The most popular iteration of this repost determined that the answer would in fact be C, and that yes, having obsessive-compulsive traits is perfectly normal.

I do care, quite a bit, probably because I have a disorder. People suggesting that disorders aren't real or that they are based on normal personality traits aggravtes me to no end.

When people say, "There is no normal" or "I don't try to be normal anymore" anytime the topic of mental disorders and illness comes up I just want to hand out a big "fuck you." I see it all the time, and when I came out to family members, and it triggers the fuck out of me.

Is there any personality trait that hasn't been twisted into a disorder or syndrome? Yes! Fucking all of them!

This is really the only way. It's completely understandable that girls who are not in med school don't want to date someone who is in med school. I've lost more than one girlfriend who says that I spend too much time studying and not enough time with her. It's not like they didn't know what they were getting themselves into.

Surgeons are the biggest assholes too. If two surgeons marry each other it's a guaranteed divorce in 5 years or less.

[–]gocougs11 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Orthopedics are often worse than general surgeons. One of my close friends is an ortho resident, and he's awesome. But whenever we go out with the people he works with, they're fucking dickheads. I don't know many radiologists, but I hear they're pretty dickheadish also. Basically any specialty that needs a 220+ on step 1 boards are the worst, because although they may or may not be the smartest, they are almost always the ones who are in it for the money.

[–]sanarothe 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

what is a step 1 board and is 220+ good? what does new high score mean? is that good?

[–]utohs 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doctors (MDs) need to take a series of 3 written board exams to become licensed physicians. This is called the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE). They generally take step one after the first two years of medical school. This score is one of the most important factors into getting into a residency of their choice.

The mean for step one is about 220, so if you get 220+ you are "smarter" than half of the people in medical school

[–]gocougs11 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

http://www.usmle.org/

Step 1 of the Medical Licensing Examination (usually just called Boards) is the biggest test anyone hoping to become a doctor will ever take in their life. Scores from Step 1 follow you around for your entire life, much moreso than scores from step 2 or 3.

Basically, if you do shitty on step 1, you're doomed to practice family medicine. If you do great, you have a better chance to go into neurosurgery, anesthesiology, radiology, ortho, etc.

In college, pre-med students trip out about the MCAT. USMLE exams make the MCAT look like a 3rd grade spelling test.

The coolest doctor I know is my best friend's uncle, who is the head radiologist at a top hospital in MN. He makes more in a week than I did my entire senior year working part time, but he's the nicest man I've ever met. And he gives me his old computers (he buys $3k desktops every few years).

I can't speak for the field as a whole though, just one anecdote.

Also, one of my favorite moments in television history is when on one of those bachelor shows (I just happened to catch one), the bachelor (who was a doctor) at the first chance of eliminating any of the women, eliminated the doctor of the group. She completely freaked out b/c she thought that was her "in" and they were supposed to end up together. His choice was justified after seeing her reaction and I'm positive he knew precisely what type of person he was getting rid of.

Is there any personality trait left that allows a man to deviate in the slightest from what a particular society views as "normal" that has not been morphed into a sickness or syndrome?

[–]HelenAngel 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes! FWIW, I'm a senior psych major and there is a huge change in paradigm for disorders. I took Abnormal Psychology last semester and it emphasized several times that people have quirks, but it is only a disorder if it actively interferes in the person's day-to-day life and/or happiness (which would be why a person would seek a therapist). Weird is good! =)

[–]YesMaybeNope 1 point2 points ago

These labels are most dangerous to children with abusive parents (who're trying to get them diagnosed.) Almost anything a lying parent says = a new disorder.

Why would they do that? To censor & further abuse the child. If the child reports the abuse, the abuser says "oh he/she's been diagnosed with many mental disorders." If the child calls the police- same thing.

You can get diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive (high attention to something) while being diagnosed for having "low attention." (Like ADHD + "obsessive compulsive disorder.") That's impossible. These pill-selling profiteers are completely insane.

[–]Thernn 10 points11 points ago*

Wrong. I'm a diagnosed HFA. Additionally I've been diagnosed with ADD, General Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder and with OCD tendencies.

OCD and ADHD can affect completely different areas. Granted my brain doesn't work like most people's.

I come from a very stable family. My parents have been married 24 years. I have never been abused.

[–]mrgreyshadow 3 points4 points ago

AD/HD is having the inability to direct focus on a stimulus as everything is equally stimulating.

OCD traits are a possible means to cope for AD/HD -- you can't "turn off" undesired stimuli because everything stimulates you the same amount, so you can obsess over everything needing to be in a particular order. The deviating objects cause anxiety, which, in itself, causes/is caused by a neural stress responses.

These stress responses are mimicked artificially by stimulants (the gold standard AD/HD drugs) making it easier to direct focus.

Having AD/HD with OCD is really common, incidentally. How do you obsess over everything about a certain set of stimuli if you can't notice everything about certain stimuli?

Anyway, this picture isn't about a disorder. That's why the correct answer to this question is C, obsessive compulsive traits, not a disorder. A disorder represents something that interferes with normal function.

Mental disorder pretty much means "not normal and considered bad". I don't see anything wrong with that by itself, people just need to realise that just because something has a label doesn't mean it's some serious thing that needs fixing. Not that I want to discredit people suffering from disorders that seriously fuck with them.

[–]Molestinyocookies 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, AFAIK, it means "not normal and bad for you" as in, if it interferes with your day-to-day life and/or happiness, it's a disorder.

Now, with children, this is very difficult to say, since most of the information comes from the parents. An energetic child may be perfectly capable of living his life happily, but because his parents can't handle him, he has ADHD and gets meds.

However, adults that are diagnosed with this kind of stuff mostly do have an actual problem. If someone seeks out a psychologist by themselves, that's already a huge sign that it's really interfering with their life.

I believe the answer is supposed to be OCPD. And while the question is technically correct, it fails to highlight the real problem with OCPD. It's being so scheduled, orderly, and meticulous that it effects your daily life in a negative manner. I'm an OCPD sufferer myself, and I find it incredibly difficult to trust other people with things that concern my own well being because I don't believe they'll "do it right". Likewise, my social interactions are sometimes very limited if they're not scheduled or "part of the plan". This, in turn, can lead to a number of other issues as well. Most notably, severe anxiety and panic attacks (both of which I also suffer from).

I know on the surface, OCPD seems like it applies to damn near anyone who's focused, committed, and orderly. But the problem only surfaces when you're anal retentive to the Nth degree and your life starts to suffer as a result.

EDIT: I didn't see "obsessive compulsive traits" as an option. Whoops. Clearly the correct answer and also why it fails to highlight the more severe problems with OCD and OCPD. My reading skills have failed me.

[–]Lucky_Mongoose 2 points3 points ago

Hey, welcome to how everyone with an above average IQ and history of dealing with people. You can't fucking trust anyone to do important shit, at least not until you have years of experience with them and even then they are likely to fuck it up. My social interactions are also limited but again because people suck.

What you call a disorder is what millions of motherfuckers call normal. Paint yourself into a corner if you want but it's not for me and I wouldn't be who I am today if I took medicine to "help".

[–]soul-taker 42 points43 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are clearly missing the point.

You might not trust someone to pick up your check from work. And your reasoning would be because you don't trust them with something that is so important. For me? I don't trust someone to pick up a loaf of bread from the grocery store. Not because I feel they're incapable of getting bread, but because something about the bread will not be how I want it to be. Maybe I don't like the color of the package. Maybe it's asymmetrical. It could be any number of things that sets me off.

And to a person without OCPD, they like to say, "Wow, that's fucking stupid dude. Why are you overreacting? Who the fuck cares?" And guess what? I agree! It IS stupid. But I can't control what triggers my OCPD. It's something in my brain. It tells me, "That is wrong. That is not supposed to be that way." which, in turn, triggers my anxiety because something "is not right".

I can tell myself all day long, "Dude, this is no big deal. Control yourself. Get the fuck over it." and that is not going to stop me from losing my shit because I can't control how I react to it. That is why it's a disorder. Do you react like that? No, probably not. And that's why you are not diagnosed with OCPD. That is why you're "just like everyone else who has to deal with these problems". It's not just as simple as controlling yourself. Most people with OCD and OCPD are aware they act irrationally. We do not exhibit these behavioral traits by choice. But thanks for being a dick about it and trivializing my very real disorder.

[–]GodHatesYouAll 11 points12 points ago

Thank you for describing this. I was unsure as to whether it could actually be a disorder as it doesn't feel like OCD. I will go see if my doctor knows about this, as I have currently driving myself halfway to insanity because I won't even trust someone else to make me a piece of bread with cheese. (They don't cut the cheese right, they don't put it on the bread correctly, they accidentally bend the bread, they might even put too much butter on or just spread it uneven.) Clearly it is not normal to obsess over something that insignificant.

Everyone forgets that the DSM definitions for all of these things are generally qualified with something like "to the extent that it seriously negatively impacts their life". All of these things are fine so long as they aren't that disruptive for your life. You can think of the manual as a catalog of reasons people have problems they can't control that are negatively impacting their lives, rather than a "if you act like this, you must be messed up" guide.

[–]Xylox 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The DSM (basically, the psych hand book) defines anything that negatively affects your daily life as a disorder. The problem here isn't that he enjoys studying, its that he has a compulsion to study even when there is nothing to be studied. He ignores his social life, friend and possibly family which has a negative impact on his life.

You recognize, of course, that there is the option "Obsessive Compulsive Traits", suggesting that the person in question simply possesses some traits characteristic of OCD, not that the person in question actually HAS OCD. I would say that by and large, someone as meticulous as the subject of this question is not your average person. Doesn't make him abnormal, but in general I would believe that most people are at least slightly more laid back--thus he possesses some traits of OCD, but should certainly not be worried nor change his lifestyle (unless of course he goes insane from being so organized and meticulous, which I think I would).

I love how all the SAPs of Reddit think that going out is the synonim of being a douche, grabbing a drink or two on the weekend makes you an asshole and so long.

Of course, it's better to be a basement dweller than to live your life.

[–]JonnyGalt 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

drinking does not make you a douche, however, pass judgement on people because they drink is pretty douchy.

I don't see why going out, socializing, making new friends, having drinks and having fun makes you a douche. The only theory I have is because certain people feel social awkward at those settings, they translate their misery into hatred for those who can enjoy it.

[–]Qwuffl 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly!

I'd love to party, but i can't say a coherent sentense around other people because i'm socially awkward as fuck, must be because all the people who party are douches.

[–]Tacitus_ 5 points6 points ago

If you study, that's one thing. The thing this book implies is that this student rejects society apart from a very small circle. This isn't obvious just like things in the future doctor practise will be.

[–]JonnyGalt 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

and thus you present a false dilemma. You are saying you have to pick on 1 side, doing well in med school and having a gf, and on the other side, hanging out with frat guys, binge drink and smoke pot.

However, those 2 categories are not mutually exclusive. You can be in a "frat", binge drink, smoke pot, have a girl friend and do well in med school all at the same time.

I don't see why you can't be social, go out and get fucked up with your friends and still do well in school/med school. I don't see how smoking pot excludes you from having a girl friend. I especially don't see how being in a fraternity exclude you from having a girl friend, becoming a doctor or doing well in school.

You also go out of your way to insinuate that being in a fraternity, drinking and smoking pot are all bad things and will keep you from succeeding in life. You are passing judgement on those who you do not know and judging them purely on the bases of a few of their actions.

Have fun with your basement dwelling life. Yes intelligence is very important to success, however, social skills are too.

[–]improbablywrong 1 point2 points ago*

That doesn't even make sense. A 23 year old medical student isn't even an undergrad. It says "medical student", not pre-med. Medical students go to medical school with other medical students, not with liberal arts (e.g.) undergrads. Most people in fraternities/sororities are 18-22.

Sigh, I loathe reddit sometimes.

Are people only supposed to work their asses off all day and spend zero time cutting loose, socializing, or doing something for pleasure? Are the forever-aloners and SAPs of reddit as bitter as they sound? I drink, I smoke weed, and I work hard when I need to, and so far, I couldn't be happier with my life, and have heard little or no complaints from anyone around me. Take it easy for a little and stop thinking that just because other people are more comfortable than you are socially, you should label them as douche bags.

It may kill you. Let me tell you my story:

I was just home from college on my Christmas break and carousing again with my old friends from my hometown. Inevitably, someone decides to smoke me up, then decides that I can't be bothered with, and drops me off at home. Fortunately for me, no one else was home. Further fortunately for me, the house was full of all sorts of x-mas related baked goods and various assorted other groceries. So, commence eating and eating and eating. At one point, I took a bite of a cookie and was startled by a sudden noise. "What was that?" I thought, the whole bite of cookie still in my mouth. I turned around to find that it was the bagel I had put in the toaster. This was hilarious to me. I began laughing and laughing, still with the whole bite of cookie in my mouth. I began to realize that, in my laughing fit, I was unable to chew. I might asphyxiate by cookie. My family would come home to find me in a pile of cookie crumbs, having ate myself to death. This was further hilarious.

Anyway, eventually I calmed down and managed to chew my cookie. It wasn't until years later, relating the time I was nearly done in by a cookie that it occurred to me I might have simply spit out the cookie.

tl;dr: was nearly done in by a cookie while stoned.

[–]OptiMystic 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just because you could not think to spit out the cookie is no reason to blame being stoned. It's just like saying "oh yea I was drunk and came home and made something in the oven, I fell asleep because I was drunk and almost burned my house down. Being drunk almost killed me." No it was your own mistake, not a substances.

It depresses me that "prefers to attend every lecture" is considered grounds for a personality disorder... If you don't attend every lecture/class session while you're at Uni you're an idiot.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In medical school skipping class is a fairly regular occurrence for many students. There is just so much information that it is almost counterproductive to spend 6-8 hours in class when you could use that time studying. I'm a first year and I'd say that around 25-30% of the class skips every lecture. That number increases to 60-70% when we get really close to exam time. Once second year hits I hear it gets even worse.

[–]willymo 1 point2 points ago

I'm an idiot then. I don't know where you're located, but at least in the US you have to take a ridiculous amount of hours in classes that have nothing to do with your major even remotely, or that you have even the slightest interest in at all. Considering I skipped a few classes, yet still managed to get 98's and 100's on the exams means I probably didn't miss much that I couldn't get from just doing the readings at home. Half these classes are straight out of the book anyway because no professor wants to actually teach these 100-level classes. A waste of my time so they could get more money if you ask me. I chose to use that time studying for something that would actually benefit me. I don't think this qualifies as idiocy. Edit: Speaking generally about undergrad, but so far this applies somewhat to Graduate-level as well. Although, I would never skip a Grad level class to be honest. Very much material is covered very quickly.
