I never understood this logic. What situation is actually good for this? You can't just set up a normal date and then pretend to be having a good time, knowing you intend to end it. That's just disingenuous and nasty.

Even if you do set up a specific place and time to meet only with the intention of breaking up with them face to face, they must know something is up when you ask to meet them, unless once again you're pretending to be totally happy with the way things are. If you call them up and say "we need to talk" then now they have to drive all the way TO the meeting place with panic and dread, and they have to drive BACK with a broken heart. I'll take the cold and quick break up in the comfort of my own home every time over the drawn out painstravaganza that is the personal meeting break up.

You go get coffee with them. If you're dating someone chances are there is a place within 15 minutes of each of you, so the drive isn't nearly as dramatic as you make it out to be. Breaking up with someone from your home is shitty and basically tells them that they don't matter enough to you to get an explanation. Meeting with them is the most amiable way to end things. It allows you to be kind and honest and still be a friend if the other party is willing to once they've had time.

I have to disagree with you here, as someone who was recently broken up with in a public place. I would honestly have really appreciated not only a "we need to talk" phone call ahead of time, but also having had him do it in private. Taking me out to coffee to break up with me seemed like a tactic to keep my from being able to react honestly and emotionally in public. If you are going to break up with someone, you need to deal with the emotional consequences. Breaking up with someone in a public place seems kind of cowardly to me. Even over the phone, at least the person being dumped can have the chance to emote. I know break ups suck, and it's never easy to dump someone. Really, though, I never got to tell him how I felt about it because we were in a crowded restaurant, and I needed to leave rather than allow hundreds of strangers see me cry. He basically got off without having to see any of the pain he caused.

Yes, I think the "we need to talk" call needs to happen first to allow the other person to prepare a little bit. My point of seeing them in person is so they are allowed to react and let you know how they feel. When I say "coffee shop" I don't mean a Starbucks in New York City, but some little place with outdoor seating that's not too crowded. I think it's important that the other person is able to respond, but they shouldn't be hysterical. If the person that's doing the breaking up is not an asshole, they want to be able to talk, but probably want to make it a clean break without having to console the other person. Think about it. If you're breaking up with someone, while you're wiling to answer questions and talk about it, you're not going to want to be their emotional outlet anymore.

I get what you mean. In this particular situation there wasn't any talking or answering questions. It was just being in a crowded restaurant and having someone I cared about tell me he was leaving me for another woman. I was so shocked and angry all I could do was leave; we've never spoken about it since.

If you are in a situation where you are still dating, then I can understand not setting up a date to break up with someone. However, you can still call them. This was listed as gf in the phone, so I doubt this is the case. If you can't pick up the phone, you are either being intentionally cruel, are a coward, or are trying to act cool(douchebag).
