So, yeah. That's me and my mosaic. Let me answer the ?s. The project cost about $8,000 with lots of that coming from donations. YouCanDoTheCube.com helped my by letting me rent the cubes. The back of the mosaic, strangely and unintentionally is the virgin Mary. That's a lie. The King Estate let me use the imagery for free. The computer was used to map out the image. I used my own algorithms for solving the faces. I averaged 20 seconds per cube. It took 40 hours to build, by myself. MLK and the work he did was simple (like the 5 colors used in the mosaic, I didn't use green) yet complicated and difficult (like the rubik's cube itself.)

I did a 16"x16" Lego mosaic from a photo and I spent close to $100 in 1x1 bricks, I feel your pain, great work.

Me too but it doesn't exist anymore. :(

Really?! There was no way to save it?! At least sell it to refund the lenders and donors. That was too awesome to just tear down!

[–]j-mar 1 point2 points ago

Where are you getting cubes that are allowing you 20 second solves out of the box???

[–]MrFecteau 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not a full solve. Only a single side. They were official Rubik's Cubes. After this project was finished I had a "Rubik's Cube Muscle" between the knuckles of my index and middle fingers from the stubborn cubes.

[–]j-mar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, I guess they aren't full solves, plus there seemed to be a lot of plain white ones. Now that I think about it, solving one side in less than 20 seconds isn't that big of a deal. I have a weird hobby of picturing a different final solve pattern, and then scrambling the cube and trying to get the pattern in my head on the cube. Such as solving from a scrambled state to a checkerboard state or something.

I'm weird ...

It's actually a bunch easier to break the cubes apart and then re-assemble them in the solved order.

I just want you to know...Mr Fectaeu was the name of my elementary schools janitor. He was the most awesome janitor I ever knew, and had the best 'stache on the planet.

I now associate you with him.

His first name was 'Mr'.

Saw it at ArtPrize 2010, I really like it.

Did you end up having to solve all the cubes and send them back to Rubik or did you end up selling your piece?

Are you entering anything in ArtPrize this year?

[–]MrFecteau 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for coming to see it. I didn't have to solve them all. The cubes are being loaned to schools throughout the country so kids can use my new guide book and template to make their own mosaic. I didn't sell it and I'm not in ArtPrize this year or probably ever again. The voting issues really left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think it's managed properly.

[–]claimed4all 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Voting issues? Care to elaborate?

The only voting issues I have heard is that some of the artists are upset that the general public votes because the general public does not know what art is. Find that kind of odd myself.

[–]MrFecteau 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The first week of voting if the most important time as it establishes the leaders and then the public goes to see those pieces. ArtPrize didn't secure the contract for the cell phone companies and only one provider, T-Mobile i believe, was able to log votes. Anyone on another phone provider didn't actually vote via phone during the first week. Seeing as how the majority of people were voting via text, that's a huge fail. Also they convinced the media to play it down. The voting was not fair.

Also, smaller venues were told to stay open for shorted hours than the exhibition centers were. This resulted in more access to to exhibition center pieces and public confusion about viewing hours.

[–]claimed4all 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Makes plenty of sense. Thanks for the insight.

I do believe the voting was via AT&T.

I also thought it was going to be opened up to all carriers this year, but venue selection still plays a huge part in the top 10, as not a single one of them was at a "small" venue.

I have been wanting to do a cube mosaic for some time but could never figgure out how to buy them in bulk at a reasonable price. How does one purchase them in bulk?

[–]MrFecteau 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You don't. I was allowed to rent them. You can find knock-offs online and haggle the price down though. They are shit cubes.

[–]TheresAnApeForThat 0 points1 point ago

Nice work, Mr Fecteau.

I recently interviewed the French street artist 'Invader' and all his more recent work (from around 2006 onwards) consists of portraits made out of Rubik's Cubes - though none were on the same scale as yours.

I was just wondering if you were aware of it, and if he was an inspiration to you at all.

Like I said, I admire your patience and like the look of the final result - keep up the good work!

[–]MrFecteau 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Initially I wasn't aware of his work but I may have seen it on the interwebs and forgot I saw it. When I was doing my research for the mosaic I came across him and have been a big admirer. I would love to meet him one day.

[–]nodnodwinkwink 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think a lot of people here would appreciate if you could show us what the back of the mosaic looks like.

[–]MrFecteau 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There was never a way to photograph the back of it. It weighed 2,000 pounds and was the size of a billboard. I can assure you that there was nothing interesting on the back though. Except for the Virgin Mary.

It's awesome that you didn't use the more common method for arranging a Rubik's Cube, aka "drip soapy water on the stickers until they come off, then stick them back on in the correct position."

Don't judge me, I was a "work smarter, not harder" kind of kid.

[–]Phillip_Fry 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it would be smarter to solve the Rubik's cube.

No offense.

[–]MrFecteau 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it's much faster too. You can learn how to do this. I made a guide book and some templates for school kids to use. http://www.youcandothecube.com/cube-mosaics/

[–]brok3n 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was a LOT of money. He did manage to get some sponsorships and do a few fundraisers to offset the out of pocket cost though.

[–]soulofaqua 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're official Rubik's Cubes so:

$11.99 (source) x 4,242 (source) = $50,861.58 at max

Chances are that he got some bulk discount though.

EDIT: for all you non-Europeans.

[–]Zeppelanoid 17 points18 points ago

WTF kind of comma is that?

Is it $50,861.58?

Or $50 861,58?

Or $5,086,158?

[–]Rehehelly 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

$50,861.58.

11.99 * 4242 in google.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can site math as your source, no need to reference google.

[–]Rehehelly 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That wasn't a source. If you type that in Google, it will do the maths for you (herp derp calculator). Basically that was me telling the guy if he took a few seconds of his time, he could have easily seen it was a typo and that it was meant to be a decimal.

[–]Richie311 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's EU, they put commas where decimals go and vice-versa.

[–]Zeppelanoid 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But he didn't do that for the calculations ($11.99).

[–]Rehehelly 4 points5 points ago

Just an FYI to people, the UK doesn't. We still do numbers like this 10,000.7

[–]redoptic 1 point2 points ago

I'm going with $5,086,158.

[–]soulofaqua 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm Dutch, we use a comma. My sincerest apology that I made one little mistake as I tried to help someone find the answer to his question.

Is it really that unclear?

[–]Zeppelanoid 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not so much the comma (french canadians use it too - I live in MTL) it's the fact that you didn't use the comma in your original price ($11.99) that had me confused. No harm done though!

[–]Uriniass 0 points1 point ago

[–]patejam 0 points1 point ago

[–]original_prankster 2 points3 points ago

I'm glad to hear that, and great job at that. This is what got me kinda annoyed, among the other internal squabbles over the image someone who dreamed beyond petty squabbles about money.

[–]RapeShrike 3 points4 points ago

Am I the only one who doesn't get the 'why'? What do the cubes represent? Was MLK some sort of a puzzle wrapped in an enigma?

[–]killedyourcat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, you aren't the only one. There are two of us now. I'm really not understanding why this couldn't be done via some other medium, but I guess some people stare at a block of marble and see a statue in it and others see a Rubik's cube and see a mural of MLK.

[–]markisthis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Three. The artist addressed why he chose the medium, but his inspiration seems fairly basic, and frankly, sterile. I'm not against his commemorative desire, but his approach seems incredibly detached from the figure he wishes to represent.

[–]autobulb 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. To me it seems less of an art piece and more of a mildly impressive feat of tedious labor. Get the computer to do the conversion and then just match the blocks. Is it hard and tedious, yea, but given enough time and effort you could recreate nearly any image.

What the hell? How do you even begin to construct something like that? Mad props to Peter Fecteau.

[–]DoWhile 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

  1. Come up with the idea (this is probably the hardest step)

  2. Find or draw picture of MLK

  3. Use tiled printing or photomosaic techniques to generate the final image. Someone wrote some code and made a youtube video about how to generate a Rubik's cube mosaic.

  4. Buy cubes (I take it back... this is the hardest step)

  5. Solve 1 side of each cube to match the colors (as pointed out in an earlier comment, solving 1 side takes under a minute after a bit of practice)

  6. Do previous 4241 more times by yourself or get some friends to help out. Overall time: about 70 hours if you assume it takes 1 minute to solve a side (this is very likely an overestimate)

He probably just has a zoomed version of the image in his laptop. Once you know the technique and have a little practise, getting the right colours on just one side takes literally less than a minute. Following some written instructions on every cube would just slow down the process significantly.

Seeing that he has his computer open, and staring intently while setting up the cube, he's probably using a Rubik's cube solver to get the right colors on one side. Still a creative idea and would take a hell of a long time. Impressive!

More likely the computer has a copy of the image divided into squares so he can get the colors right.

Not needed, only doing 1 square of a rubik's cube is surprisingly easy, you can figure it out in less than 10 minutes if you set your mind to it.

[–]ultimatt42 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And you can do it in under 2 minutes if you use your hands.

yup, its quite easy, now if it was a 3d statue then I might be impressed

[–]biggmclargehuge 0 points1 point ago

getting one square in the right spot is not nearly as easy as getting an entire face in the correct combination

[–]dafunkmasta 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually you can just pop out the pieces, rearrange them, and pop them back in...much easier!

[–]GodBane 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not likely, solving just one face of a cube takes only a few quick moves. Popping out the pieces can be a real pain in the ass.

Public figure? Public domain.

Assuming he duplicated an extant photograph, then there may be a copyright issue there.

[–]brok3n 0 points1 point ago

He actually got sponsored by Rubik's cube for part of the cost. There still was a lot of out of pocket cost for him, but fundraisers helped that out too.

[–]MrFecteau 0 points1 point ago

It wouldn't. It only takes me about 20 seconds per cube. Peeling of the stickers or breaking the cube apart would take miunutes.

I manually manipulate them into the correct arrangement. It would take too long any other way.

I would have built one of those lego machines that can "solve" it into an arbitrary configuration.

Actually, if you found a video of that thing and posted it to reddit it right now, you could probably make it to the front page....

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That dude is me. :)

[–]apullin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why didn't you build a machine? Didn't it take a long time to solve all those cubes to the right configuration? I guess you could have just had a script output the sequence of moves for you to do, if they all start from a defautl configuration.

[–]MrFecteau 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It took 40 hours by hand. It would have taken longer to build the machine and then babysit that machine while it cranked it out. Plus, can you imagine the algorithm it would take to make that machine work? I like using my hands.
