Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's just the parking garage. The library itself is a little further down the hill in a really classy, old building with lots of marble.

You're correct, that's the parking garage. The library itself is across the street, in what used to be an old bank. And it's awesome. Watching a movie inside a bank vault isn't something you can do in most places.

And don't forget Timmy, the elderly gent who greets you with a tip of his cap, a grin, and a bit of softshoe as you enter from the side!

I used to live across the street in the lofts at 10th and Main. I walked into that library at least once a week. What a beautiful place. Also: Vault Theater.

Thank you. Ugh. I'm from Kansas City and people post this photo all over the Internet saying that it is the library. In my opinion, the actual library is much cooler, but you never see pictures of it circulating the Internet, do you?

This is the outside view of the actual library. This is the chess set on the roof. This is the vault with the small movie theater inside. And this is where all the books are.

Kansas City, Missouri. The good half.

[–]ToadKC 1 point2 points ago

Yes, I live in KC, MO and KCK is 80% run down, thugville, trash. Not saying KCMO is much better but we definitely have more land, more people, and better areas!

[–]egotrip 22 points23 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It seems like most of the country doesn't realize how cool KCMO truly is. It's not the best city, but I think it deserves more credit. Lots of great art, music, and culture here. One of the best art museums in the world. A great local indie scene. Lots of history. The list goes on...

[–]nathanielray 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. I live in Lawrence ATM and it kind of sucks to be 30-45 minutes away, since that cramps how often I can jot down there

[–]egotrip 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's funny because a lot of people from KC think the same of Lawrence. I was just there last week to see a show at the Bottleneck. Such a cool town.

[–]nathanielray 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh don't get me wrong: I'm a big Lawrence fan and I'm more than happy living 6 blocks from downtown. Kansas City though has that big city thing going on that L doesn't.

I grew up in Kansas City, and I hated my friends' "this city is bullshit" attitude. I grew up North of the river, so it wasn't until I had already left for college that I discovered everything cool south of the river, but even before then I've always had immense pride for my hometown. It's a great city.

Plus, The Get Up Kids are from KCMO, so motherfuck the haters.

[–]egotrip 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel you, man. I know people like that and I think it's just stupid. Why do people like to act like they're so above where they live or grow up? It's just immature and annoying. The Elders, The Republic Tigers, and The Rainmakers, are from here too, dude. And tons of Jazz artists, like Count Basie.

[–]ToadKC 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ya, I am from the Northland and still live up here. KC is a great city. Granted our professional sports teams aren't up to par, but at least we have them! We don't have congestion or "rush hour" like other areas. I love it here, except for the fact that our weather tends to suck! Last year I remember, 65 then snow the next day, then 65 the day after...

Typical weekend in KCMO:

Friday night: Go to First Fridays -street entertainers, art, bars.

Saturday morning: have KU/MU/KSU rivarly Saturday night: Go to power and light, which is like a large shopping mall consisting of nothing but bars

Sunday: Chiefs, chiefs, chiefs, chiefs, chiefs, chiefs, utter disappointment

[–]egotrip 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We have "First Fridays" which is sort of like a local arts fair the first Friday of every month in Westport. There are usually several local and national act performing at clubs, bars, theaters, and venues every weekend and a bit throughout the week. I've actually seen concerts on the roof of the library as well. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the Farmer's Market is set up at the City Market, where you can buy fresh produce, baked goods, imported spices and goods, etc. There are usually quite a few street performers on the weekends. Tons of local sporting events, the biggest two being the Cheifs and Royals games, of course. Several outdoor shopping areas like Zona Rosa, Westport, and the Plaza are hotspots. It depends on the season too. We have several huge haunted houses such as "The Beast" and "The Edge of Hell" set up in old buildings with several levels in the downtown area that are very popular in the fall. In the winter, the Plaza is known for carriage rides and the thousands of lights that cover the area. Sadly, they don't seem to have as many as they did in previous years, so it's not quite as brilliant. In the spring and summer, there are some festivals. The new and big music festivals this year were Middle of the Map and Kanrocksas (which was the only thing that actually was in Kansas).

Pretty much just a lot of fine arts and events, like most cities, but with their own local color. There's always something going on.

[–]dontnation 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no, he's using the, KCK is small and barely developed compared to KCMO argument.
When people say Kansas City, they are referring to Kansas City, MO (even people who have never been here). Ironic but true.
If they mean KCK they would say Kansas City, Kansas. The first page of google image search for "kansas city" doesn't even have a single picture of Kansas City, KS.

Jerry's such a fucking douchebag. My brother used to live in Boulder, CO and saw him out there, just relaxing and eating in a restaurant. He (my brother) went up to him and said "Jerry, how the fuck are you vacationing here when you're supposed to be homeless in KC?" Jerry pretended that it wasn't him. But he's pretty unmistakeable. In about 2007 or so, I was on the Max bus with Jerry.. he was totally unapologetic about begging to get money for weed.

While we were riding, he was making small talk with some apparent friend of his. When his (overweight) friend stepped off the bus, Jerry yelled at him to "Stay away from the bacon", to which the guy yelled back "Sure Jerry: If you stay away from the little boys!". It was pretty amusing, at the time.

My uncle's architectural company Dimensional Innovations did this. They also did the children's hospital, inside the war memorial, the double helix clocktower downtown, the Fox news set, the inside of the Sprint center, the dinosaurs at T-Rex cafe, etc. His company also did the inside of the Kennedy Center in DC, most Imax AMC theatres, and a ton of other cool stuff across America. I'd love to go work for him, and his company has been in top 5 places to work in KC for years, but I hate KC :(

How cool is this man they are like huge looking books. Everyone wants to read the books that they are because that is so neat.

If I was there I would check out one of those books the first time I was there and read it because I wanted to read the classics for a long time but don't really want to read them.

Man imagine all libraries like this it would get everyone motivated to read books or at least to think about them more than a regular building would.

Just up the street from the stairs there's a bullet hole in one of the books. A crazy girl shot her boyfriend and one bullet either missed or went through the guy and in to the book. My friend showed up moments after the shooting and he watched the guy die on the sidewalk. A few days later he pointed out the bullet hole to me when I was over.

Damn it! I lived in KC for 13 years and walked by that often. Never knew I could have snapped a photo and got front page. Karma jealous!

I did a double take to make sure... yep. Front page... it isn't even realistic without the bums sitting in front of the parking garage!

Completely classless. They should just put up NASCAR ads instead.

I was in KC just last year. My commanding officer lost 5 brain points when we went past this building.

"Holy cow! Sergeant look at that building! What do you think it is?" (-2) "Sir I think that's the Brazilian Steakhouse" (just for fun and to see what he says) "No... come on, man. It's made to look like books! Why would a steakhouse be made to look like books" (-2) "Well, and I'm just saying this, but maybe it has something to do with the library right there?" "Oh there's a library?" (-1)

First. Wow Kansaas has a library.

Second Wow they actually put real book titles on the library. Not just a bunch of bible covers.

Third Wow no protesters crying about the satanism of JRR Tolkien or something stupid?

I live in the KC area and took one of the photos linked to this post. First, the library is pretty amazing. Second, there are great parts of the city and there are crappy parts to it. That's pretty much what you get everywhere, right? Third, thanks for freaking me out on Flickr! I saw my stats shoot up and then had to create a Reddit account so I could see what the fuss was about! :p

[–]PostPostModernism 0 points1 point ago*

That there's a duck if I ever did see one.

edit for clarification: by a 'duck' I'm referring to Robert Venturi's architectural concept that most commercial buildings can be categorized as either a 'duck' or a 'decorated shed'. A decorated shed is a typical square building with a large sign advertising the wares. Or, a building that does not represent what is inside of it. A 'duck' is a building that is shaped like what it is used for. A duck shaped building is one that sells ducks or duck-related products. A book-shaped building obviously has something to do with books, like a library.

These ideas, and this book in particular, are some of what defined Postmodernism last century. I do not like ducks.

[–]darthkrash 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wouldn't it have to be a car-shaped building? It's a parking garage. Also, it's really just a big sign on the front of the building.

[–]PostPostModernism 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's for a library. Parking garage can be considered just a program of the library.

But yes, you have a point, a car would also be appropriate.

[–]AsskickMcGee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Move along now, Timothy McVeigh. It's just a stack of books. No government-owned buildings here. Just books...

Not made out of books.

I'm disappointed.

[–]BrentTH 0 points1 point ago

Somebody downvoted you, but I'm upvoting you because I had the same beef. The building is clearly not made of fucking books, it's just a facade to make it look like that. Where the fuck would you even get books that big in the first place. The OP is a dang doofus if you ask me!

Ooooh, a library made out of books...

Ooooh, it's only the parking garage...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's not "made out of books". That's "constructed to look as if it were made out of books 100x their original size."

[–]rubygeek 2 points3 points ago

Thank you for pointing that out. We were all terribly confused and thought it was actually made out of books.

I used to live in the building you can see in the background! I loved living there, but there wasn't a lot to do after 5pm. There was a bar connected to our building called john's big deck, but we didn't go there often. The library is awesome, by the way. I liked to go there to read and write.

[–]musicobsession 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What apartment were you in? I live there and have since it opened! John's is under new ownership again and isn't reopened yet. Miss having people around late for the most part :(

I used to live in apt 508 facing the library. It was an amazing view, especially when some cool storm was coming in. I really miss those gigantic windows. I live in Chicago now and everything is so much more expensive, but we like it here too.

That thing is hideous. They should of left the parking garage as is - an oppresive, monolithic structure of exposed concrete, revealing endless rows of cars. It would've been a thousand times better than that gaudy thing.
