I am pretty sure Hawking is smiling in the second picture, so that's what I'm going to believe. It makes it even more excellent.

[–]innervision 4 points5 points ago

It was really awkward, so nothing to be 'jelly' about. We were in an elevator at the local 'mall' and I was like "OMFG Stephen Hawkins! What should I do?", and what I did was respect his privacy and just let the guy be.

Doesn't make for a great reddit story :(

[–]innervision 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, if it's any consolation, it wasn't a mall at the time. It's a department store called 'John Lewis' and he was going there for a coffee (I saw him later when I went for a coffee myself.)

But, what could I tell the guy? "Hey, I have read your book Universe in a Nutshell and it blew my tiny little mind"? Or maybe the cliched 'I admire your work'. Or 'can I take a picture with you?' (I had my camera in my pocket, and the wife was game.)

[–]Scandie 0 points1 point ago

I'm still jealous. That's more than I'll ever have. Of course, my friends aren't very smart so even if I had ever met Stephen Hawkins, most of them wouldn't know who he was. Le sigh.

[–]TheRedComet 2 points3 points ago

[–]bobbybusche 46 points47 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you loved Jim Carrey you'd understand that his Emma Stone video was his sense of humor and a joke.. As for the anti-vaccination nonsense, whatever he does outside of his acting I personally dont care. He is an entertainer, not a candidate for some election.

[–][deleted] 59 points60 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yet the anti-vaccine movement literally kills children senselessly.

"He's a great actor. If he supports killing children outside of his acting, I personally don't care."

That doesn't sound so clever now, does it?

[–]this_is_weird 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What he means is judging the art and the artist separately. If it turned out that Shakespeare was a serial rapist, it wouldn't make his play any less good. It now turns out Carrey believes in dangerous anti-vaccination nonsense, but it doesn't change his acting.

[–]wobblyIA 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know, I felt that way for many years. And I still agree that certain public figures, especially in the long view, should be judged apart from their personal failings (e.g. Heidegger--brilliant philosopher, held some problematic Nazi-friendly sentiments).

But--and maybe this is me getting old here--when the public figure in question is someone young kids admire and emulate, such as a goofy comic actor or popular musician, then we do a civic duty by shunning that figure.

Chris Brown makes high school guys aware that it's OK to hit your girlfriend, that people will still think you're cool and you'll still be professionally successful, even if everyone finds out that you're an abusive spouse.

Jim Carrey makes young kids (and credulous parents) think it's beneficial to not vaccinate, which does in fact literally kill kids.

[–]this_is_weird 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, in a sense, what you're saying here is were should pretend to dislike the art for the sake of children. This still acknowledges that the art is, perhaps in secret, to be judged on its own.

Basically, you are talking about pedagogy when we are talking about judging value of things and people (axiology). They're just two different business.

Most rational viewpoints brake down as soon as we start considering the children. We should just accept that most things that are rational should not be vetoed by the "think of the children" argument.

Because whatever kids may think, it still remains that the art and the artist have to be judged separately.

I remember this German book "The Reader". Not a great book by any mean, but I remember this scene where a character talks about how philosophy gave up considering the children and abandonned them to pedagogy, and he was sad about it. It's harsh sometimes, but we simply don't know of a way to consider the world honnestly and truthfully while giving an optimal envirronment to children. And yet, truth keeps calling and we won't stop for a child.

[–]AnarchPatriarch 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's not saying "don't enjoy the artist's art because the artist is bad," he's saying "don't blindly support the artist's personal life if the artist is bad." If you "just enjoy the art," chances are you'll be inclined to like the artist as a person, inspiration, role model, whatever. Just don't forget how dirty the hand that feeds you is.

[–]this_is_weird 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think this is literally what what I said means: "judging the art and the artist separately". It means both: a bad person can make good art, and good art does not make you a good person.

I'm for judging artists' work without regard for their private life for the same reason I'm against judging less severely the crimes commited by talented people.

[–]wobblyIA 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is feeling circular, but I'll add that yes--"think of the children" is generally symptomatic of a logical flaw somewhere in the argument, and I acknowledge that one can like a Chris Brown song without liking Chris Brown as a person. That seems undeniable.

But I'm not arguing "change your subjective experience!" I'm arguing that giving Carrey and Brown platforms for their nonsense is not justified by their unoffensive artistic merits. In the case of Brown, continuing to buy his albums and attend his concerts seems to be contributing to the "girlfriend-beating" platform. If actors and pop stars lived in cultural vacuums, merely producing art, this wouldn't be an issue. But they're entertainers, as committed to furthering a public image as to creating the art itself.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You'd have to be pretty stupid to blindly follow Jim Carrey's beliefs after watching a video.

[–]Glompers 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel the same way about Orson Scott Card. The man's a virulently homophobic nut, but the Ender saga is quite possibly one of the best series I've ever read.

I can't stand the fact that some people refuse to read the series because of OSC, even though his stuff is fantastic art that should be enjoyed by everyone.

As an afterthought, I have to add that Songmaster had some pretty crazy homoerotic shit.

[–]BipolarRedditor 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's a public figure. What he support and what he advocate affect a lot of people. And eventually lead to death. If we continue to support him, it will indirectly give him a false impression that we condone his action on anti-vaccine campaigns. And use his money generated from his career (which you love, and contributed) to continue his nonsense.

Btw, since he's a good friend with Hawking, why is he so dumb?

[–]frogma -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suppose we can't support Hawking either, since he's also indirectly supporting Jim Carrey by being a good friend of his? Or is that somehow different when you rationalize it?

[–]Legends_Never_Die 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, Chris Brown is in the clear?

[–]_beeks 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Basically, yeah. He's a scumbag but if I liked one of his singles before he beat Rhianna I'm not going to suddenly hate the song. Regardless of how obsessed with celebrity culture we are, the art and the artist are still two separate things.

[–]fwaggle 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was all set to disagree with bobbybusche, this_is_weird and you, but between the three of you you make a convincing argument. I felt the same way as FoldNZ did, every time I see Jim Carrey now I think of all the idiotic shit he's said about vaccinations.

But you guys are right, it doesn't really change how funny his movies are or anything like that, and the fact that this country even gives a shit what movie stars and pinup girls think about medical matters is indicative of a larger social problem, not an issue with their particular talents.

Upvotes for everyone for making me think.

[–]Legends_Never_Die 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess. I have different views on it. I have chosen to despise anything Chris Brown does on moral grounds. I find his "apology/redemption" of crying crocodile tears in front of a multitude of adoring fans completely inadequate.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My point wasn't about necessarily discounting the art because the artist is a scumbag, it was more that it's a morally bankrupt thing to do to say "I don't care if he's involved in the murder of children."

Also, since at least some people seem incapable of making the distinction between art and artist, I think that point is worth making.

[–]this_is_weird 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah of course, if we are to judge art and artist separately, we cannot forgive them a crime jsut because they are a great artist. It goes both ways.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not sure if in agreement....

[–]bobrocks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have trouble separating the two, myself. I find it hard to support Roman Polanski because giving him money so he can continue to avoid justice seems wrong to me.

[–]this_is_weird 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As I replied to someone else in this tree, What I said should go both ways: artists shouldn't evade justice just because they are talented either.

[–]bobrocks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess the main problem I have with it is the commercialization of art. Art is a business and to legally enjoy it, the artist must be compensated. It is easier to appreciate art from a period of time that has long since passed without having icky feelings. The second I begin putting money into someone's pocket who is doing something I feel that I cannot knowingly support is when I find myself having to group the art and the artist.

[–]battlemetal 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's shit like this that ruins the world. You've turned 'I am against vaccination' to 'I support killing children'

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Demonstrate the difference.

[–]RimePendragon -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's the difference ?

[–]battlemetal 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The difference is "I'm against vaccination" and "I support killing children"

[–]Blackplatypus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I suppose that "I support killing children" makes it sound like one supports actively going out and murdering children whereas "I'm against vaccination" is really more of a passive killing of children so I suppose there's that difference.

Also "I'm against vaccination" expressed a support for killing grown adults too so that's different from killing just children.

My point is: You see how I answered his question instead of tossing out a meaningless tautology?

So, just to be clear; which of those differences are the reason you're objecting to equating the two sentences? Are you mad because "I support killing children" makes it sound like anti-vaccers are being more active than they are about murdering children? Or are you mad because "I support killing children" doesn't adequately address the anti-vaccers desire to kill more than just children?

[–]battlemetal 0 points1 point ago

I love when people make up quotes for what another person said, entirely not quoting them at all. Added bonus when the quote is used to prove a point, when it's not even a real quote.

In direct response to what was quoted: Only children should make such ridiculous assumptions based off of so little. That's only because they view the world in a much more black and white way than adults.

[–]endo 0 points1 point ago

You must be fun at parties.

Do you also judge music based on what the drummer drinks: Stella or Guiness?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't suggest at all that I judge his movies based on his child murder. I only pointed out that it's not a nice thing to say that one person doesn't care about his child murder. I still love Ace Ventura. It's somewhat tarnished in my mind by thinking about the child murder, but it's still in and of itself a great movie.

I think you missed my point entirely.

[–]endo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, you have no point. You are trying desperately to make people care about an issue you have augmented and pushed and pulled into some semblance of "murder". Do car dealers "murder" their clients when they encourage them to buy fast cars and drive them fast? No, and neither did Jim Carrey or that idiot Jenny Mccarthy "murder" anyone, they gave foolish parents advice they believed in. Now, we can see that the evidence they believed in is almost definitely based on bad science (mercury in older vaccines) but they honestly thought they were helping. I'm sure you have beliefs that when applied to others, may result in bad things. Would we blame you when people tried to emulate you?

Hindsight is 20/20 and people are in charge of being as ill-informed as they want to be. You know what we call those people? Parents.

[–]shutyourgob 0 points1 point ago

Misguidedly supporting a movement that he once believed could save children's lives is somewhat different from supporting 'killing children' you fucking imbecile.

[–]Nrksbullet 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The insult notwithstanding, I see your point, and it is a good one. Its not like he believes it is killing children, there for he doesnt support killing children. That would be like saying me buying shoes means I support child labor.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If he's going to publically espouse something as recklessly, insanely dangerous as the anti-vaccine movement, and he's in a position where some people will listen to him, is it not his responsibility to make sure he's right? Should he not be held responsible?

[–]beatles910 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the anti-vaccine movement literally kills children senselessly.

Think about what you said for a moment. Not getting vaccinated doesn't literally kill you at all.

I'm going to assume that you forgot about the fact that everything that lives also dies.

[–]Blackplatypus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But not everything that lives dies from measles. Seems to me that anti vaccers want the number of things that do die from measles a little higher.

Not getting vaccinated doesn't literally kill you

Driving drunk doesn't literally kill you either. It doesn't mean you're not putting yourself and, more importantly, others at risk.

[–]beatles910 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except, being drunk isn't natural, it's an artificially created state. Not being vaccinated is more natural than being vaccinated, and thus they aren't hardly comparable.

[–]Blackplatypus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, that's fallacious.

What the fuck relevance is how "natural" something is? Chemotherapy is also less natural than dieing from cancer. How can I not determine which is the more responsible decision?

[–]beatles910 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wait, you are ok with "the anti-vaccine movement literally kills children" but not ok with saying being drunk isn't natural? It's the virus that literally kills them. The lack of vaccine just allowed the virus to do it.

[–]Blackplatypus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's the virus that literally kills them. The lack of vaccine just allowed the virus to do it.

Sure, just like it's the car crash that literally kills them. The being drunk just allows it to happen.

[–]beatles910 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suppose, but drunk driving kills other innocent people and not getting vaccinated just kills the person that didn't get vaccinated.

It seem more like the choice to wear a seat belt or not.

Well the thing with being anti-vaccine is that you can be against some and for others. Honestly I would just compare the probability of something going wrong with the vaccine to the probably of getting the disease and having damage from that.

Of course if you don't get your child vaccinated you sure as hell better keep them and their immune system healthy.

Yeah all the fun sort of left Jim Carrey for me when he decided to start killing children by scaring soccer moms with lies about vaccination.

Jim Carrey is a major proponent of anti-vaccine bullshit. He and his douchebag wife's advocacy of pseudo-science has led to many, many preventable deaths.

To me, this is the same as my view on religion. A priest is the proponent of a lifestyle which i believe leads to individuals wasting their time, hard earned money and their life toward a pointless and wholy made up cause. But i wouldn't say this makes the priest a bad person. Jim Carrey has come to the wrong conclusions and is direly misinformed, but this doesn't make him a bad person.

[–]Sadclowndoesfrown 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suppose what complicates it, is when does it stop being his fault? If he believes that he is doing good and helping children, and with the information he has found he has come to that conclusion earnestly, then does the fact that he is incorrect make him a bad person?

[–]crocoduck_hunter 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Life is too complicated to call someone like that a "bad person."

He may have "come to that conclusion earnestly," but he also came to it irresponsibly. No genuinely skeptical survey of the evidence could possibly produce the view that vaccines cause autism, that is probably the most thoroughly-debunked claim in all of medical history.

So he actively campaigns for irresponsibly-reached conclusions that have already produced a fairly serious public health nightmare, and will probably contribute to many more children dying as herd immunity evaporates. Maybe he's not a bad person, but that sure as hell colors my opinion of him.

[Edited to add:] When it comes to religion, it's harder to see where the actual harm is in many cases. But I still think we can hold people accountable to their intellectual conclusions, based on how carefully and responsibly they came to them.

[–]Reluctant_swimmer -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah yes, children die because of Jim Carrey's personal opinions.

can someone explain to me the whole vaccine issue? explain it like im five please!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Vaccinations are some kind of gubmint plot to make everyone sick. They kill more people than they save. They're manufactured by illuminati's indentured underage alien slaves and contain nanobots that give the Bilderberg group total control of everyone who's been vaccinated. And so forth.

That's basically one side's opinion. The other side's opinion is that the anti-vaccine lunatics are really fucking stupid. People get sick from vaccines some times. People die without them. Maybe some vaccines might kill one out of 1 000 000 recipients. But not having vaccines might annihilate the human race.

[–]MoXria 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought this was the case but I thought no one could be that ignorant of the benefits of vaccines... Then I realise my favourite of all time actor is against it? aparently so is bill maher?ಠ_ಠ -_-

[–]FiendishBeastie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then there's the whole "vaccines cause autism" bollocks that is being paraded around, due entirely to a single 1998 study which has since been discredited. Thanks a lot anti-vaxxers - kids in Australia have died from entirely preventable diseases (such as whooping cough, recently) because of your ignorance and stupidity.

Anti-Vax groups such as the deceptively-named Australian Vaccination Network use such discredited studies and circumstantial anecdotes to convince people not to vaccinate their children, and instead trust their health to homeopathy and other such nonsense.

I wonder if the subject ever came up between Carrey and Hawking. Surely Hawking would have the knowledge to tell him.

I wonder if they just settled in a "let's not ruin our friendship over that and jsut not talk about it", arrangement.

[–]FuriousJ -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I sure am too lazy to read that. But I'm anti-vaccination myself. It lowers your immune system and there's way too many people on the planet anyway.

[–]garymrush 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe you should take the time to read it then. Vaccines improve your immune system by giving it harmless examples of viruses to watch out for. If you think more children should die, maybe we could find a more humane way than whooping cough.

[–]FuriousJ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now, a friend of mine (I guess I don't remember how reliable this friend was) explained it to me as vaccinations force mutations of the virus. While not vaccinating allows a population to move towards true immunity. It made sense to me. I guess if I didn't have health insurance it would be one thing. But for me, I've only done the vaccinations necessary for my progressions through school.

[–]Arvald 3 points4 points ago

there is a reason things like polio is virtually non existent in industrialized country's, and its not because "not vaccinating allows a population to move towards true immunity"

[–]knitwise 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. No. Just no. That is not how it works. At all.

[–]thetheist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the salient point is that vaccines work with your body to create antibodies, which, unlike say, antibiotics, is not something that there are a limited number of. A virus that mutated will often be mitigated by the vaccine or will act the same as a virus that had no vaccine, so it is quite difficult to say that your body would be better off without the vaccine.

Also, mutations occur at a natural rate based on the type of virus, not upon being "forced". That means that a more widespread virus will have more mutations, so if a particularly "bad" mutation were to pop up, it would be exponentially more likely in the case that the population wasn't vaccinated.

[–]FuriousJ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I read a bunch of these comments and everyone is entitled to their own opinion...but I just can't believe how many of you are hating on Jim or Stephen. Second, a few of you mentioned negatively how Jim is opposed to vaccines. He just wants to "green the vaccines". Whether or not you want to believe that means anti-vaccine or pro-safe vaccine is up to you. But he knew a child (Jenny McCarthy's) that was diagnosed with autism that was a result of a vaccine. It doesn't make Jim stupid for wanting something healthier and safer. And scientific beliefs doesn't make Stephen Hawkins stupid or wrong either.

[–]knitwise 7 points8 points ago
