Too much HDR going on. HDR looks great (realistic) when used properly. I still have yet to master doing that though.

Actually the second one is better because it uses HDR for an artistic effect changing reality knowingly making an out of this world effect. The first one is a poor, failed attemt to use HDR for making a photo look more like reality.

      That photo is most likely not at all what it actually looked liked. I don't have the money to spend on quality filters to get fantastic shots like a pro would. So yes, I rely on somewhat on photoshop for post processing. Its not like people didn't manipulate the photos in development with physical film to achieve amazing photos either. They're just different techniques, and you can go overboard with too much processing anywhere.

        Yes, I live about 6 hours west in kelowna, so I make the trip a couple times a year!

        Moraine lake is by far my favorite place on my drive (I do the icefield parkway to jasper as well)

        So I take a lot of pictures!

        This photo looks processed from several exposures and blended together (HDR, but not obvious about it). By using multiple images with different settings, you can hang onto the color detail better in the highlight and shadow areas. He's surely tweaked the saturation and contrast as well, probably in different amounts across the image. Creating something like this takes quite a bit of skill and work. Nice job.

            Thanks for the link kliman. Moraine Lake is a place of many faces. I have visited there many times and the light is always different. The last time I visited there I took these:

            HDR is an artistic choice, as is the amount of rendering. I prefer the more natural, human eye look as in the posts above. I didn't use typical HDR techniques in these images as it tends to destroy image quality. I prefer manual blending so I can control details and contrast. I am going to experiment with HDR more in the future as there is amazing artistic potential. Where and when I apply it will likely be specific and deliberate. It's a tool, one of many. Cheers

            For those who are wondering, this really is a picture of Moraine Lake, in Banff Park in Canada, and I highly recommend going there. This is one of the better views in the park, but you get views almost as good pretty much anywhere you go there.

              Interesting story: A few summers ago I was contracted out by the Provincial Government to do a summer's worth of trail work out in Kananaskis. Because we were working at far too quick a pace and flying through the work the boss told us to slow it down and generally do about 3 hours worth of work per day but still clock in for the whole 8 hours. So I'd get up in the morning, drive out to Kananaskis, work for 3 hours, and call it quits. Then I'd grab an ice cream and spend the rest of the day with my work crew cruising around some of the most beautiful locations in the world and smiling at the bears and moose while getting paid to do it. There are worse jobs.

              Moraine Lake is a ways away from where we were working, but Kananaskis does a pretty good job if one wants similar scenery that's an hour closer to Calgary. My personal favourite spot is the Kananaskis Lakes. There's a car park between the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes where you can climb up some boulders and get a 360degree view of both lakes with the mountains in the background. I'm by no means a nature nut but this spot literally took my breath away and I could stay there for hours. Highly recommended. Also the same spot where a girl told me that she loved me right before she moved away for school and I never saw her again, but that's another story for another time.

              I knew it was Lake Moraine! It is located outside Lake Louise, Alberta! They have a hiking trail that goes from one end of the Lake to another and it is just absolutely stunning! One of my favorite spots in Canada.

              Here is a picture I took of it this summer. No photoshop magic either!
