I disagree. Tyson is wonderful. We can't look to the dead to rise, we are Atheists, not Theists.

We carry on. We admire Sagan and others like him because they have passed on, we should honour them. However, we must forge forward like science itself.

To denigrate Tyson is unfair and unjust.

Tyson is WONDERFUL, and we need him and others like him. I believe he will do an excellent job in Cosmos 2.

Science will only improve, and so will our shows and orators that deal with Science.

Tyson is awesome, he only seems to lack power because he is still alive and not idolized in death.

You're fucking lucky to have had Carl Sagan then, and you're fucking lucky to have Neil deGrasse Tyson now.

Not sure what you're saying there...

Same here.

Although, I must say I do prefer Sagan. I feel like Tyson is just missing a critical piece of charisma that Carl Sagan had.

Being high? :)

Honestly, I prefer NdGT, but I fully appreciate Sagan as well. This is why I'm confused. Why does OP think we should have to pick between them?

Being high? :)

Haha, maybe.

I think he's better at conveying the wonder he feels for the universe. Tyson is certainly amicable, but I feel like he's not as easy to empathize with.

Well, it must be just one of those things where it's all who you empathize with better. I get it from Tyson, you from Sagan. Hell, I know an atheist who honestly doesn't like Tim Minchin, and I think he's (the atheist friend) fucking nuts for that. :)

I still don't see what the OP was trying to say or why we'd need to make a choice overall (as a community) as to which is better. But whatever. If one resonates better with you, then you listen to that one more. Easy choice on the individual level.

It's probably because Tyson's black and I'm subconsciously afraid he'll steal my bike.

Well look what he did to Pluto!

No, if it was that, I'd be there with you, because I've been high, but not black. :)

I enjoy things like Sagan's Pale Blue Dot and Contact and whatnot and can feel the beauty and all, but I just can't feel it to the extent I do when I listen to Tyson talking. No idea what it is.

NDT expresses excitement about the Universe.

Carl Sagan expresses awe and wonder for the Universe.

Thing is, I think they both are equally amazing at conveying the beauty of our Universe, they just do it with different emotions.

So very true. I got goose bumps listening to the pale blue dot thing, and when I was at the Hayden Planetarium recently, NDT's introduction got tears in my eyes more than once.

Sagan was a poet. Tyson might be able to obtain what he needs, but for the moment he still doesn't have it.

That's what I think too. I'm hoping he'll find his muse with the Cosmos remakes.

Early in the Cosmos remakes.

Or else he decides to re-record the early stuff once he does.

That model of Jupiter and Saturn looks pretty badass.

Why because he is black? Racist!

Carl Sagan I owe a debt of gratitude for sparking my love and wonder of the Universe. He holds a special place in my mind. I will never forget him or his contributions of attempting to make science accessible to the masses. But he is gone. I hate that fact, but there it is.

Neil deGrasse Tyson will not be Carl Sagan because he's Neil deGrasse Tyson. He has his own mode, his own way of explaining, his own excitement about the stuff he is coveying. He is a hero in that he is taking up the reins of what Carl started and moving it into the 21st Century.

I have a deep respect for both of these men and what they are trying to acheive. There is no comparing them. The both are awesome individuals!

I'll take a live Neil DeGrase Tyson over a dead Carl Sagan any day.

I think NDT and Brian Cox are two of the robots that make up the Voltron which is Carl Sagan.
