Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I upvoted, but I still think you have to be crazy to fly to the moon. Let's face it, one thing fucks up and you're sky pizza.

I feel like sky pizza would be lucky. Imagine if they simply passed by the moon.

No, religious extremism flies you into buildings.

Wouldn't be religious extremists without religion, now would there?

Evil is not inherent in religion, it is inherent in man.

religion has nothing to do with this anymore.

osama bin laden is/was by no means a muslim. there is NOT EVEN ONE scripture that allows the killing of "kafirs"

in fact, muhammad(saw) himself said that even people who insult God or religion are just to be left alone!

And the armies in the crusades weren't Christians because Jesus clearly taught that violence was wrong. In other news, Hitler wasn't Catholic, Lenin, Stalin and Mao weren't communists and no Scotsmen have ever been sex maniacs.

are you saying we should get rid of both?

All ideologies have extremists. Therefore we must purge all ideologies.

Extremist, not fundamentalist.

He might have been raised as an orthodox, but he was an atheist most of his life, and promoted atheism (following Lenine's ideas that religion is opiate for the people). He persecuted the Orthodox Church, only allowing it during WWII as a politically controlled organisation, for patriotic propaganda.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_Christians_in_the_Soviet_Union

Stalin proclaimed atheism as an ideological imperative and was instrumental in trying to eliminate religion from the Solviet Union. He was personally responsible for almost completely wiping out the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1930s, he had nearly all of its clergy shot or sent to labour camps, and was responsible for the deaths of over 100,000 religious induviduals. It was only revived as a patriotic exercise in the run up to WWII.

Fucking hell read a fucking history book and stop getting your facts from r/atheism, they are a bunch of utterly-deluded fuckwits who come up with excuse after excuse not to face this awkward fact. Stalin was an atheist extremist who killed far more people for his explicitly anti-religious ideology than the Muslims on 9/11 did for theirs (thats also ignoring the hugely political reasons for 9/11). The fact that those he killed to advance his atheist ideology only make up a small fraction of the total number of deaths he caused is probably something you can take either way.

An ideological battle between Communism and Capitalism motivated the race to the moon.

And it is a shame that now extremists on both side appear to think that victory is shown by destroying the others way of life.

Why not prove the soundness of your system by good works and human endeavour?

Whilst I liked the simplicity of this cartoon - and your comment goes some way to explaining this, the 'godless' reds of the cold war was exactly the reason 'god' finally got into the US constitution, in 1955, i believe.

This meant that you could argue that 'religion' gets you to support an arab leader, train him, fuel him and then totally fuck with everyone until you get your religious asses handed to you by a different bunch of religious extremists.

I mean. NASA was funded by a country that believes that it is united under a Christian god...

...and that blows.

[–]ThatsMisterDickToYou 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're absolutely right about the simplicity of my comment.

It makes no mention of the Cold War impact on Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan, North Korea etcetcetc. Quite shameful on my part really.

But I think all history is marked by these failures in human judgement, by the failures in our compassion and behaviour. Each generation has to own and carry these failures and hopefully offer them to the next generation as a testament and warning. They are to a large extent the cost of our progress.

Ideally each generation should try and engineer their systems so that the inevitable conflicts generate the most amount of forward motion and the greatest chance of human progress.

And to tie this to your point I do think that religion can play a role in this. I am no believer but I disagree that religion [or even organised faith] is fundamentally bad.

Our problem is not faith or even the flavour of the God - it is that the 2 extreme sides have denied reason. They are proud of it. Evidence and science are soft and weak. Ignorance is an asset and candidates will be competitively stupid.

And by losing reason from the field there is no common territory or set of tools for them to meet and debate. Instead of logic each side throws spells, planes, incantations and bombs. If I believed in God I would pray for a new Enlightenment.

You are absolutely right. The Cold War was a terrible thing in a number of ways. But the USA of that generation still understood the argument of having and funding NASA. The motives may not be all pure but there is some good in this. The real tragedy is that the USA today would not be able to make or understand the same decision.

TL;DR - Oh don't bother. Really.

Science makes missiles, bombs, planes that fly into buildings.

Religion makes water into wine.

Am I doing this right?

/r/Atheism is over here.

I feel like using 9/11 to circlejerk about how religion is bad, without considering any of the deeper cultural causes behind the attack itself is cultural over-generalization and misinformation just as bad as the ideological problems that led to the attacks in the first place.

Thankfully, you don't have an entire culture of uneducated, impoverished, desperate, atheists to preach your message of hate to.
