This is part of Naoko Ito's exhibition called Urban Nature

I saw it in Raleigh, NC at the Contemporary Art Museum, and actually met her at the grand opening. The whole collection is really cool.

The CAM page on her exhibition

I placed a jar in Tennessee,

And round it was, upon a hill.

It made the slovenly wilderness

Surround that hill.

The wilderness rose up to it,

And sprawled around, no longer wild.

The jar was round upon the ground

And tall and of a port in air.

It took dominion every where.

The jar was gray and bare.

It did not give of bird or bush,

Like nothing else in Tennessee.

[–]bearfight 6 points7 points ago

This is by Wallace Stevens, by the way. I don't want anyone to think that I wrote it.

This is exactly what I was thinking. It took me a long time to understand this the first time I read it.

[–]bearfight 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, by the way. I'm glad I read that poem.

[–]bearfight 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's just a highfalutin way of describing the jar. He's more playing with meter and rhyme at that point in the poem than trying to be meaningful. Gives the final two lines a bit more oomph.

I don't often love art. But when I do, it's about nature and us humans ruining it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This piece of art could just as easily be about the idealization of nature that you're doing. Nature doesn't exist, it is just a human concept that we romanticize and think of as beautiful, etc.

[–]IAMA_monkey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you say nature doesn't exist then I might aswell just say art doesn't exist, no? That is your view of nature. Mine is nature = all living things (which seems to make a bit more sense doesn't it?). Do you think art is beautiful? Because it is special and takes a long time to conceive? Nature took WAY longer to conceive and I find it more special than any piece of art I have ever seen.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure nature exists. It isn't inherently beautiful though, and wasn't considered beautiful by western culture to the extent that it is now until very recently. I'm pretty sure the modern conception of nature began in with the romantics in the 1800s. My problem with our idea of nature, and what this piece of art may be trying to express, is the commoditization(probably not the right word) of nature. Going for hikes on the weekends on human made trails and thinking you're in touch with nature or experiencing nature's beauty isn't giving you the whole picture. Nature wants to kill you. This is the same as the romanticization of hunter-gatherer societies.

[–]IAMA_monkey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I completely agree with you and am aware of this fact. I am not one of those people who 'loves' nature because it's wonderfull in a 'sweet' way. Nature is horrendous and without mercy. Even ultimately for us humans it's each and every one for themselves, this I also realize.

And I think that in all this lies the beauty of nature. I feel that you are well educated in arts, I'm quite well educated in science and I think that for a big part this difference is responsible for what you and I find beautiful.

I never understood what people like or find beautiful about art and you may not understand what people find beautiful about nature or science (when I say nature I really do mean all laws of physics, chemistry and so on. Not just bees and flowers). Though if we would have switched educations this may have been the other way around.

I would love to truly appreciate art one day, if you have any 'introduction' to make this happen feel free to provide it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am actually a scientist, haha. I took a course in environmental history, which was just about how people perceive nature, and the implications of this. It was an awesome course, we covered things like the environmentalism of the nazis and the role of bacteria/animals/plants in the settlement of the US by the europeans.

As for appreciating art, I was not really into art for a long time. I've taken a decent amount of psychedelics, and that is opening me up more to it. It's still new for me though.

[–]IAMA_monkey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If anything, psychedelics have helped me to appreciate nature more, I guess it just really depends on the individual as for what we like.

Cool, yes. Art, meh.

Art as a collective word bums me the fuck out since I believe skill and execution is inseparable from art. I love looking at a piece of art and wondering things like "I wonder how long that guy took to paint that", or "I wonder what materials was used" or "did he actually see something or did he paint from memory". I know that what I am seeing here is art, but it kind of spoils it when I can say "Look, someone took pieces of a branch and jammed it into jars".

This reminds me a ring I've seen that was wood bound with metal. The explanation was that love is something organic, and marriage is an unnatural societal restraint that tries to contain love. The couple wore this because while they were in love, they would not have gotten married when they did if it wasn't for the need to be technically married in order to be together when they joined Green Peace. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about: http://www.wheretogetengaged.com/rules-of-engagement/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/woodinlayring.jpg

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know this will be an unpopular comment but I am starting to dislike things like this, where you are sort of lead to think "ahhh, that's clever". In my mind I can just see the artist standing next to me smugly saying, "yup, see what I did there".

Don't get me wrong, it's nice and everything but I guess I am just fatigued by all the, well, cleverness in modern art.

I think I am getting old, I am more often moved by an oil painting or abstract art these days. Art like this is simply just clever and well executed, but at the same time it is obvious and therefore a little empty.

Anyways, those are my thoughts - unpopular as they may be. </rant>

Edit I actually looked at her website and there are indeed some very nice more abstract things on there. I am not having a go at this particular artist in any way, just observations based on this piece.

You're just mad because you didn't think of it. Seriously though, there is a lot of art out there that "I could do" but it's only after someone else has already done it. It's not about whether or not you can do it, it's that you didn't.

[–]ObeseSnake 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not mad bro, just trying to figure out if they did that or grew it in the jars (cutting holes in the glass, replacing jars as things grew bigger, etc). Art snobs are funny sometimes.

[–]bhaller 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are, and I was more joking than anything . I used to live with an artist and it wasn't how she did what she did, it's how she came up with the ideas.

[–]AwHellNaw 2 points3 points ago

[–]reifier -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why does everyone keep using the word installation, isn't it just art? Why

[–]earlymorninghouse 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

installation is a medium, much the same way oil paint, charcoal, and wax is. Installation is a form of sculpture that generally fills a space, creates a new space, or in general is piece you experience in space.

I would be tempted to call this piece a sculpture however, considering it is rather small and easily walked around. If this were an entire room FILLED with this, definitely an installation.

edit: typo

[–]ebop 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, installation is art.

Beyond that, I would consider this piece sculpture as it is neither site specific nor immersive - the two general gauges to determine if something is installation art. I will confide in you that many people often conflate "difficult to install" with "installation." (Be wary, too, of eclectically curated works being called installation. While the term "installation" could apply in the broadest sense of the word, it is often to no great gain. If that painting on the floor resting against the wall gains no great significance in its location you would do well to be dubious.)

Think of it as an air conditioning unit, or maybe a satellite dish, yet its only use is to please/inspire/upset just by looking at it. See? It is art that is "installed", versus painted or sculpted. Or maybe it is in-a-stall. Who knows at this juncture?

Installations refer to three dimensional art. They are either installed temporarily or permanently. Usually they take into account the space they are placed and how a viewer can see it. This is different from the standard framed canvas style of art.

I'm not sure where old sculpture falls under this category as the term "installation art" only came about recently.

Maybe thats the environment they pictured it in. There are plenty of installations that are "just placed on the floor."

Now that is the type of art piece I'd actually buy (if I ever had the money).

It would most certainly not be easy to make. The sticks are each individually balanced on little clear blocks, lined up perfectly. It took many hours, I'm sure.

You're welcome to try. I think you'll run into a lot more issues than that, if you want one that looks that good.

In the back of art magazines you can send a photo to a company and very lightly they transfer the photo on canvass just enough to see the photo and colors values... almost like a paint by number set then they send it to you and tell you what a talented artist you will become using this technique... it works but really does not take talent.

I bet you people cant wait to be able to buy cheap "reproductions" of this photo underlay copy art with plastic frames at K mart.
