Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Submission Rules

Is your post not showing up? Do not delete it. Wait 5 minutes to give AutoModerator a chance to look at it; it approves most submissions automatically. If it hasn't shown up after more than 5 minutes, simply message the moderators and ask us to let it through.

I learn games by mapping functions to locations. When I see a map of the controller, I'm good. But when a singular button appears on the screen, "Press [yellow] to not die!!!" I'm dead. I know the block key, the switch weapon key, crouch, whatever. But, I have no idea where the yellow button is. I have to look down, and that's long enough for whatever to eat my face.

It doesn't help when Sony makes Japanese Playstations use X=Back O=Confirm and the opposite for the US versions. So much annoyance when switching from one game to another.

Also Microsoft decided XYBA need to be moved from where Nintendo had put them for a good 10 years. Was probably a legal issue, but still annoying as hell.

EDIT: Changed O=Cancel to O=Confirm

[–]jon_titor 1 point2 points ago

Wait...aren't back and cancel the same thing?

If I get what you're saying, I had similar difficulty switching between Squaresoft games from SNES to PSX...but that's the only instance where I really remember that being a problem.

[–]daosy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Until recently the only consoles I'd ever owned were the playstations. I recently got an xbox 360 but still think in terms of the playstation controls so I always press the wrong button when I'm told to press X and have to look for the rest.

[–]GLaDimnotyou 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm the same way. I know spatially exactly where every button is on the controller and exactly what it does when playing, but I can't for the life of me remember which is which in terms of X, Y, A, Z etc. without looking at the controller.

I suck at math. Maybe it's related.

And a fucking biography movie stole best original screenplay from in Bruges. HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?

[–]fuzzytank 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a walking tour in Bruge that goes to all sorts of areas where they filmed the movie. This quote is all over their posters. I always thought maybe the locals wouldn't look too kindly upon this, but I was told most of them have never heard of the movie.

Bruges is just too cool.

[–]Ferwerda 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bruges chiming in here:

I was told most of them have never heard of the movie

This is bullshit. It was a big event when they came to film the movie, and I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find someone in this city who really has never heard about it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Especially considering how small Brugge is.

[–]the_rule 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously, it's impossible to not know about it. Even when you walk past any touristic attraction, some retard tourist wrote "what a shithole" or some other quote from the movie on it. It is a great movie, though.

[–]roboroller 24 points25 points ago

In Bruges; totally overlooked when it came out, slowly gaining cult status, probably in my top fifty films of all time. Good God that is a glorious movie.

[–]Boom_Flaps 2 points3 points ago

I'm pretty sure it was nominated for an oscar.

*edit : It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay in the oscars but lost to Milk.

[–]roboroller 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay. It should have been nominated for more than that. It was generally overlooked by the public although it did get a fairly positive reaction from critics. I remember when it came out I thought about going to see it but it was only in the theater here for two weeks (I live in a fairly large city as well). No one seemed to notice it existed until it came out on DVD and then I started seeing people quoting it and talking about it all over the place. Maybe not totally overlooked, but it certainly didn't get a lot of publicity when it first came out.

Great to see people loving this film. If anyone is interested, Martin McDonagh (who wrote and directed In Bruges) is originally a fucking amazing playwright. I'd recommend reading The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Writer rant over.

Sorta relevant story time! My parents have always thought video games are stupid, so to give them a wider apprecieation for them, I'm teaching them how to play, starting from the ground up. I started my dad out on castlevania for nes this weekend. He does this. Every time he has to jump. THERE'S ONLY TWO FUCKING BUTTONS ON THE CONTROLLER. HOW CAN YOU MIX THEM UP! I can't wait till he gets to xbox. Four buttons, two triggers and two bumpers, plus a d-pad and two analog sticks? God give me patience.

I can honestly say that I never had issues with the controls of a car. Maybe controlling them elegantly took a bit of practise, but I knew where they all were and how to use them...

[–]mylescloutier 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty lucky because I've got a geek for a mother. She played D&D and Zork in high school, went to a nuclear science symposium just for fun, has read Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series about ten times (and I mean that without exaggeration; it's seriously once or twice a year she goes through everything that's been published up to that point), stole my copy of Pokémon Blue and justified it by saying "You've got Red, besides I'm right in the middle of a battle and can't save now," became far more obsessed with World of Warcraft than I ever did, and now, after introducing her to them, is an avid fan of both Magic the Gathering and Minecraft. Her favorite television shows are Adventure Time, The Walking Dead and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding (yeah...I really don't know what's up with that last one...)

She's balanced by my dad, whose idea of fun is to track stock market fluctuations. The time I tried showing him how to play a video game (starting with Animal Crossing on the Wii -- pretty much the easiest game out of all of them to pick up and play) failed miserably.

The both ended up working for the State Department, in Kuwait.

The marriage probably happened because on their first date my dad took her out with some friends to shoot machine guns in the desert. The picture of them holding these massive automatic weapons is up on the mantle.

I still maintain that Hocus Pocus is one of the better Apogee games. I mean, I haven't played it since I was like 10, but I thought it was pretty awesome the...what? Why's everyone looking at me?

[–]spongeloaf 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think at some point in their life everybody played the shareware version of every single Apogee game. I got a gravis gamepad when I was 10, and the disc it came with had Hocus Pocus, Jazz Jackrabbit, One Must Fall 2097, Firefight, Raptor, and Terminal Velocity. And I beat every one of them a hundred times over.

I had Jurassic Park for Sega Genesis. The one where you could play as Grant or the Raptor. My dad was insane at that game. Best purchase ever.

I was trying to teach my wife how to play Killzone 3 the other day. It was one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had. [–]crackox 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You should have started them on the xbox first.

I started my technophobe girlfriend on xbox, playng castle crashers. Which was simple since it was "mash these 2 buttons to attack, joystick move" She didn't need the other controls to play.

So after a few levels and she gets the hang of moving the character and attacking, she saw me casting magic and asked me how to do that. So I explained how you hold the trigger and cast magic. She took a long time to get used to it, but eventually she managed to get comfortable with the pushing of two buttons.

My point is, If you start them on a nes controller, then move up to xbox, its going to be a whole new learning curve again. The familiarity they developed with the nes controller, is wasted.

I don't need to look to see which button it is during the normal course of play. But when it comes to a quicktime event, or some kind of unusual action that says "PRESS Y!!" I ALWAYS have to look. Mentally, the four buttons aren't "a, b, x, y", they're "right, bottom, left, top" or whatever. I have a hell of a time telling other people controls too.

Well, I rarely, very rarely, use my PS3 controller. So, sometimes I forget where X-O-T-S are located.

And I seem to have a different keyboard every year. For instance, right now I'm getting used to the Lenovo layout where the Fn key is where the Ctrl key is, usually.

How long have you used a Dualshock 1/2/3 controller? I've had some sort of DS controller in my hands for about 6(?) years now, and it comes second nature to me. I even went away for 12 months, came back, bought a PS3, bought Demon's Souls, and proceeded to flow right back into my old habits with the controller.

[–]cockwaffle 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok science lesson kids.

First, open this handy image. This is an oversimplification. I've left out a lot of the story and a lot of cool and interesting ways that all of these things go together, but if I get the message across with this and you go looking for more information you'll know the truth when you see it.

The parts in GREEN have to do with language and meaning (the parts in the "Temporal lobe") and vision (the parts in the "occipital lobe"). These are used when you try to hit a button on a controller because of what it says on the sceen.

The parts in RED have to do with what we might call "muscle memory." The part in the "frontal lobe" is where the cells that move your fingers live, and the "cerebellum" has parts that are kind of like an effects pedal for them that turn the "I want to move my hand to avoid that rock" into "I'm going to thumb the analog stick left just a hair"

People who have played a lot of games have programmed the red parts to work with the game. The fact that you can read and know that the button labelled the "B" button is the button that makes your F-zero car brake is irrelevant, since it runs mostly from circuits in and between the "green" parts.

I could bash you on the head and make you unable to understand speech, but if you'd learned to play the game beforehand, you wouldn't need to know how the "B" on the button had to do with the activity of braking your car in order to play the game with your muscle memory, which as you can see actually lives in the brain.

So just remember that you are a massive collection of parallel processes many of which have nothing to do with one another and cut someone a break when they haven't trained with a particular controller.

This is why.

When someone is playing an Xbox game and asks me "How do I jump?" my response is usually "Press B. ...And by 'B', I mean 'A'."

I also refer to the buttons on a Playstation controller by their SNES equivalent, which confuses people to no end when I tell them to "Press B to jump. Oh, dammit. I mean, press... press the button that would be B. Nintendo B, I mean. You know, the jump button..."

I play piano too but looking at your hands while playing piano isn't a bad thing, at least IMO. A lot of piano zealots will say that you shouldn't ever look at your hands. Personally I think that's dumb, and I spend about 50% of my time looking at my hands and the rest looking at the music. I'm actually just glancing back and forth.

I have a similar expression when I see someone look at the transmission when changing gears, primarily reverse to drive, in an automatic (looking at the shifter in a manual is a full-on slappable offense).

Except when there's a QTE in a game. My mind instantly blanks once those pop up. There are tons of monsters in the GoW games that I end up just beating to death because I fuck up the execution QTEs so much.

I do that same face when someone tells me a controller is better than a keyboard.

[–]CAW4 59 points60 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I play on both 360 and PC. There are definately times when a controller is better, mostly in driving games, as well as in games more focused on movement (Mirror's Edge, Assassin's Creed). I know PC circlejerks are great for karma on /r/gaming, but don't just make stuff up.

[–]phemice123 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with driving games, and Assassin's Creed, but pretty much anything first person I prefer my mouse/keyboard

[–]CAW4 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm more mixed. I started off playing on console, so I have 9 years experience with it, compared to barely 1 year on PC, plus my PC isn't too good, and most of my friends play 360, so while I do agree that Mouse/Keyboard is better, I've never really had an issue with either, outside of driving in Mafia 2 on PC >_<

Though, going back to the OP, I still have to do this for the numbers while playing PC, but outside of that everything's just muscle memory.

[–]firesash 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Having grown up playing about half and half, I've never played a driving game on the PC, and I don't think I would want to. Having to play first person shooters with a controller makes me rage though. I can't even subject myself to it unless there's a bunch of people playing in the same room(I wonder how long before local multiplayer is gone completely?). But if I did want to play a driving game on the PC, I would just use a 360 controller with the PC, and there are driving setups too, which I hear are unbelievably better with a little practice.

On a related note, I've played Mass Effect on both PC and 360, and driving the Mako is WAY easier on the 360 because of the control the thumbsticks provide.

I completely agree. One thing I noticed is that any 2d platformer, I LOVE controllers for. Old Castlevania games, metroid, and various other platformers. Hell, I even hook up a controller for Maplestory sometimes.

[–]Iggyhopper 1 point2 points ago

Great for games where you need things between zero and max. FPS games don't matter, you always want max speed. Racing games matter, you don't want to perform sudden sharp turns.

[–]Wyndikan 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

PC gamer here who used xbox controller on PC for first Assassin's Creed. Bought the subsequent titles for Xbox instead just cause I didn't want to wait for the PC version especially if I was just gonna play with a controller anyway. I play third person games (like DMC or something; except like mass effect and dragon age), racing, fighting, rpg, arcade games with a controller. FPS, RTS, MMO, simulation with keyboard and mouse. I think for me it really comes down to camera placement. I think mid-range camera placement feels better with a controller. But something up close or very far back is better with keyboard and mouse.

[–]angel14995 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. Anything that would require you to be able to run/move in a non-cardinal direction is much simpler on some sort of controller than the PC. That is, unless someone has developed a way to move in 9+ directions on the keyboard.

I consider myself a patient guy, and I enjoy playing games with people who are less skilled than myself because I can usually make it fun for both of us. However, there's a certain level of incompetence that becomes difficult to bear after a short while, and a key indicator of this fundamental lack of skill is the "looking at the controller before they press a button" tell.

I recently watched a friend play Resident Evil on the Gamecube for the first time. This person owns a PS2 and has played games like the Playstation Final Fantasy games and isn't exactly a stranger to video games in general. To watch her struggle to even meet the first zombie in the game for a solid half-hour was painful. Despite my most helpful advice, she barely managed to escape the first zombie and died to the second one.

Aaaaaaaa.

I still have to look at the Xbox controller constantly when I'm playing it at a friend's house.

Why did Microsoft decide it was OK to steal the SNES/DS buttons from Nintendo but change the layout of them? I still play with my SNES and DS so any time I touch an Xbox controller, I go full retard when it tells me what buttons to press. My friends know this now, so they'll say "Press square and circle!" etc because I know what buttons they are.

[–]SkyHawkMkIV 0 points1 point ago

That's a little too broad for my liking. The very first time I play any console, it takes a game or two for my muscle memory to get used to the control setup. If an experienced player does this, your "reaction" is appropriate. However, this is not conveyed.

[–]oicup 0 points1 point ago

Ok, maybe I'm getting old, but the xBox 360 controller has two analog sticks, a D-pad, two pressure sensitive triggers, four primary action buttons, three secondary buttons in the middle...and oh, aren't the analog sticks buttons themselves?

Yeah, because "pressing B to jump" means absolutely nothing to me until I learn that muscle memory. How dare a person not know the exact function within that game out of 11 buttons, two sticks, and a d-pad. What an ass indeed.

[–]NuclearWookie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, even though I've played many playstation games it was always my least favorite console since the button labeling makes no sense to me. Whenever I played a game with quick action mechanics I'd always fuck it up because I have no intuitive idea of what where the fuck the triangle or square buttons are.
