I love when he builds a hang glider in one minute

It doesn't even look rag-tag at the end! The plastic is perfectly formed to the frame.

I can't believe I'm arguing against the validity of a TV show.

[–]aoeu00 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. If they tried to actually use the one he built, fker would have fell to his death the moment he stepped off the edge.

[–]seanbduff 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Gotta hand it to the writers though. With the excessive and unnecessary use of mortars, you almost forget it's impossible to build a hang glider like that.

[–]modus 11 points12 points ago

And that it's impossible to accurately aim a mortar at a target.

You know, I have never watched an episode of MacGyver before, and it just occurred to me: What is MacGyver supposed to be? Is he a cop? A private eye? A spy?

[–]tenhotuisku[S] 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

MacGyver works as a problem solver for the fictional Phoenix Foundation in Los Angeles. Educated as a scientist and with a background from a fictional United States government agency, the Department of External Services (DXS), he is used as a resourceful secret agent able to solve a range of problems.wiki

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's a pussy machine with a solid foundation in engineering and badassery.

[–]thinkmac 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He is like a rugged down to earth Americanized Jeep-Loving 007, working for a fictional "Phoenix Foundation" that seems to have interests all over the world, with connections in higher up government agencies.

[–]rtilde 405 points406 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did he jump over a shark with the jetski after that?

[–]shadmere 311 points312 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is actually a lot more rational when you realize that in this episode, he was operating officially as a spy, basically. This was more him acting like Bond than stereotypical MacGyver. He didn't build that thing himself out of spare parts; it was given to him by a powerful organization as a failsafe.

Not that it's not goofy. It is goofy. But it's not like he made it out of gum.

[–]Squarish 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you for this. I couldn't really remember the details of the episode, but I did remember that the jetski was not a MacGyver creation. Not that he hasn't done some comparable ridiculousness

[–]dclowd9901 15 points16 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This was always dumb about bond movies. "Here's this device Q is making for you with questionable utility."

"Oh, look, it's exactly perfect for this situation!"

[–]rmosler 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like to think they just showed the devices Q gave Bond that turned out to be useful. I also like to think there is about 6 extra hours of film of this stuff left on the cutting room floor.

[–]super6logan 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually was assuming he carved the jetski out of wood with a toenail clipper which made this even crazier.

[–]smellslikegelfling 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What you said makes sense. But, a jet ski made to look like a coffin isn't exactly the most versatile spy gadget. Then again, that gif seems to have proven me wrong.

"Guys, if you're going to kill me, just please don't put me in this box and throw me overboard."

[–]shadmere 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He was hiding in the box already. The people carrying the coffin were on his side, trying to sneak him into . . . I don't remember. East Germany or Russia or something. They saw they were about to be challenged by the police, so they through him over the side. It was a last chance kind of deal.

[–]honcas 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They were actually trying to sneak him out of a country after a mission. The opposing side had allowed them to carry out a body, and the river was the border between the two countries. The opposition got a little distressed and decided they wanted to search the coffin, so the pallbearers had to throw it over the side to get MacGyver out. They never really explain what happened to the pallbearers, iirc.

[–]swuboo 15 points16 points ago

I would imagine they were arrested and charged with illegal maritime dumping and unlawful disposal of human remains.

Alternatively, they pushed a button and the ship turned into a giant jet ski.

I liked McGyver, but IMHO, he jumped the shark when he and a brainy little girl blew up a jeep by heating the amo clip on a gun sitting next to the jeep by focusing the light from the sun on the clip, magnifying glass style, but with the reflector from a head light.

I don't want to know the context. This gif is perfect just the way it is.

[–]TurdS 46 points47 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually the context is still pretty good too. The scene is a family walking a coffin over a bridge from East Germany to West Germany. On the West side of the bridge there's the other half of the family waiting to receive the coffin. Along with the two parts of the family there are Russian cops and some German cops. As the family meets in the middle the cops start to get suspicious. One thing leads to another and the family tosses the coffin over the side of the bridge, and we get one of the coolest escapes on TV.

[–]glassuser 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IIRC it was set up by the phoenix foundation, so there was plenty of money and pre-planning available. This isn't a regular macgyverism, more of an setup to an episode.

[–]kernelhappy 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If he was able to escape from the midspan of the bridge on jetski, why didn't he just have someone dump him in the water before crossing the bridge?

Oh and why do bad guys always keep running to get closer to the speeding vehicle heading away from them before shooting. The guards run an extra 15 feet while he's starting to motor away rather than just shooting from where they are at a stopped/slower target.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So the Russian & German cops get suspicious, and in order to make them less suspicious, the family tosses a coffin into the water? I'm going to have to do some youtube searching on this because that's a great way to get rid of the police after I rob a bank or something... I'm just going to have to carry around a coffin all the time.

[–]Dark_Shroud 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They threw the coffin in so MacGyver could get away as they planned. This one wasn't a random stunt by him.

[–]fredtastic 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jet skis weigh 600 lbs. The cops should have become suspicious when everyone in the family got a hernia trying to lift the damned thing.

[–]builderb 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought about that after seeing the gif. To be fair, a specialized jet ski could be made in the 200lb range. It would have a reduced fuel tank, lightweight components, smaller engine... etc. Think of it as a go kart rather than an SUV. Its sole purpose would be to provide a quick getaway and operate only for a short duration, so everything could be designed with that in mind. Assuming MacGyver is 180 lbs, a 200 lb jetski coffin would total 380 lbs. Since there were four people carrying it, it would be about 95 lbs per person, pretty heavy but not outside of feasibility...

wait why am I typing this?

[–]candygram4mongo 51 points52 points ago

This isn't really characteristic of MacGuyver, though. This seems more like James Bond gadget stuff. If he built the jet-ski/coffin himself using scrap lumber and a motor from an oscillating fan, that would be typical MacGuyver. Of course, he might have.

[–]Hypersapien 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a conversation between two gang members, one of them warning the other about what MacGyver can do. The other one responds "Can he stop a bullet?"

Later in the episode, he stops a bullet. By jamming a ruler into the back of the gun just as it's being fired, blocking the hammer.

[–]qoa 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was less stuff like this. More him building a hang glider out of paperclips, hope, and a dream.
For example in one episode while fighting robots, he took a lighter, a lid to a shoe box, and a spray can, which made a bad ass flame thrower. Sure you could just spray the lighter. But he mounted that shit. Then used it to destroy sensors on the robots.
EDIT: In the 80's people would even use "MacGyver" as an adverb similar to "google it". It really was a sensation here. Rightly so too.

[–]bsilver 14 points15 points ago

I think there were several in-jokes with that show. One of the great things about Stargate was they never took themselves too seriously while still, overall, delivering a decent sci-fi series, right down to having an episode that spoofed their own show.

To be honest, Breaking Bad has some pretty McGuyver-esque moments as well: "oh, we'll just empty out some etch-a-sketches and make a thermite device to melt an unseen door lock... " or "I'll make a mercury crystal to blow up psychotic bad guy's office and walk away with a giant pile of money."

You see, it's because this is what's known as a 'GIF' (Graphics Interchange format) file. These files can be thought up of a compilation of images that play on sucession forming what could be referred to as 'Motion Picture'. It's this inherit characteristic of the GIF format, plus the fact that by default most modern web browsers will automatically play frame 1 after the last frame, leading it to look like he is 'doing it over and over again', when in fact it is quite simply an animation looping.

Hope that clears that up for you.

[–]thegleaker 13 points14 points ago

That stunt is freakin' child's play.

You're talking about a show where he used a helicopter to air-lift the prized horse of an arab Sheik by the pommel of the saddle, as he was riding it.

[–]Chairboy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's pretty hard on the pommel.

I recommend actually watching the entire first 5 minutes of the video, but that's right around where the money shot is. But, if you watch the rest of the video, you can see him joust a sword wielding man out of his saddle with a shepherd's cane!

Oh, MacGyver.

I've always wanted a wooden panel jetski and didn't want to have to deal with the folks at oldsmobile to get it. Shut up and take my money, MacGyver.

[–]bloodwine 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Realistic or not, I think we need another show similar to MacGyver for the younger generations. Every children/family show I see involve people who are celebrities, dancers, singers, or some "useless" career.

Old TV shows had protagonists that were scientists, engineers, astronauts, and do-it-yourself gadget mercenaries.

What I love about reddit - post a picture of MacGyver using a seemingly ridiculous object to escape, someone will be familiar enough with it to say "Nah it's cool. He was a spy in that episode and that was given to him. He didn't build it."

[–]Polyfan2 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was like Bond, without any illusions of being remotely realistic.

[–]BlueScreen 9 points10 points ago

I still say MacGuyver defusing a bomb with a hockey ticket is more ridiculous.

I was 6 and she was like 40 and no she wasn´t hot at all^ Also her last name was very close to a childish word for penis in german. (I´m german) Most akward moment when I heard her last name the first time and My brothers and me had to laugh for 1 minute and my parents apologized for us.

They stole the premise of that scene from Funeral In Berlin, which is a pretty good film. The first Harry Palmer film (The IPCRESS File) was better, though.

[–]McGravin 2 points3 points ago

There are a lot of contenders for "most ridiculous stunt by MacGyver".

I think the least believable one, at least for me, was the time he had a radio that was out of batteries so he plugged it into a cactus, then used it to triangulate the position of a missile in mid-flight.

[–]paolog 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The funny bit is where the coffin falls into the water end first, and all that happens to MacGyver inside is that he rocks side to side a bit.

[–]perb123 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Instead of breaking his neck, yes. But I think he had built a bracing mechanism with another paper clip.

[–]Icecastle12 2 points3 points ago

I think MacGyver is a hacker. He has a coffin that turns into a jetski. win.

MacGyver was my favorite show growing up, and pretty much inspired me (along with ST:TNG) to become an engineer.

Unfortunately, looking back upon the show nowadays? it was a lot awesomer when I was a kid and didn't know any better.

Reminds me of the time the A-Team escaped prison by getting jobs in the prison hair salon, strapping hair dryers to the legs of lawn chairs, inflating with hot air garbage bags that had been tied to the chairs, and floating over the prison walls.
