Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This is how kids in India start to prepare for IIT entrance exams.

Oh, please, get off your soap box. Do you think it's easy being a single parent AND a snake? That snake is doing the best it can. Let's cut her some slack.

Wow! He's a bit young to be choking his snake though.

This kills the baby.

The snake is defanged. Some tribes do this to subconsciously train their newborns to not fear snakes.

I don't think there is anything subconscious about it.

because babies are so conscious of things, amirite?

I saw something about this on TV a while back. The cobras have either their fangs or venom sacks removed, so the worst that can happen is the baby gets bitten, which still probably hurts like a bitch.

The kid still has more balls than me. I wouldn't get anywhere near that thing.

It's either de-harmed or very acclimatized to people.

Nowhere in the span on the child grabbing it by the neck does it attempt to bite her - which would be the normal response by a cobra to such an indignity.

In this case, it's de-fanged and stitched.

This specific video is mentioned on that wikipedia page, and there's a news article about it as well. Apparently when it went viral, a whole lot of people had the same questions we did.

Though ... that is a Daily Mail article, and they claim it's some sort of infant vs. snake gladitorial deathmatch, so I'm not sure how much credence to give them. It looks to me like the kid is curious and playing, unaware of the danger, and the snake is simply unenthusiastic about being grabbed and grappled by an infant.

[–]Kodix 5 points6 points ago

Oh my god, that is such an adorable example of daily mail "journalism".

IMO, this is a snake charmer's kid, and the kid is learning to not fear snakes. I imagine the kid will be instructed about how deadly this things are when they're old enough to understand, but by then the fear reflex will be gone.

Both I think. Certainly no fangs. What I find surprising is how long it took the cobra to strike.

Yes, but did they take the baby's venom sacs out? Didja think about that?!

[–]udelblue 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most snake handlers/charmers have the fangs of the snake removed [fact] this could probably explain why you see the snake strike but not hook in to the babies head

[–]thatphotoguy 2 points3 points ago

I fail to see the issue. Neither can do much in the way of damage to each other. If you introduce kids to things they're "supposed" to be scared of when they're young, generally they don't develop irrational fears. My kid is absolutely fascinated by snakes and has handled quite a few that (similar to the one in the gif) are incapable of harming her.

...and, no, the bite of a snake that size (without venom) isn't particularly painful. A bee sting hurts a hell of a lot worse and a hell of a lot longer.

[–]jcgv 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being afraid of a venomous snake is not irrational. Not being afraid of something that can kill you is a good way to die early

[–]entologist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He is talking about every scared mother that passes on her irrational fears of ____(bugs, snakes, lizards, mice and other harmless creatures) on to her children. These irrational fears are then passed on the next generation as the cycle continues.

[–]moving0target 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...but I am talking about this, too.

[–]moving0target -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fear, in many situations, is a product of ignorance. Venomous snakes don't scare me because I have experience with them. I'm not going to stick my finger in a venomous snake's mouth, because that would be stupid, but I don't have to fear them because I know that I control the vast majority of the variables in a given situation.

[–]dezmd 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Venomous snakes scare me enough to leave them the fuck alone, and/or shoot them with a shotgun if absolutely necessary. You know, that way, even less chance of dying by venomous snake bite. ;)

[–]uhhhclem 5 points6 points ago

Letting kids get comfortable with hugging king cobras solves two problems at once: the problem of kids growing up afraid of everything, and the problem of there being too many kids.

[–]moving0target 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same general concept of giving a teenager a sports car. Potentially saves lots of money on college tuition.

[–]spikeyfreak 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You fail to see the issue with taking a snake and removing it's fangs and sewing it's mouth shut?

[–]moving0target -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. I don't appreciate someone doing something to an animal that I consider cruel. I don't appreciate someone assigning random concepts to something I post, either. The entire context was from the perspective of the safety of the kid. Anything else you'd like to accuse me of?

[–]spikeyfreak 0 points1 point ago

We aren't genetically programmed to fear snakes. Phobias are a learned behavior from other peoples reactions. There have been studies that showed monkeys learning a fear of snakes through other monkeys behavior.

Here's a play-by-play of what i think is going through the snake's mind. "Oh. It's a Thing. Hey! Guys? Are you going to do something about this thing? It's... getting closer. Hold still, maybe it will go away. OH god it's trying to grab me! Very Still OH WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN"
