          I used to have red hair (light brownish hair with a reddish beard now), and I have a light tan and no facial freckles. I still have arm freckles, though.

          People give my ginger wife all the credit for our red-headed daughters, but I am always quick to educate them that I used to have red hair. I had gotten in to so many fights as a kid due to my red hair (if I only had a nickel every time I heard "I'd rather be dead than red on the head" and "I'm going to beat you like a red-headed stepchild").

          Both my wife and I are thankful that our daughters are taking after me with respect to their complexions. They have darker skin than my wife and are showing signs of minimal frecklage.

          I grew up in the U.S. midwest in the 1980s and I was the only red-headed pupil at my gradeschool. I was different enough to warrant getting bullied, but I learned to fight at an early age so the bullying didn't last long.

          What is worse is that people assumed I knew every other red-head they ever met, as if we are all related. I swore I never would marry a red-headed woman because people would assume we'd be brother and sister instead of husband and wife, but I fell in love with a ginger anyways and now have two red-headed girls of my own.

          You have to understand, red-headed girls generally fared better than red-headed boys. They were seen as more exotic while red-headed boys were seen as weird outcasts. If I ever hear someone say, "Red on the head, fire in the hole" or "Red on the head, better in bed" about my daughters I will knock them unconscious, though. I don't know if people still use those sayings with regards to feisty red-headed women.

          Attitudes changed in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it seems. More people started dying their hair red and I received more compliments than ridicule.

          I think South Park's parody on the hate of gingers was all in good fun and was more reminiscent of the old days.

                                                    My wife is a ginger, and I am an ex-redhead. I was never quite ginger, as I always had a bit of a tan [and a soul]. In my late 20s my hair started turning darker and darker and now it is a light brown (my beard is still reddish, though).
