"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

You reinforced the exclusion of individuals who don't share the same "inside joke" knowledge as the hivemind. And received praise and renown from your digital peers in the form of upvotes/karma.

I found this observation fascinating.

[–]snoharm 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I explained to him that he didn't get the joke. You're really forcing the non-colloquial vocab there, we're impressed and all but it's pretty awkward.

[–]Inconsequent 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The vocab is common, the arrangement is not.

The fact that you pointed out he didn't get the joke earned him downvotes and you upvotes, thus leading me to believe that you knowingly or unknowingly reinforced the hivemind mentality regarding "inside jokes".

I've always understood it to be an argument over the most recent iteration of the game, until Black Ops was released. Much of the arguing died down after that.

Though if we're comparing Modern Warfare 2 to Bad Company 2 (which is an asinine comparison. Completely different playstyles. It's like comparing Counter Strike to TF2) I have to side with BC2. But I always prefer a game that encourages team play over the lone wolf style.

Even though I main Scout in TF2, and pretty much play as a lone wolf.

[–]attrition0 6 points7 points ago

I like both. Though not MW2 because no dedicated servers. That didn't mean the whole franchise was shit though.

[–]tHeSiD 0 points1 point ago

Its multiplayer was great as well, because it was basically a quake 3 mod.

[–]CapNRoddy 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't dislike Black Ops. I just dislike that it's a full priced game with the value of like, at most a quarter of its price.

[–]attrition0 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you primarily play SP or MP? The SP was roughly 4-5 hours so it definitely wasn't a value-add or anything (and it was incoherent to be honest). The MP however was alright, and for those who like the series I suppose it's also the selling point and the reason it has value to them.

[–]ltd_ed 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You'd think people would understand by now, wouldn't you? Call of Duty has always comprised a relatively brief, yet intense and heavily-scripted single-player campaign, and fun and compelling online multiplayer. That's absolutely the selling point.

I remember I played the first couple levels of the Black Ops SP mode when I first got it, and didn't even come back to it until I had put over 100 hours into MP.

[–]darkmessiah 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

SP in Call of Duty 2 was a gaming highlight for me.

MP in Call of Duty 2 was a great experience because it didn't have all the messiness of the last few games (which is all right, but Call of Duty 2 is simply a different MP animal to the new Call of Duties).

[–]emkajii 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...always? Did you start gaming in 2008 or something? CoD and CoD2 had fantastic single-player campaigns, and were sold on the strength of the SP. Heck, the original selling point of the franchise was that it was a single-player FPS with intelligent, functional AI teammates. The multiplayer modes in those were just kind of a throw-in. It wasn't until CoD4:MW that CoD became synonymous with online multiplayer.

[–]ltd_ed 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I started playing Call of Duty when the original was released in 2003, and while the single-player was great, it was susceptible to the same criticism that the later CoD games have been: it was heavily scripted, with big set pieces, and it was relatively short. Maybe the game was sold on the strength of the SP - weren't most games, at that time? - but the multiplayer was really the best part, and you could tell the focus that Infinity Ward put into crafting it. I'm not sure if you ever actually played the original CoD online at the time, but its multiplayer was very fun, popular and far from an afterthought, believe me. So yes, a brief and intense single-player campaign coupled with great, long-lasting online multiplayer is definitely what Call of Duty was about, long before CoD4 took the console world by storm.

[–]emkajii 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was "relatively short," but in the sense that Portal 2 was relatively short, not in the sense that Black Ops was relatively short. The idea was to make an excellent, memorable start-to-finish single-player experience. That meant putting painstaking care into level design, as opposed to the MoH theory of "eh, throw together a long twisty street and then fill it with clone Nazis who can't shoot straight." And come to think of it, it wasn't that much shorter than MoH games were at the time.

As for modern criticism? The game is eight years old. Frankly, cinematic set pieces were still special in 2003. Not brand new by any means, but still novel enough. They added quite a bit of immersion to a game that prided itself on it. The Stalingrad missions were amazing. Sure, looking back now we can say that the game is a bit heavy on low-replayability scripted sequences...but judge it by its time. There's a difference between using a new storytelling technique and exploiting a tired storytelling technique, even if it's the same technique. There's a reason CoD got phenomenal reviews for its single-player, and Black Ops got eviscerated for its single-player. CoD was absolutely one of the best single-player FPS experiences of its time. Black Ops is a cop-out for its time.

As for the multiplayer? The multiplayer was fine. I can't judge well enough on how "well crafted" it was, since I was mostly playing America's Army and BF1942, but I don't remember having any problems with it. It just wasn't particularly fun to me. Regardless, we can agree that it was by no means the selling point. It wasn't what Infinity Ward pointed to when they promoted the game, and it wasn't what most gamers were thinking when they bought the game. It was an incidental feature, however good, that only became synonymous with the brand with CoD4.

[–]ltd_ed 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't had a problem with the SP in CoD4, or MW2, or Black Ops for that matter. Maybe I have poor taste, but they've all been fun for me, and have served the purpose I have for them: to get warmed up and into the new game before hopping online. I think they've improved them over time, too... More varied environments and less of the infinitely respawning bad guys until you cross some invisible threshold. From what I remember, much of the criticism of Black Ops was regarding its pacing - the game just doesn't let up. Again, it's not a problem for me, and it keeps things interesting the entire time. CoD campaigns are all about putting the player in the middle of a war movie-type environment and letting them experience being a part of it.

As for the multiplayer, I think you misunderstood me. Yes, the game was sold on the SP, but so was every other game back then, whether its actual focus was SP or not. The MP in CoD was in no way an incidental feature or an afterthought; it was very well made, balanced, fun, and brought unique features to the table, like the killcam. Not only that, but the developers focused on it after release, and made it a point to support the game and to listen and communicate with fans. I remember the early days, I remember when they added the patch to remove bunny hopping (and the ensuing worry among fans that it would slow the game down too much) and when they added the Headquarters mode, things that are still essential to the games today. They paid attention and made it great. CoD4 is when Call of Duty became a phenomenon - on consoles, in particular - but its focus was the same as always, and it was advertised and sold on the SP as much as ever.

[–]CapNRoddy -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The MP is very poorly done, in my opinion. All the perks and killstreaks make it into a clusterfuck. And the spawn system is terrible.

Also even if the multiplayer was the greatest multiplayer game of all time, it's not worth fifty bucks.

[–]attrition0 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't disagree with your points on the MP, the killstreaks aren't my thing.

However the best multiplayer game of all time would most certainly be worth $50 to me :) That is more of a subjective thing. I rarely pay $50 for a single player game though, value is in the eye of the beholder, eh?

[–]ulbador -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought I was the only one. I don't really play a ton of FPS, but decided to dive into Black Ops. In my mind, I thought I should play the SP mode first just to learn all the dynamics and then hit up the MP mode. The SP was total shit, and incoherent as you mention. At least I got my value out of playing MP.

Edit:

And Zombies. That's where it's at for me.

[–]tyrghast 1 point2 points ago

Taunts, halloween, ctf, cp, payload, king o the hill, towering pile of hats, jar of urine, mega baboon hearts, awesome meet-the videos... I don't know of any other shooters which give as much for the price.

[–]AnusFelcherMD 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hats and urine are definitely nice features to have in a first person shooter, of course. I will hand it to TF2 for supporting the game and keeping people playing the same game for years. I've never played it, but from the videos it does look like a lot of fun.

[–]merrickal 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being a TF2 fan I'd recommend it, since it's free you've nothing to lose for giving it a go. Despite all the flaming against free-players, have a go.

[–]darkmessiah 5 points6 points ago

I don't think anyone here thinks that Call of Duty as a whole franchise is shit. They believe that the last 4 games have, however. Let me count the rehashes...

WaW MW2 Black Ops MW3

Yeah, just 4. The ones before that were great. (Except COD 3, though I liked the MP)

I liked WaW MP, I admit, since HC WaW made some pretty darn realistic matches every once in a while. I'm a simulation junkie, which is why Red Orchestra and Battlefield get me a little more.

Personally, I still think Call of Duty 1 is the best in the series. My friends and I always bust it out the multiplayer at LANs and have way more fun than some more modern FPS games.

[–]darkmessiah 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I personally don't have much much experience with Call of Duty 1 (only Finest Hour since I only had an Xbox back then), but if it's any similar to Call of Duty 2, boy did I have a great time doing some TDM with that game.

[–]Hairy_dan 0 points1 point ago

It's fairly similar, but more fast paced (no regenerating health, high damage etc.) both were the best COD multiplayer games in my opinion.

The only problem I have with Battlefield is Bach's argument that showing blood in a Mature rated game was immature. Also, "I don't want to say that war is bad..." Yeah, he's an idiot.

It's a game about people who kill other people. Might as well make a paintball simulator if you don't want to acknowledge that.

The thing about the fanboys is that most of the trash talk (that I've seen, anyway) is from these "over it" Battlefield kids, almost like they're trying to convince themselves their game is so much better. They haven't played either title, yet they're convinced Battlefield is better, demonizing Activision while BF is published by EA (lol), talking shit about graphics when all we've seen of BF3 is PC footage with the settings maxed out while the demos of CoD are from the Xbox360 version...

I think anyone who's followed these two series for any length of time knows how it's going to end up: MW3 will be MW2 with tweaked gameplay and new maps, it will sell far more copies than BF, people who enjoy CoD will love it and the haters will call them dumb for liking it. BF3 will sell reasonably well, the single-player will be clunky but the MP will be fun, mainly if you play with friends because of all the vehicle campers and griefers. Activision will sell expensive but popular DLC, and EA will provide "free DLC" in the form of unlocking existing gametypes on existing maps. And so on and so forth.

I don't understand the constant comparison. Or the idea that if you don't like one, it means you hate it and are a fanboy of the other.

It is so rare I see one of these and bust out laughing, but I did at this one. Nice jorb.

I'll get both, but play Skyrim instead!

Cod is more o a fast paced game and that's it's appeal. BF is more slowed down with focus on squad play and tactics involving vehicles. IMO both great games but if you don't have an attention span longer than 3 seconds BF is not for you.

BF doesn't mean battlefront, does it?

[–]merrickal 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, BF = Battlefield.

Since SWBF is based on a movie/story/non-game origins. It doesn't count.

what do you get out of your BF's butthurt? Why do you relish it so? I mean, so far I'm liking the cut of your jib, but I'd like to understand it more before I sign on fully.

Counterstrike players just sit back and enjoy the bickering.

Who cares? Why do people take this stuff so seriously? You'd think everyone arguing for a game has stock in the company or something.

I will be playing both. No one has a gun to my head saying I have to pick JUST one. Jeez, dudes.

I'm not a huge fan of either, and I own both(though I skipped the last CoD game).

But there is something to be said about CoD being rehashed a million times on the same exact engine. It feels like ever since CoD 4, the only thing we've gotten out of the newer CoD's is the single player(which I've actually enjoyed). But multiplayer-wise, Everything else is just new maps, and slightly different guns.

That's my take, though I don't particularly care about either, like I said.

[–]CaptainJackie9919 0 points1 point ago

I read that as "Everytime I see BoyFriend and Call of Duty fanboys fighting"...

...Then I saw "butthurt".

[–]raspootan 0 points1 point ago

And Valve doesn't have fanboys, that's putting it far too mild. No, Valve has loyal corporate worshipers who pray to Gabe Newell and, in accordance with most religions, have a special hat for every occasion.

DAE remember the time where COD was being compared to Halo? Why is COD being compared to every shooter? Next is going to be compared with borderlands 2 or something remotely related.

[–]Moath 0 points1 point ago

I see them both as generic war shooters anyway

Let the butthurt flow through you.

Well that's a pretty disgusting and slightly confusing image.

Funny how the nostalgia crazed r/gaming will get 10 times as butthurt if you insult a game older than 5 years old.

This entire site is the definition of butthurt, you don't even know what it means.

I play neither, but I'm pretty sure CoD sucks-unless you have an explanation for why it was on its knees with a cock in its mouth?
