence. Here is his Wiki - he was a cool guy who built neat things.

2) If you look on the Embarcadero you can see the clock tower of the Ferry Building which was originally built in 1898. The big wide street stretching out in front of it is Market Street. If you continue up Market Street, to the right hand side you'll be approaching Union Square. The St. Francis hotel, completed two years earlier, was one of the largest buildings to survive the earthquake generally intact. For reference, here is what the hotel looked like in 1904.

3) See that big smoky dome further down Market on the right hand side? That's the top of City Hall. It went from this to this and eventually made its way back to this.

4) The other tall building on the left hand of Market Street, close to City Hall was The Call Building which was pretty much destroyed in the fire and looks completely unrecognizable today.

5) A little behind the Call Building is the U.S. Mint, which I can't really make out in the photograph. There's an excellent longish article from Smithsonian magazine about the Mint, its salvation from the fire, and its important role in the rebuilding of the city which can be found here.

6) Remember that just because a building is standing doesn't mean it survived the earthquake. If you look closely, most of the standing buildings have been scorched in the fires and had to be demolished afterwards.

If you want a really cool "before and after" comparison, History Pin has a neat slideshow.

I printed this out about 4 years ago ~ 2.5' x 5.5' mounted on .5" black foam core, and hung it above my fireplace everyone asks about it. I love this picture something about seeing the bay with no bridges just makes this picture what it is.

[–]MotherFuckingCupcake 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe this is before all the landfill to the shore along the bay happened, too, so it's where it started naturally.

[–]overduebook 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Definitely not. You can see the Ferry Building at the bottom of the picture sitting in its current location. However, the rubble from the destroyed buildings was used further north on the coastline to create what is currently the Marina district. Most the Embarcadero area had been filled in starting in the 1870s, after they built a seawall and started filling it in. Most of the filling in had actually finished just a year or so before the earthquake. The Embarcadero area seawall was finished in 1905.
