For all the people that will eventually call this a turtle: it is a tortoise.

Those bastards love them some green veggies. Some day I will have a tortoise because I just love watching them eat so much.

I had a big sulcatta tortoise, about 24 inches in length or so. He loved veggies. His favorite food was carrots and cabbage.

There used to be a really cool pet show in town years ago and the owner had one of those big monsters! His name was Tank. He used to get SO happy when he'd crunch carrots apart.

Pardon my ignorance, but how exactly do tortoises show their happiness?

Just because they have a beak doesn't mean they can't smile. I have birds... They can very much smile.

I have a tortoise and when friends are over and I realize I haven't given him his veggies yet that day that practically becomes a spectator sport. Tortoises eat food so awesome.

Well, technically, it is a turtle, as it is a Testudine, but I agree, I get annoyed as fuck when people can't make a distinction. Though the worst are people calling salamanders lizards (coughredditadcough)

[–]Margatron 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The common distinction in England is turtle=partial water, tortoise=land, terrapin=full water. But you're right, they're all Testudines with only two distinctions - ones that fold their necks and ones that accordian their necks.

Think of squares and rectangles. A tortoise is a turtle, but a turtle is not always a tortoise. On that note, a toad is a frog, but not all frogs are toads.

Tortoises are included in the Turtle family, and in French both are translated by the same word: "Tortue". So yeah, you can also say turtle.

Tortoises are part of the order Testudines, also known as the turtle order. So people can call it a tortoise or a turtle and be correct.

[–]TheZor -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to make this argument, but people just point to Wikipedia and say "tortoises are part of the turtle family, so they are technically turtles".

This is true, of course. But there's a reason we have different words for things... To tell them apart. This is so you can go into a pet store, ask for a tortoise, and get exactly what you want.

  1. W.T.F, man??? That was crazy

  2. That's a snapping turtle. Those bastards are just mean. Eff them. The turtle pictured above is actually a tortoise and they're insect omnivores.

[–]susanreneewa 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Anyone who feeds a live rodent to a captive reptile is a fucking asshole who just enjoys the suffering. There is absolutely no need. Humanely pre-killed mice and rats are the same price as live. And for anyone who says that it's just nature, remember this. In nature, both animals have a chance to escape. Many, many snakes and other reptiles have been killed by live prey and, on the other side, watching a small animal cowering in terror while it sees its death approaching is brutal.

I had a beautiful little tortoise just like this for a depressingly short time. My best friend was moving home to the motherland and couldn't take the little cutie with her. I ended up owning him/her/it 3 times longer than my friend, but I guess I didn't take good enough care of her. She refused to eat anything her vitamins were sprinkled on, and eventually I was just desperate to get food into her that I'd leave them off in the hopes that she'd eat her veggies. There were no reptile vets anywhere near me at the time, and I didn't even realise she was sick until it was too late.

To anyone with a tortoise! Apparently you can force feed them their vitamins with droppers, or even do eye drops to get them in that way (obviously a different type of vitamin, not a watery-powder solution!). I was/am still heartbroken over the little creature, I loved her to bits.

Make sure you get those vitamins in, and make sure they get plenty of UV light. If your tortoise seems lethargic or has a loss of appetite, they need help straight away. It took less than 2 weeks for a serious decline in Little Foot, and it's been 2 years and I'm still heartbroken.

[–]IggySorcha 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't feel like you failed due to not force feeding. Force feeding/drops/etc though sometimes necessary are extremely dangerous to do with turtles because it is easy to break their neck feeding them should they try to retract it.

[–]Siofsi 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks - I really didn't know what to do with her, and I hoped just feeding her good fresh food would help her on her way. I loved her very much and I wish I could have cared for her as much as she deserved, poor little thing.

Thanks for you kind words, and that's also good advice - killing a tortoise while trying to help it would be traumatizing!

[–]IggySorcha 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Reptiles are a pain because they're better than anyone at hiding they're sick. With the exception of egg crating on their shell, turtles are the best at hiding it.

[–]Margatron 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can attest to this. Once they start showing signs of lethargy and not eating, it's usually too late to help them. Always check that they have a pinky colour inside their mouth and that their skin colours aren't fading in their armpits.

My housmates had a tortoise... he was cool, but pretty stupid... he would try to eat literally anything green. I had a photo series of him trying to eat various green objects around our house but I have no idea where they are now.

I used to have tortoises. They ended up getting really big we had to donate them to our local Chinese restaurants' pond. I hope they didn't eat him…or her. Oh. And my friend had a turtle with a really long neck. My mom thought it was a snake. XD

[–]IggySorcha 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

First time I read that I thought it said "pound" instead of "pond". You do realize a tortoise is a land animal, right? Now, if you donated a turtle, that'd make sense. Also, perhaps your friend had a snake necked turtle?

[–]atmokineticist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I THINK it was a tortoise. I was 5 when they gave it away, so I can only remember it vaguely. The pond they had was really huge, and it could just roam around with 10 other turtles/tortoises with kois etc.

I believe my friend's turtle was an eastern long-neck. When it pokes it's head out it does look a bit freaky.
