Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

To those that are wondering about context: In the 19th century when Americans figured out how to tan Buffalo hide, they ended up hunting the Buffalo to near extinction. Hence the picture which shows millions of Buffalo skulls. Sadly, the Buffalo was also one of the main dietary sources for the Natives, and as a consequence Native prophets from the Paiute tribe emerged preaching of a dance, the Ghost dance I believe, that hoped would help return the Buffalo to their lands and also give natives access to a world that was without the white men. The Americans were threatened by this Ghost dance and their response ended up with a massacre of 300 Natives at Wounded Knee. The massacre at Wounded Knee signaled the closing of the frontier for settlement. If you are interested in this subject look up Manfiest Destiny; some might disagree but Manifest Destiny and the failures of the Monroe doctrine continue to shape American policy to this very day.

I'm pretty sure there are less than a million skulls in that picture

[–]Tasadar 1 point2 points ago

Easily one million skulls there:

The pile in picture appears to be roughly 30 skulls wide from the edge of the picture to the man (who we'll say is on a corner of a large rectangular prism). The point which he is standing is roughly 45 skulls high. This requires the final dimension the long length of the pile to be at least 750 skulls long which seems well within reason, it goes very very far back, it's difficult to guage. This ignores the fact that the pile is much wider at the bottom than the top as well as the smaller block on the side. If we can call the pile a frustum and allow the skulls within the pile which we can't see count (obviously) it could easily be a million+.

I'm not really sure either....for all I know there may not be that much of a difference. I can only count to 22 on my fingers and toes.

Sitting Bull's horse (which was gifted to him by the proprietor of the show he toured with in Canada) did a funny move at the Battle of Wounded Knee as a result of a gun shot that the natives saw as the Ghost Dance.

It's revolting that a lot of them were slaughtered like that.

But on the plus side, those skulls would make some pretty damn cool necromancer masks.

The correct thing to do here was obvious. Round them up and domesticate them instead of breeding cattle! -Captain Hindsight

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Turns out most buffalo are hybrids with cattle anyway.

" Custer State Park in South Dakota is home to 1,500 bison, one of the largest publicly held herds in the world, but there are questions about the genetic purity of the animals. Wildlife officials believe that free roaming and genetically pure herds on public lands in North America can be found only in Yellowstone National Park and the Yellowstone Park Bison Herd, the Henry Mountains Bison Herd at the Book Cliffs and Henry Mountains in Utah, at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota, Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary in the Northwest Territories, Elk Island National Park and Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta, and Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan. Another population, the Antelope Island Bison Herd on Antelope Island in Utah, consisting of 550 to 700 bison, is also one of the largest and oldest public herds in the United States, but the bison in that herd are considered to be only semi-free roaming, since they are confined to the Antelope Island. In addition, recent genetic studies indicate that, like most bison herds, the Antelope Island Bison Herd has a small number of hybrid genes from Domestic Cattle."

"Recent genetic studies of privately owned herds of bison show that many of them include animals with genes from domestic cattle. For example, the herd on Santa Catalina Island, isolated since 1924, after being brought there for a movie shoot, were found to be mostly crossbreeds.[23] It is estimated that there are as few as 12,000 to 15,000 pure bison in the world."
