        Sure, its rendered. but it might take a LONG time to render in HD. Also, (at least this is the way i work), images tend to be composited in PS or after effects after the layers are rendered.

          You make an excellent point. Fan expectation, I think, can be set during initial announcements. If you let them know that what's coming is going to be different, they won't be disappointed. But I agree, this is a tight rope to walk.

          Studio executives are scared to take risks. This means the writing must be "mainstream enough" before script approval. Also, if the director's vision is too avant-garde, he will face a lot of pressure from the studio. The producor's vision is also usually based on commercial success, so they too fight the director sometimes if he/she tries to rock the boat.
