Please can somebody explain to me why he needs to take his shirt off to slap a guy once?

[–]pelito 109 points110 points ago*

When we were kids in the Philippines you have to take your shirt off before a fight. You want to show the other kid you're Bruce Lee and he's about to get a beat down. Another reason is because we poor. You don't want to go home with a shirt all torn because you'll get 'The Belt'.

[–]shooeeeeee 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i was gonna say that in a fight your opponent might pull your shirt over your head and then just beat you like that.

[–]Gravedigger3 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, this is the best reason. I've been in fights where they've grabbed my collar or sleeve and even if they never manage to get it over your head to blind you it gives them a way to easily hold onto you and throw your stance off.

[–]oreng 1 point2 points ago

If you're poor and don't have clothing, wouldn't you want to get a belt?

[–]pelito 8 points9 points ago

Not quite. Watch a hockey fight. Then you'll understand why he took his shirt off. Nothing sucks more than getting the living piss beaten out of you just because the other dude managed to pull your shirt up over your head immobilizing your arms. The dude is probably a cunt, but that's not why he did it. This isn't an, "I'm a douche who MUST fight shirtless because I'm so manly." Type thing. This is a, "I don't want this guy pulling my shirt over my head and beating the living piss out of me." Type thing.

[–]nilleftw 132 points133 points ago

[–]fireflash38 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Looks completely staged to me. The guy who gets hit doesn't move at all when the guy in front of him takes off his shirt. Most people would be at least 'wtf are you doing'.

[–]broden 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's staged by the camera man and the provoker. This is the simplest and most likely explanation. These are schoolkids, they don't need to fake drama, just set it up and record it.

[–]lolwutpear 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The girl in the back, near the windows, also appears to be recording the scene. Totally staged.

[–]OoogaOoogaYoink 68 points69 points ago

Well, that was probably the last of several taps. You'd have to see the entire thing before you could make that judgment call.

Prof: Don't stop (could also be translated as "Don't interrupt him", in this context). Continue, about the US...

Student: So around 1914, that war in the US... slapped

Prof: Don't stop, I'll give you a failing grade!

Seeing as this was a cheap shot, and the guy is obviously a complete idiot, I'm sure he's just seen other people do it, so he did it too. My 11th grade physics teacher told us all year he would show us how to win 90% of all physical fights in the first ten seconds at the end of the school year. When he got up to the front of the class on the last day, he said "When the moron you're fighting starts to take his shirt off, kick him in the balls, and punch him in the face. He's got a shirt over his head."

[–]undieminer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting. One of my first lessons in self defense was when necessary, break one or two of your opponents legs. Your first action should be to create a wave of shock and awe. Next action would be to GTFO of there. Now a direct kick to the balls doesn't go astray either.

[–]gathmoon 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

what the fuck self defense class did you take? Break the strongest bones in the body first... really? If you want shock and awe go for the nuts nose and nips(for women) also the mid top of the foot and middle of the chest for knocking the wind out of them. i would never take your sd class.... ever.

[–]undieminer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The arms and hands can provide sufficient protection to most areas you describe. The knees and ankles provide better targets and often require a change in the attackers' center of gravity, which is then more easily exploited. Optimally, an opponent should not require a second attack to effect the best outcome. Conflicts that last more than 20 seconds are for zuki babies :)

[–]The3rdWorld 9 points10 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

weird i was taught to maintain poise while rationally edging the person into standing down, fencing and line-drawing being key before quietly retreating from the box and letting the situation diffuse - if in the very unlikely event someone simply charges at you then deflect or absorb their blows while developing a fence or grapple which will allow you to separate and make room to establish calm.

I suppose the difference is i wasn't learning something designed to flatter the egos and macho images of ineffectual and moronic douche-bags, moves that might actually cause someone serious physical problems were left until there was no other option - certainly they weren't lorded as being opening gambits. Oh and this wasn't for pussy reasons either, it had something to do with honour and self-respect but if you haven't got those bones in your body then it's entirely practical - if you start off going for someones balls and miss then not only have you just attacked the most protected part of their defensive zone but you've enraged them - it's likely that you're in some way tangled with your weight off balance, held somewhere inside their knee strike zone, the fist strike zone, their control point (for balance) and their grapple zone - this means they basically have their pick of ways to attack you for maximum damage and absolutely no moral or psychological reason not to.

The idiocy about balls being easy to attack is foolishly misunderstood - yes they're soft and hurt if you squish them, they're also at the base of the centre line - if your opponent is paying attention then invading his central line is exceptionally hard plus you open yourself up to massive counter attacks, your punch is putting your weight and body into his control zone or a kick is putting you off balance - if that foot hits his strong thigh or pelvis as it almost certainly will then odds are you're going to find yourself sprawled on the floor with a very angry opponent standing above you - the exact worse place to be in a fight.

That said i am a big lad, i have the strength and dexterity to hold myself in a brawl; if you don't then either hand over your wallet, pay for the drink you just spilled, apologise to his girlfriend or whatever is getting you into the fight - a misunderstanding? start your explanation with 'sorry' and don't be an ass about it - some jerk like in the video comes at you, RUN! possibly yelling 'whoa, whoa it wasn't me' It's what i'd do if someone bigger than me came, it's what they'd do if someone bigger than them came.... Trying to take down a big strong guy with some special punch or clever jab really isn't worth the effort, when you win a fight you've got to be ready for another and another and another - certainly in a bar, you knock out someone's buddy (especially with a ball buster) and you just know he's going to join in next, maybe they all are.

Violence is not big or clever, avoid it at all costs - if you need to use violence to save someone else (because you can't both run away) then do it in a sensible and restrained manor making sure to guard yourself and others, you're fighting for an exit strategy which you should have at least a notion of before entering the fray. (if only our governments thought of that one...)

-Heh oh and last time i got kicked in the balls i closed my legs around the stupid bitches foot swung my hips so she fell over and resting my knee on her other knee so she couldn't strike again asked her what exactly she had been expecting to happen - sheepishly she said sorry, i let her up and she bitched to everyone all night that i hadn't fought fair, lol.

[–]undieminer 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

upvote for you, and many more if I could. An efficient exit strategy should be the primary response in most situations. The last ditch response should be to stand and fight. I'll even take a reasonable beat down if i am sure to avoid the last ditch activity. I never and have never started a fight. I am an excellent runner too. I am a pacifist actually, and would even give up my brunch money to avoid any type of violence. If I am cornered, and about to suffer lifetime injury then my only option is to make a mess of things. Then I call an ambulance and practice my first aid skills.

[–]oni-san 0 points1 point ago

It can be difficult to grab his fingers if he's waving his hands around. However, his legs are larger targets and tend to be more stationary.

A good strike to the solar plex can knock the wind out of anyone and buy you a good 5-10 seconds of sprinting time before the opponent recovers (source: This can cause the diaphragm to spasm, resulting in difficulty in breathing—a sensation commonly known as "getting the wind knocked out of you" )

It's been my personal philosophy also. Luckily I've never had to test it. But seriously if someone is trying to inflict physical harm upon me (outside a ring/field) why should I worry about dignity?

Haven't you ever seen a fight in the NHL? Notice how they always pull their shirts over each other's heads to immobilize the other guy's arms? Once you've been in a fight and the other guys does this to you. You learn very quickly never to let that happen to you again. So, like this dude here. You take your shirt off before you fight. If prevents the shirt over the head trick that hockey players always do to each other.

[–]purepower 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed that's the reason in the NHL. I doubt this guy got tapped on the head and in his mind quickly said, "Better get my shirt off before I slap this guy so that if there is a retaliation he can't get it over my head". Really doubt it had anything to do with his "strategy".

Also, as someone mentioned, this was staged so it was really just for show. It does add something to the video, to be sure.

[–]The3rdWorld 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

indeed, also considering in hockey the other guy is as massive as you - the guy he hit wasn't very likely to put up that kind of sustained fight.

Is Afghanistan where the terrorists came from? Where they were trained? Where their leader was thought to be?

Saudi, Pakistan, Saudi - ???

[–]redhatnation 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The mastermind, Bin Laden, was in Afghanistan at the time. It's possible that some of the Saudi-born terrorists trained in Afghanistan or Pakistan. Recall that training camps were sprinkled all over Afghanistan until 2001.

[–]richalex2010 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not all of those things, but the terrorists didn't need to be from there and the training camps didn't need to be there. The organization and the leader was in Afghanistan at the time, and were operating with the support and protection of the Afghan government. Al-Qaeda sympathizers (including imams in areas away from Afghanistan) were able to attract people to their cause. Al-Qaeda had also been operating in Sudan and Saudi Arabia before getting kicked out and moving to Afghanistan; their network was not limited to the local region, they were just based there (not unlike McDonald's; they're headquartered in one country, but have locations around the world). To keep on with the McDonald's analogy, if you wanted to destroy the entire organization, where would you attack? A hundred franchises, or the headquarters?

Another choice is to do nothing. A third choice is to pick up an assault rifle and kill 'em both, and kill a bystander at the same time. . . . And somebody says, Well, you know, why did you do that? Well they'd douched it up with Kuwait a few years before, and Saddam was being a totalitarian asshole. He genocided Kurds, and he violated pretty much every single agreement from the Gulf War peace agreement. Basically it was a shit show, but the U.S., in my opinion, can't intervene in every single shit show in the world. Maybe they did it because they thought that they'd seem weak if they let Saddam get away with pissing on our treaty. Maybe do a Gulf War type deal where we run in, put Saddam out of power, and leave.

[–]PartyMode 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, they don't, but like I said, Saddam violated the treaty. I bet it was about seeming weak.

[–]Menocchio 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry but I'm not English speaker, and I don't know what "it was about seeming weak" means, neither what "it" represents in this sentence. Anyway Hussein was not the first dude in the world in violate a treaty, neither has been the last one. You know America do not invade every country that violate a treaty, thanks God. So there we have the reasons not why Irak was attacked, because other countries have not being attacked with same reasons:

1- Being a dictatorship.

2- Having mass destructions weapons (that the didn't had).

3- Links to al-Qaeda (that the didn't had).

4- Some treaty that somehow allows USA to nuke Irak periodically.

5- A genocide.

All thins thinks existed and exists and USA do not invade every country that fit in their. It was not for this.

[–]PartyMode 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was incoherent. We haven't nuked Iraq. I don't really know what you're talking about there so I can't respond. It means our invasion. I'm pretty sure America would invade if countries started violating treaties with them. I'm not really defending it. I was against it from the get-go. I'm just telling you why it happened. War with huge profit potential for military industrial + dictator to provide cassus belli = match made in military heaven. If we didn't fuck up the nation building so hard after, and we'd just taken Saddam out of power, the conflict might have ended up alright.

[–]richalex2010 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, and we (the US and the rest of NATO) started it a year and a half before invading Iraq. Iraq was all about Saddam and his (nonexistent) WMDs, not terrorism. Afghanistan was a war that we entered with good reason (find and kill the terrorists, and we knew that they were in Afghanistan when we started), a decent plan, and widespread international support.

[–]tpman9393 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

First off. Great reply. Secondly i was really being facetious with my comment. I know that Al Qaeda doesn't really have any power besides maybe in the border region and in propaganda.

Ok, every time I see this gif, the arms confuse the hell out of me. It looks like he curls the slapping arm in, and throws the other one out to make the appearance of a hard slap... Plus the slappee throwing his hands ups looks too cartoony. I don't know, everyone else buys it, but I cannot explain the arms.

This is a funny video, but it has nothing to do with the US or its reaction to 9/11 — which in targeting Afghanistan and the Taliban was fairly measured and an appropriate response — Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and was only sold that way to the public out of political expediency.

You can feel free to foment this belief of the US as randomly bitch smacking someone unrelated to a wrong, but then you're just being an idiot about the true nature of American imperialism, and our nations foreign policy agenda and long term geopolitical strategy.

What is the link between the Iraq invasion, and 11/9?

[–]richalex2010 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There isn't one. Iraq was invaded because of suspected WMDs (which never existed). Afghanistan is the war that was started over 9/11, and that was because Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden were in Afghanistan, and operating with the support and protection of the Afghan government. People are just shitting on the US, making up links between an unjustified war and the justification for a completely unrelated (and very much justified) war.

I hate the anti-americanism on Reddit. I am a Canadian, but I just hate this. On this day, to post something like this, is to first massively belittle the damage and pain that America suffered on this day and second to suggest that America's retaliation was unjust.

You know what, Iraq wasn't a good move. But this, on this day, along with some of the other posts, is very inappropriate.

Bush admin. reaction to 9/11 was actually even worse. Al Qaeda didn't try to make anyone think Iraq had anything to do with it. That was a creation of the Bush admin.

I think we're all kind of numb to it at this point but I feel like the Bush admin. doesn't get nearly enough blame for what they did by using 9/11 as a justification to start an unnecessary war in Iraq.

It's disturbing that there are still many people, to this day, that claim that the Iraq War was just.

[–]richalex2010 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have no recollection of anyone claiming that the Iraq war was about terrorism (with the possible exception of reporters/commentators). We invaded Afghanistan (which nobody seems to remember) because of 9/11, because that's where the attacks were planned and supported from (Al-Qaeda had the support and protection of the Afghan government at the time), and that's where Al-Qaeda was based.

Iraq was justified by WMDs (which didn't exist), not terrorism. And even though the beginning was completely unjustified, we've hopefully left Iraq in a better place than when it started. They no longer have a genocidal dictator at the top, they have a democratic government, and Kurdistan is vastly improved over how it was during Saddam's reign (they were the victims of the genocide mentioned earlier). Not nearly enough to start a war over, but at least some good came of it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At that time the American people wanted a war just as much as Bush and his administration did. Now, in retrospect, people have their panties in a bunch saying it was a terrible idea and hate Bush for it without taking any personal responsibility.

[–]sulaymanf 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In terms of logic, yes. However, a large portion of the American public believed Iraq was involved in 9/11. Bush and Rice and Rumsfeld and Cheney also tried to connect the two for people.

[–]slappysimian 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Saddam used WMDs in the past, it was thought he still had them, since he was Arab it was assumed he could share them with people who would use them against the US. At the time it was dubious, but possible.

Ended up everybody hated him as much as we did and there was no way he was going to be sharing with Al Queda.

Saddam was walking a thin line where he was scared of being invaded for having them and fearful of an uprising if people thought he didn't have them
