Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It's not in any worse taste than what the mainstream news networks have been jerking off about for the last two weeks.

You know, I live in central Texas. We have all these fires going on right now. Big ones, ones that actually wiped half a city off the map (and cost four coworkers their homes).

We have TV's on mute with closed captioning in the call center I work in. It's almost always on the local news station. I turned around and glanced at the TV on Friday and I saw this building on fire. A high rise, on fire. All of us that noticed it were kind of freaking out because there was all this smoke all around town (really bad, like the craziest fog you've ever seen) and we were all worried about our homes and our city.

It took us all about five minutes to realize we were looking at some building burning from 9/11 ten years ago instead of coverage of the local fucking fires happening not 20 miles away!

It was sad, yes, but it still pisses me off. There are other things going on right now that are much more relevant. I don't care about 9/11 right now. I care about my apartment burning down and worrying that firemen are going to be knocking on my door and telling me we have to go.

Meh, the attacks on London, Madrid, and countless in the middle east (and probably a lot more I was too young to be aware of), are never remembered, and I don't even live in the US. Yes I guess comparing the 2500-3000 lives to the hundreds lost is a big difference but lives were still lost, they were people who lost family members. I just don't see the need to put one above the other, or to publicize it so much. I can't imagine losing a family member but having it all over the news to remind you of that day seems counterproductive. My 2 cents anyways.

The London ones don't really get huge anniversary coverage in the UK because we've moved past it. Yes there are memorials for the people caught in them, which is right and proper, and a 2 minute silence was held the year following the bombings, but it's just not a big defining moment for the country.

[–]useful-idiot 7 points8 points ago*

The ultimate form of control is fear and the fear that you could lose your life at any moment. I call it: Fear Based Mind Control

[–]dirtside 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's just about the dumbest thing to fear, too, since eventually you will lose your life. Worrying that it might happen earlier than the average is just a waste of time.

It's one of the largest bombing attacks in terms of fatalities in Britain since WWII - I think the only one larger was the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in the 80s. So while there's a lot less fatalities (even if you compensate for the size of the countries) it's still a major attack.

edit: Adding "in terms of fatalities". Also slowly_over's comment mentions a few other attacks that have occurred in the UK that I didn't think of.

Except 7/7 was by homegrown terrorists, your point is valid but I think it is worth noting that and British people particularly should know more about it because it isn't just a foreign security issue. There is a real problem with Islamic extremists/Islamists in the UK (particularly in places like Tower Hamlets where the impact has been scary) in the way there is not really in America.

IMO acting like it is a pure security issue to be dealt with by the police/intelligence community is a mistake as is a lack of engagement on the subject by mainstream political parties which has led to racist far-right extremist groups like the EDL emerging and making things worse.

[–]slowly_over 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the UK we grew somewhat familiar with terrorist attacks on home soil due to the activities of the Provisional IRA 1969-1997 campaign. Although the 7/7 attacks were shocking, they don't stand out as the single most outrageous terrorist atrocity in our history, in the way that the attack on the WTC does for the US*. (We recall, for example, the Brighton Hotel bombing in 1984 that could have killed Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, or the truck bomb that wrecked Manchester city centre in 1996.)

*I know the US also had the Oklahoma bombing, but as McVeigh was a US citizen acting alone, his execution gave closure (and left no enemy to construct a 'War On Terror' against.)

[–]dirtside 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And not to underplay the 7/7 bombings, but only ("only") 52 people were killed in those bombings. If it had been three thousand, I imagine the reaction would have been much stronger. (Probably not as OMGPANIC as the U.S. reaction to 9/11, but still.)

[–]glglglglgl 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For a fair comparison, it would need to be about 600 fatalities, once you've adjusted for the fact that the UK is about a fifth of the size of the US.

[–]dirtside 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good point, I hadn't considered that. (Although I don't know that the psychological response scales quite that well with population... once there's "millions" of people, 600 in country A might get the same response as country B, even if B has 5 times the population.)

[–]glglglglgl 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Definitely true. I guess there must be a certain tipping point where the number of fatalities just becomes too much.

[–]YourLogicAgainstYou 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

American here -- the London and Madrid bombings do still get occasional mentions in U.S. media to this day. I don't think anyone has forgotten.

What drives me up a wall is that most people seem to have completely forgotten the twin U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.

. We have all these fires going on right now. Big ones, ones that actually wiped half a city off the map

Oh, yeah, how's that going? It was all over reddit a while ago, but now the frontpage is being infested by cats again. Any update?

[–]Osiris32 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Go HERE, this is a full update on the fires in Texas, reported as of 15 minutes ago. Basically, an area the size of the state of Connecticut has burned since the beginning of fire season, thousands of homes and other structures have been lost, and there have been a few deaths.

The scary part is that his is exactly the same as the 2008 fire season, but instead of California, it's all happening in Texas.

[–]feureau 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, shit. ... that sucks.

[–]Osiris32 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's really scary is the potential. California is much more diverse topographically. Ridglines and moutain ranges keep a fire growing slowly, or can completely contain it. Texas, on the other hand, is much more uniform, giving fires a chance to create their own wind patterns. The area between Houston, Austin, and San Antonio (the only area of Texas that I've spent any time in outside of Corpus Christi) is very flat. It's also about the size of the state of Maine. A fire that got going could gobble up millions of acres out there, destroying thousands if not millions of homes.

If you live anywhere near a fire, learn to protect your property. Create what's called a Defensible Space around your home and any other structures. This means removing any flamable material (tall grass, decorative plants, wood piles, trash, even trees) from an area at least 30 feetwide from your house. Seal up any vents. Seal the underside of your eaves. Seal off your chimney. Set up sprinkler systems on your roof. And prepare to evacuate.

I normally work for the feds as a wildland firefighter, but am out for the summer with an ankle injury. So I feel it's still my duty to get information out that keeps people informed, and maybe, just maybe, could save a life or a house.

[–]DrMonkeyLove 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not in any worse taste than what the mainstream news networks have been jerking off about for the last two weeks.

No shit, this has been pissing me off too. I get talking about the 10th anniversary of 9/11... for a day! But this 2 week long marathon 9/11 wank session is ridiculous. It's not like the attacks lasted for a month or something.

And it really pisses me off that 9/11 seems to have become the defining characteristic for the US. It's like it's the only bad thing that's happened in the last 10 years. The media acts like it's the most devastating event in the whole of human history. I get that 3000 people dying like that is terrible. OK, I can acknowledge that, but come on! 2500 people die every day from heart disease in this country. That's almost 1000000 people every year. And that's probably more easily prevented that preventing acts of terrorism!

People act like terrorism is the greatest evil that has ever faced our country. It's not. That's stupid. Look at the statistics. If you're worried about dying, put down the cheeseburger and get on the treadmill.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So what you're really saying is you didn't buy the 9/11 beach towel and beer koozie at Wal-Mart? And you call yourself a patriot.

[–]Have_A_RealityCheck 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Turn on the TV to the memorial service right now and watch the loved ones left behind read the names of their husbands that have died. For many of them, this is still very real.

Maybe its an east coast perspective, but for millions of Americans, this still matters. It was the most dramatic terrorist attack and lose of civilian life in American history.

Its only been ten years. Yes, some people abuse tragedy for the own persona benefit. But for many, spending the first 11 days of September talking about that day is a cathartic process that helps remind us that we are not the only ones who still feel the void left behind.

Objection!

I used both all-caps and bolded text, which on top of that contained no punctuation whatsoever in order to reduce the probability of my post being misconstrued as serious! While possibility that the poster of such text were sharing their true opinion on the matter still exists, the post was intentionally posted with the exact same formatting as the one it was a reply to, thus forcing the reader to accept it as at most as serious as its parent!
I consciously considered the fact that you are probably being facetious! You were indeed sarcastically impersonating a person who would be bothered by 9/11 jokes, and thus I sarcastically impersonated a person who would antagonize such people!
Finally I added the adjective "fucking" to minimize chance of appearing serious and to maximize incoming karma from people who do not think twice before upvoting posts they find amusing!

It's in fine taste. The only good thing coming out of 9/11 is the public's skepticism on our government.

How about you ask that question in http://www.reddit.com/r/toosoon/comments/kai9v/nyaneleven/ where you took it from, after all, that's all r/toosoon is about. :)

[–]timothyjwood 1 point2 points ago

Yes, it takes 22.3 years before something tragic is funny. I could go into the details, but it's very scientific.

Does anyone even use the search bar before they post anymore? Just typing in "Nyan Eleven" turns up 8 previous posts.

You know, the suffering of those families has been exploited to its last drop to fuel great evil in this world. One could be forgiven for being sick of or desensitized to it, and a nyan cat joke is pretty small time stuff in comparison.

The cultural spectacle of 9/11, now that's in bad taste.

Gentlemen, why do you not laugh? With the fearful strain that is upon me day and night, if I did not laugh, I should die.

And

I laugh because I must not cry, that is all, that is all.

Both from Abe Lincoln when asked how he could joke during the civil war.

yes. i am not in opposition of humor as a tool for grieving; it is important. but then there is making light of a disaster, which diminishes the gravity and importance of the event. images like this, so carelessly thrown around, are the reason people have an indifferent perspective to the world.

Except for the fact that on Reddit, as with 99.9% of the rest of the internet, popular opinion seems to be that crap like this passes for funny and nothing is sacred. So technically, you're the one downvoting for disagreeing with popular opinion. Stick to your principles, good sir. I have left you a gun with one downvote in the chamber. I trust you'll do the honorable thing.

Hmm it just seems like a cheap, unintelligent way to make an offensive joke. Offence is no problem, but it needs some 'smart', this leans far to heavily towards the tasteless without being witty.

Well might as well regular US citizens benefit from 9/11 too. I mean congress has already milked this disaster for the past ten years. They take away your freedoms in the name of 9/11.
