I could have sworn this was two separate pictures. It's just unreal.

At first glance, I thought to myself "I don't see how a boat and then a random picture of a resort could make any sort of meaningful comic." Turns out it wasn't a comic at all.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I spent a good 20 seconds trying to figure out if those buildings were made out of scrap from the boat or something... the I realized it was all one picture. Silly brain.

[–]elephantpoop 17 points18 points ago

I thought the grass area was where the boat used to be but that didnt make any sense either.

It's called focal compression or compression distortion. It happens when you shoot with a longer focal length. Basically, the longer the lens, the closer the background is to the foreground.

no its not, its a real photo. Its the Pasha Bulker which ran aground on Nobby's beach after a huge storm in Newcastle, Australia about 5 years ago!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago*

What amazes me is that it's all in focus. Lenses with long focal length suffer from a narrow depth of field. The photographer must have used a very small aperture.

[–]Parzee 25 points26 points ago

The angle of this shot is so bizarre that it really does look shopped.
(So much so, in fact, that I had to check your link and research it.) And, sure enough, it really did happen. Thanks for the info..

[–]h0ll0w 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's the white line near the shore that gives the impression of two pictures being placed above each other, especially because both halves are the same size. Weird.

[–]Qcto 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, I thought it was two different pictures. Then I said to my self, "wut."

[–]KorayA 2 points3 points ago

For the longest time I'm thinking.. okay now what's interesting about the second picture?

[–]attomsk 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, it appears this was taken zoomed in, which can really flatten an image and create confusing scale differences between foreground and background

[–]shazbaz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I thought it was weird too, like the bow is bent.. so I had to research it..

[–]lotophage77 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Using a zoom lens flattens perspective, making the background appear closer to the foreground. It's not shopped, but you could arguably call is an in camera effect.

Lots, it got pulled off the beach after numerous attempts. Company that owned the ship got into shit for running aground.

[–]antonbe 1 point2 points ago

I can't imagine pulling a thing like that out of sand, man. I feel bad for the captain.

[–]AndTruthishly 0 points1 point ago

For sure, I have a certain amount of sympathy for the "Oh.my.fuck. We screwed up boys." moment he would have went through when he realised his ship would need wheels to effectively beachcomb.

I live in Newcastle and my car floated away in the storm that caused this. :(

[–]bedintruder 0 points1 point ago

I figured it had to either be fake or due to a massive storm. Then I saw the big hole in the roof of the building and figured it had to have been a bad storm.

[–]ShustOne 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This must have been taken with a telephoto lens. When zoomed in enough it will give the photo a flat look, which is why the ship seems so out of place.

That's amazing. Those ships are freakin huge. I would like to tag along on a freighter/container ship someday but fear of heights+fear of drowning would be a simultaneous issue. Anyway, it's relatively cheap to take a container ship / freighter cruise if you want to see the world, and you have the time, cash and can deal with the fear of tripping and falling over the railing and plunging into the icy waves and being eaten by sharks/getting ground up by the propellor.

the best part about the pasha bulker story was when they started to pull it back out to sea. one night at high tide they got all the tugs in the area to start pulling at it, but it was stuck pretty good, and a bunch of the ropes snapped.

Meanwhile, in trash-journalism-land, the spice girls were touring the country (or about to), so naturally they earned the prized position of front-page photo on the free newspaper given out on public transport in the afternoons.

This paper had a habit of putting an awesome picture right next to an unrelated headline and story, to try to get 2 types of reader engaged immediately. This day was awesome:

{Picture of the Spice Girls}

NOT ENOUGH ROPE

{Pasha Bulker Story}

[–]ohhyou 1 point2 points ago

THIS IS REAL!

this happened where i am from in newcastle australia. it was very real. it happened in june 2007. crazy floods and wild storms. the pasha bulker emptied it ballasts when it wasnt supposed to and ended up floating and getting stuck on nobbys beach.

look it up.

[–]VictorNightingale 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This was photographed with a long lens.Extreme telephoto compression makes near and far objects appear closer to or on the same plane. It's the direct opposite effect of a wide angle lens which emphasizes distance between near and far objects.

Also, dat's a big boat.

[–]MsAnnThrope -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]VictorNightingale 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup.

I'm not denying the ship's run aground and it's really close. That's obvious.

Telephoto compression is responsible for making it look like the ship is sitting on top of the building, and for making the building look like it's sitting on top of the palm trees in the foreground.

Aside from the size of the ship and how close this is to the shore, another reason why people think it's photoshopped is because the distortion makes the scene appear unnatural. Our eyes don't see like this. The image lacks the depth that we would perceive in person from that same point of view.

[–]MsAnnThrope 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Gotcha. I actually took photography for a few years in school. I just assumed (which I shouldn't have done) that you were saying the ship wasn't grounded, that it just looked that way because it was photographed with a long lens.

My apologies, and thank you for the explanation.

[–]VictorNightingale 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No problemo. The photographer who shot this knew exactly how to execute the image to get maximum response from the viewer.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The lack of scale references in the water also plays tricks on the viewer, so if you were there, it would really look something like this, but then you'd take a picture with your shitty point and shoot and it would look nothing like you remember.
