Mark his realism

Jez: She's the one person for me, in the whole world.

Mark: Isn't it convenient that out of the approximately three billion adult women in the world, your one true love happens to live in the same block of flats as you instead of in a village in Mozambique?

I don't think of myself as a poor deprived ghetto girl who made good. I think of myself as somebody who from an early age knew I was responsible for myself, and I had to make good.

Jez after spiking Mark with too much cough syrup so he'd fall asleep and not ruin his party.

Jez: Aw, look at him lying there, so peaceful not knowing what's going on. I could rape him. Should I rape him?....I won't rape him.

They make me feel bad and laugh, which is the best sensation ever.

[–]ResidentGinger 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've found the uncomfortableness is what makes you relate to the characters and gives a show more realism.

I hate uncomfortable scenes when they're uncomfortable just to be uncomfortable, but that doesn't seem to be the case that often on Peep Show. Ahem. Uncomfortable.

[–]mistergookey 18 points19 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Peep Show is one of the best shows with awkward comedy, although we mustn't forget how good Ricky Gervais is at it too. Extras and The Office were both spectacularly awkward.

[–]underattack86 11 points12 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How about that moment in Extras where Maggie brings a young black man back to her apartment and gets caught trying to hide her golliwog? Holy fuuuuuuuuuck that's awkward.

Don't you guys pay for piracy via a tax on blank media? Find it on a torrent tracker. You've paid for the act already...

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

O_o?! Go on...

[–]asdf7890 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I could be misremembering, but didn't a group of media companies successfully get a "tax" added to blank media to recompense them for piracy? They certainly tried in Canada, it is certainly worked somewhere.

If my memory is correct and the Cananananananadians pay such a fee on blank media then they've officially recompensed the companies for the piracy so should not be punished in other ways if found to be taking [part in the piracy they've already paid for.

Of course it would never really work that way. I was of course being somewhat facetious. Even if you could win a case with such an argument you'd probably bankrupt yourself in the process.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

That is not the same show. It's the same two comedians, but they're far less funny in Mitchell and Webb Look than they are in Peep Show.

[–]filthwizard 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mitchell and Webb don't actually write Peep Show, another team of people do it. They do write That Mitchell and Webb look, but like you say it's no where near as good.

I assumed that they wrote Peep Show for years before I found out.

[–]callmelucky 17 points18 points ago

That Mitchell and Webb Look is actually excellent as sketch comedies go, I recommend it, but I agree that Peep Show is much funnier.

[–]messner 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't understand why you have been downvoted. Mitchell and Webb did not write Peep Show, and in my view (and the view of most other people I speak to) it is the funnier of the two shows. I think they know that too.

[–]filthwizard 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think people just want Mitchell and Webb to have written Peep Show, it's like they're in denial or something! That Mitchell and Webb Look has it's moments but Peep Show has been consistently brilliant for seven series now.

You gotta love British humor

[–]HarryBlessKnapp 18 points19 points ago*

I'm British. I don't really understand this. I'll admit that British TV is pretty much on fire, but there's a lot of good comedy coming out of America that gets lapped up over here:

  • Curb

  • The American Office (I know it's British but I feel it's taken on a life of its own and Carrell's performance is insanely good)

  • Arrested Development (Don't like it personally)

  • Family Guy (I know you guys slate it but it's still popular in the UK)

However, you do pump out a lot of shit comedy. I think that is the difference. We do make less shit comedy, and if it's shit it never makes it to your shores anyway. I think this is where the whole, "But do you american understand the British humour?" question arises from. Because we certainly don't understand some of the shit that you guys export to us.

edit: Canned laughter. I feel like it's overused in american comedy. It actually hurts my ears.

important edit: Speaking to the Americans in this thread, it would appear not many of you are aware of "Only Fools & Horses". It's the greatest TV show ever made. I insist that if you are a fan of British comedy, you really need to watch this.

[–]Maticus 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just like the dryness. I think most American comedies are to afraid to be as dry as the British. For a good example of this is the Office, where in the UK it was really dry, the American version is not quite, its almost slapstick.

Arrested Development is the pinnacle of American comedy. I would say Spaced is the pinnacle of the modern dry British comedy.

[–]SiliconRain 9 points10 points ago

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Most popular US comedies tend to be far more slapstick than British ones, particularly with regards to physical humour and canned laughter. I think that's why Curb is very popular in Britain since it's a lot dryer than the average US sitcom.

Having said that, it's been getting a little more slapstick-ish in the last series or two.

[–]nothas 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i think it's fear that the american audience won't pick up on it if the joke isn't hitting them in the face. not much room for subtlety in american tv show humor these days. tim & eric still manage to pull off quite a bit of subtle things tho.

Yeah, I forgot that one. That shit fucking rocks. Hugh Dennis is a ledge. He's also on the "mock the week" and he pretty much always steals the show.

As a Brit that moved to the US, I strongly disagree. The UK makes a ton of utter shit comedy, but it never makes it over to the US. Just because of the media power it has in the world, even America's shitty sitcoms find their way across the world.

The truly terrifying thing is that there are American sitcoms so bad that they don't get exported.

[–]Lolworth 6 points7 points ago

Canned laughter

Absolutely the worst thing about American comedy. Especially multi-camera stuff like "Two and half men". Something happens, audients erupts with laughter. Someone famous walks in the room, audience goes batshit insane.... it's incredibly difficult to watch. Perhaps the reason Scrubs and The Office come accross so well.

[–]jgclark 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not always canned laughter. Seinfeld, for example, was filmed in front of a live studio audience, and it had some of the worst offenses. Kramer would enter, and the audience reaction would go on for over 15 seconds, leaving the actors to just stand there awkwardly.

[–]Xpress_interest 4 points5 points ago

I find British comedy canned laughter much more grating, but probably because I'm not used to it. I tried watching Coupling and the laugh track was so pathetically awful I had to shut it off after 10 minutes. Everyone is used to their own stench I guess.

[–]XoYo 2 points3 points ago

And Louie. That's certainly dry enough for British tastes.

Actually, if you squint hard enough, Hitler never did invade Czechoslovakia.

He just occupied it, twice -- once partially, practically alongside instigating the formation of a breakaway Slovak puppet-state, and once the rest of the way. Well, the rest of what was left of it.

The first occupation was a fulfillment of the Munich Agreement, between (mainly, at least) DE, FR, and UK. (CS was strictly not invited.) Its actual wording is, surprisingly, not lazily googlable, but the lay understanding among laymen like me (and the Czechs, etc.) who have some reason to give a care, is that is was an agreement for FR and UK not to intervene against DE occupation of the large, militarily and economically critical, mostly-ethnically-German border area called the Sudetenland as long as Germany "as long as Hitler promised to go no further" (wording is Wikipedia's). Whether that meant no further territorial claims or no higher level of aggression (war) I'm not sure, though hey, probably the former.

Shortly afterwards, Czechoslovakia capitulated and agreed to the occupation (though of course they had no real choice), and so no invasion in the sense of soldiers coming in and shooting at people, outside of reactions to sporadic and futile acts of Czech heroism, took place. But of course they were unwanted, so it was an invasion in that sense.

The second occupation... err, invasion... was the occupation of rump Czechoslovakia -- the invasion after Hitler "promised not to invade Czechoslovakia," that is, after he signed the Munich agreement. Incidentally there wasn't much for Hitler to invade... err, occupy... this time, as a puppet state had long been instigated in Slovakia, and as far as I lazily understand, about the same time as Occupation #2, Hungary went and took a chunk of the Slovak puppet state, as well as of the formerly-Czechoslovak Carpathian Ruthenia, to the east of Slovakia (i.e. at the opposite end from Czech of the fat sausage that was Czechoslovakia) which had been making its own pitiable attempt at independence.

Anyway. This occupation took place with only sporadic fighting, because this occupation too took place after capitulation by the Czech (this time) leadership. But yes, I guess you would have to squint extra-hard to not see this as violating Hitler's "promise to go no further." And in that case, why not just go ahead and call it an invasion. But... try to squint that extra mile!

Jez: I dunno, I think I made a pretty good impression.

Mark: Jeremy, please, don't smile like that. You're not James Bond, you're disgusting.

Jez: I am James Bond.
