Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Evolution is a lie. All game controllers were created on the same day.

Yeah it can't be true. Consoles have only existed for five years.

Yeah, playing air controller is way better than having a giant mech cockpit in your living room. I'm glad Microsoft is here to usher us into the future of entertainment technology.

We went back and forth on adding the SNES Mouse, but left it off because it's essentially a PC peripheral adapted for a console. If we added that we'd have to include all the keyboards that were out there in the 80s when consoles were branded as home computers. In a future version we might just do that, but for this one it would have opened the floodgates to like 25 more peripherals.

[–]OmegaVesko 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably because it didn't actually evolve from a videogame controller, but from a PC peripheral.

There's one for sale at a local store that sells old games. Dunno what they are asking for it, but I believe they had it grouped with Mario Paint.

Boy what was that guys problem. Nintendo actually does experiment far more than any other console company out there right now. It's a huge risk, but for Nintendo it has paid off recently.

[–]danny841 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some people think Nintendo has ushered in a revolution within console gaming by taking a leap that could have doomed the company to poor sales. They think that the motion controller is a new and important way to play games.

Others think they put a gyroscope in a (then) 5 year old console and found a way to market cheap gaming in an attempt to make a quick buck. They say that Nintendo is behaving like most big corporations in that they gained a huge market share years back and are coasting on brand loyalty.

[–]measuredinyears 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sometimes it has paid off recently. They tried to do a lot with the 3DS and it didn't do too well, remember!

[–]DrSmoke 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nintendo has been trying to make 'motion based controllers' work since the powerglove. Most of those experiments were failures, but I'm glad they keep trying.

[–]breakchair 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This occurred to us, too. We decided not to connect the Wii U to the Dreamcast because the Wii U has a touchscreen, which is way different from the tiny little screen the Dreamcast had. However, it does look weird to have the Wii U hanging out on its own, and at some point we might revise this to include handhelds so we could show the DS and iPhone/iPod leading to the Wii U. As well as showing the origins of the D-Pad on the Microvision and Game & Watch.

[–]THLycanthrope 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This jpg brought to you by Nintendo. "No Wii U isn't just a huge DS/ Sega GameGear. It's an interface device unlike any you've ever seen before."

[–]tairygreene 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wii U can still be unique while being inspired by the dreamcast controller.

[–]darzu 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How are the two connected? Not trying to challenge you, just honestly curious.

[–]darkbrethren 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Dreamcast was the first (and as far as I know, only) system to place a screen on the controller before the WiiU.

I know this isn't an exhaustive list, but they're missing some music-game essentials à la Beatmania and Pop 'n Music. And why isn't DDR listed in that ancestry line?

[–]Stregano 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I came in here to post exactly this. So many rhythm games were skipped.

There are even offshoots of offshoots, like going from Beatmania to DJ Hero. Or guitar freaks to guitar hero.

[–]GrowingSoul 2 points3 points ago

the instrument games should have been linked with the DDR pad. And yeah, there were a lot of Bemani peripherals missing here.

[–]Slashbackred 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The worst of all was probably the first Xbox controller... big spaceship with bad buttons layout.

[–]rjcarr 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everyone complains about the size of the duke, but it wasn't the size for me (and I have normal to small hands), it was the tiny oval buttons. They were awkwardly placed, at a bad angle, and so pointy they hurt to hold down. And you had to have ridiculously long thumbs to reach the b/w buttons.

Hard to believe it made it out of the testing phase.

[–]toddgak 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My friends and I LOVED that original Xbox controller. Nothing quite like holding that man sized donkey cock of a controller to pwn each other at Halo. In fact, I had 3 donkey cock controllers and 1 small controller and as I recall, we nick named it 'the jew' because if you had to use it you got jew'd.

I think the button placement was perfect. The white and back buttons were put a little higher up so you didn't hit them by accident. The shape of the coloured buttons were diamond like and more effective. The controller molded to your hand very nicely and the triggers had nice springy throttles for racing games. The analog sticks were taller and narrower for better precision. I guess for people with girly woman hands it was a lousy controller, but I wish they still had for the 360.

[–]BobisOnlyBob 8 points9 points ago

This is basically a prettied-up version of Sock Master's Controller Family Tree, albeit with non-conventional controllers.

I feel that there should be at least some link between the Dreamcast and Wii U controller.

[–]ooo_shiny 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I came here to mention that. The Wii U controller definitely should've been shown as an evolution of the Visual Memory Unit from the Dreamcast controller.

The Wii U: Forever Alone :(

[–]antipode 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the best way to link up the Wii U controller would be to put a 3DS on there with a line leading to the Expansion Slide Pad, and then have lines connecting from that and from the 3DS down to the Wii U controller. The 3DS isn't a controller though, so I can see why they wouldn't. Maybe even add a line from the Dreamcast controller.

Ok so I had a Sega Activator. Funny story, it was the shittiest thing ever.

What it felt like was total flailing, and you really needed to play with it in a completely dark room. How do you play mortal combat with this fucking thing? It felt like you were playing whack a mole, where you also get to kick the mole (why it's so much fucking quicker to punch it!) and sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

Because the mouse and keyboard were not designed with the specific objective of controlling video games? they're not game controlling devices per se.

Seeing that wonder wizard thing at the top reminded me of my first game system. I have never been able to find another or any information about it. Maybe reddit can help.

I remember it having 2 or 3 block breaking games and a basketball type game. It was a wooden box that plugged into the TV. There was a big knob in the middle of the box for moving the paddle, a reset button, and a switch to select the game type.

Anyone else remember this thing? It was late 70's early 80's. I cried when it stopped working and my dad threw it out.

[–]zzt711 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Great graphical representation! Pretty damn thorough, but seems to be missing a few.

I noticed the the NES Arkanoid Controller (paddle) is missing, the Dreamcast Fishing controller and Namco's NegCon/JogCon. A number of music controllers seem to be absent also. Also the 2600 also had it's own trackball long before the 5200 (Wico and the Pro-Line controller - I had them).

edit: Yeah there's a lack of PC peripherals, but I'm pretty sure those were left out on purpose. It should have it's own.

The Atari XEGS joystick, was that actually unique in it's own right from the standard 2600 joystick? I always thought it was just a recolored 2600 joystick (not actually redesigned/worthy of being there).

no mouse. no keyboard. your chart is broken.

[–]ElectricCube 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because mice and keyboards weren't designed with any specific objectives of controlling computer games. They are more than just game controllers are are used across multiple different types of systems.

So many gaps in this record. I'll believe it when I see it happen in person.

[–]left4tacos 1 point2 points ago

Why a keyboard and mouse are not in here is beyond me....

[–]rjcarr 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe because there's no evolution? Unless you want to get into mouse tracking technologies. Then maybe you want to get into keyboard click technologies too?

Point is, a gamepad is meant to play games and a keyboard+mouse is a general input device.

[–]left4tacos 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

buts its still a controller. the first mouse and keyboards are completely different from the high end gaming ones today. 10 years ago could you check your CPU heat, ram you're using, and have a clock just on the keyboard? NO. just like the older controllers compared to today.

[–]thecross 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So why can't I play against COD players on their gamepads with my "general input device" keyboard and mouse?

I can't tell what the hell is going on in this photo. All I see are a shit load of video game remotes.

Considering the thumbnail, I thought this was going to be a picture of every controller broken... Evolution via 12 year olds.

When I worked at Toys R Us, they had a sale on their old Nintendo controllers. I bought 2 NES Advantages for $3.99 a piece. It was amazing and I still have them to this day.

They left off the Coleco Telstar Arcade. Dates from 1977 and had both a light gun and a steering wheel with shifter. The artist obviously has NES bias.

Appears to only be 1st party stuff so no:

Namco NegCon: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2164/2380593438_9afe470195.jpg

(Not quite clear in the picture, but it twisted in the middle for steering in racing games.)

Capcom's "Steel Battalion" controller. Only two games ever used it though and one of them was packed in with the controller:

This kinda reminded me of the evolutionary lines of early hominids. I was actually sad that the Power Glove was an evolutionary dead end.

I'm sorry, without TAC2 this chart is far from complete.

MS Sidewinder deserves a mention as well...

It feels a bit too angled towards consoles; sorry.

Why do not game pads link to the wii mote (functions as one when turned on it's side). Also, the iPhone/iPad should be linking into the Wii U - or at the VERY least the DS - I know those are both systems, but they are DIRECT influences on what the Wii U is.

Yesterday I went to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and they currently have a history of video games exhibit. We spent hours in there playing a lot of these controllers. Haha. Anyone in the Portland area should go check it out! I think the exhibit ends this month.

I like this except for the fact that the PS3 controller is shown as being more evolved than the XBOX 360, when clearly the XBOX controller is superior.

That "Evolution" is wrong am pretty sure the Xbox Controller was designed after the old Wing back from '95 '93 if am not mistaken.

Awesome. I still have a working Odyssey 2! The controller for that system is interesting though...as some games had layouts that you'd place on the actual Odyssey and then the Odyssey keyboard would be used in conjunction with the controller for crazy fun times!

A game I had like that was Lord of the Rings. Nope...actually Quest for the Rings Not my picture. But yes I have that game! In case anyone want to come over and play it some time.

Hard to believe the famicom started its own lineage. It should at least be related to the Atari 2600 and likely others.
