Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Given the assignment is a ten-word essay, and she starts him off with "What I learned in boating school is..." for seven words, it always seemed patently obvious to me that he should finish it with "...how to drive."

Then you see the scribbled up paper and it's almost, almost there.

And thus begins the generational divide between 90's children (who don't get this reference) and 00's children (who do).

Edit: By 90's children, I mean people who grew up in the 90's, not people who were born in the mid/late 90's and probably didn't even become sentient until the 00's. These people count as 00's children.

Edit2: Seriously, 00's kids, can you please read the edit above? A true 90's kid grew up in the 90's (and were likely born in the 80's). If you were born in 1996, 1999, or 1995, then I'm sorry but you are by all accounts a 00's kid.

I was born in 1987 and realize that Spongebob was an obvious Ren & Stimpy ripoff.

[–][deleted] 51 points52 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My mom never let me watch Ren & Stimpy. In fact, she really hated me for watching Sponge Bob. "It's those annoying voices!" she told me. So me and my buddy just went upstairs at his house, speared a couple of capri suns, and watched the hell out of 3 pm spongebob. Damn... what happened to those days? Sometimes I think "If I could live eternally in that 8 or 9 year old period, in my ignorance and bliss, I totally would". I think part of myself died when I grew up, you know? Like that southpark episode, where everything suddenly looks like shit to stan*. Damn... I'm too high for the internet right now.

I was born in 1988 and realize that early Spongebob episodes must have had some of the writers and/or artists from The Ren and Stimpy Show. Some of the humor feels similar, but much less... disturbing, I guess, and the hyper-detailed close-ups are definitely either a throwback or the writers/artists using past experience from Ren and Stimpy.

Born in 84 I had no idea what the quote was. Perhaps generations should be divided in blocks of 5 or something.

[–]Blacksheep01 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with you. I've had this discussion with a lot of people but I don't think you and I are part of this "Generation Y" that supposedly covers 1980 - 2000. When I grew up no one had cell phones, I played outside with toys and super soakers, the internet didn't come into houses until I was 12 etc. and so forth, I'm sure you were similar as I was born in 82.

If you were born just 10 years later in 92? You never knew a world without the internet and kids shows were dedicated to telling you to go play outside lol.

I propose that some date range starting possibly in 1978 and ending in 1984 or 5 is a separate generation (flexible here, maybe it is just 80-85 or 79-84), too young for Gen X and too old for Gen Y, we remember the world before the internet, but we were young enough that it wasn't a magical concept that we never grasped, like our parents. We just need a name for our generation. Anyone got any ideas?

Think about the production tolerances needed to make a simple ballpoint pen -- the ball must be round and smooth to within thousandths of an inch, otherwise the ink delivery will be splotchy (technical term!).

Likewise, the surround has to be pressed into place around the ball "just-so". Too loose, and the ink stains your pocket or maybe even the ball falls out. Too tight, and the ink won't be carried around by the ball to the paper smoothly (again, blotchy).

The factories produce millions of them a year, and they almost always work right out of the box (actually, I can't recall the last time I bought one that didn't work...)

To be technical, a rollerball is not actually the same as ball point (a rollerball uses liquid ink) so its kind of half way between a ball point and fountain pen.

Orson Scott Card wrote a really good short story called "The Originist" about this, where a scientist far in the future figures out humanity's home planet by tracing childhood rhymes back through history. It explores this kind of thing as a largely unrecognized but highly organized and meaningful oral history.

I would always just right 'penis' after they gave the OK. I mean, they just gave you permission to write on their hand, why even bother with the charade at that point?

I made sure to make it look enough like penis but enough like pen15 to throw off parents and draw attention to it by students. I'm guessing I never fooled a parent.

I saw a How It's Made about the manufacture of ball-point pens. The thing I was immediately struck by is the number of steps it takes to make a simple throw away pen. There had to be at least 30 steps to manufacture about a dozen parts that all come together into something that we never even take notice of.

At first glance it looks like a close up of an eye of a really sick chameleon; where an infection has caused it to turn blue and pus out and over the crust.

This is from an episode of CSI. The original image was taken from black-white security footage. They then zoomed and enhanced several times to give you this final product. If you look closely, you can make out the reflection of the killer ejaculating on the dead body.

http://home.howstuffworks.com/pen3.htm

the whole article is worth reading from pg 1. but it seems it is held in place by making the diameter of the "holder" a tiny bit smaller than the diameter of the ball.

[–]NeilFraser 8 points9 points ago

In elementary school the ball fell out of my pen once. I didn't immediately see what had happened, I just noticed the mess and that my pen stopped working. So I did what usually fixes a pen, I blew into the suction relief hole. Bad move. With no ball in place, the pen became a one-shot ink bazooka.

The balls in pens are made of tungsten carbide, one of the hardest materials around. Try this, take your pen and try to file it down, you won't be able to.
