Credit goes to David Hayward, at nakedpastor.com. And yes, he is an actual Christian pastor.

It'd be better if the image of a god to a believer was above the image of a god to an atheist, because then the whole image could end after the text. That'd be a bit more accurate.

Shouldn't the right side be shiny and reflective?

This is really dumb. Not only do atheists and believers have very specific images and perceptions of God, those images and perceptions are also quite different. So the basic double-premise of this comic--that Good looks the same to atheists and believers and that God looks like nothing--is entirely incorrect and just silly. God looks like many different things to many different people.
Even if you meant it to be entirely literal, wherein "looks like" means "concrete physical appearance, viewable by the human sensory mechanism of eyesight", it's still dumb because there are lots of very real things that cannot be viewed or described in concrete terms. Such as freedom, love, idea, evil, pain... I could go on and on, and so could anyone. So the basic argument of this comic--that since neither atheists nor believers know what God looks like, God doesn't exist--is invalid.
This is why I get so annoyed with r/atheism. It seems like the top posts often represent people who define themselves by what they DON'T believe instead of what they DO believe. I feel like this whole subreddit exists for the soul purpose of proving Christians wrong, which is a monumental waste of time because they don't care what you think!
Okay, I could keep going but I'll stop. I really need to stop reading this subreddit. Commence with the downvotes.
[–]GMNightmare 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
...
Now that was really dumb.
Atheists don't have specific images or perceptions of "god"... care to guess why? Tell me, what does nothing look like? What does nonexistence look like?
As for the majority of believers, most believers when pressured about it claim to say god is invisible. This is the same in terms of visibility as nonexistence.
Just because you can think of other things that don't have a visible stimulus doesn't make this point "stupid". Nor is freedom, love, idea, evil, pain real THINGS. They are emotions, I'm not sure if you know this, but emotions are not objects or beings.
Also, your claim to what the "argument" the comic brings up is BS. You made it up so you could have an imaginary beef with it. The main point of the comic was probably just to get a laugh. It would have probably been successful if you didn't take everything so seriously to the point you get a hernia looking at a picture displaying nothing.
The rest of your post is commonly refuted religious propaganda... spewed from perhaps not the mouth of a religious nut, but somebody who doesn't really care to understand others non-the-less. You claim Christians don't care what we think... well take this in stride, we don't really care what YOU think. Your claimed problems with this subreddit is nothing more than a reflection of your own twisted psychology.
Also, please, stop reading the subreddit instead of complaining and threatening to so we don't have to listen to your incessant whining.

What do unicorns look like? What does professional wrestling look like? What do my four-year-old niece's imaginary friends look like? What does Vishnu look like? What does Thor look like? All those things are "nonexistent" and yet they can all be described and depicted in great detail. But to be fair, my niece's drawings of her imaginary friends don't really look like anything. My point is that there is no relationship between what something looks like and whether or not it exists.
I don't know how many believers you know, but the ones I know--both Christians and other religions--have very specific ideas of what God looks like. And I know the Bible and the Qur'an are full of descriptions of God, angels, heaven, hell, etc. You're just being obtuse.
I hate to break it to you, but emotions are real things. As are all the things on my list of invisible real things, none of which emotions by the way. And whether or not the existence of invisible things make the point of the comic "stupid" depends entirely on what the point of the comic is, which leads us to your next item. Also, I didn't say "stupid", I said "dumb". Don't use quotes unless you're quoting.
Also, your claim to what the "argument" the comic brings up is BS. You made it up so you could have an imaginary beef with it. The main point of the comic was probably just to get a laugh.
You're partially correct, in that I'm not the author and don't really know what he or she was trying to say with this comic. Obviously humor was part of it. But I didn't make it up, I inferred it. I'm sure there are several possible meanings and maybe the author didn't really have any particular statement in mind. But if s/he wasn't trying to prove that God doesn't exist by pointing out that believers don't know what God looks like, then I have no idea what the comic means.
It would have probably been successful if you didn't take everything so seriously to the point you get a hernia looking at a picture displaying nothing.
How do you know how seriously I take anything? I'm taking you seriously right now, even though your response was kind of childish and mean, because you made some valid although I think incorrect comments about my comments and I wanted to respond. I suppose my comment history might bely a certain long-windedness about matters of religion and philosophy, but those things are important to me and I enjoy discussing them. And I get very annoyed intellectual laziness and intellectual dishonesty, both of which I think this comic displays.
Religious propaganda? Doesn't really care to understand others? Twisted psychology? Incessant whining? Were you in the process of responding to some other comment and accidentally posted that here? You speak like you have some kind of magic window into my soul, but I'm afraid you're just not making any sense.

You seem to be thinking of the term "god" as a specific being. I'm sorry, the term god applies to more than one object. How many people do you know have seen god? One of the points, which literally went straight over your head, is that nobody has seen one.
For your religious friends... care to give an example? No? Of course not. Because quite frankly, it is common staple for people to claim god is invisible to our eyes. The descriptions of god in the bible are not visible characteristics but personality.
Emotions ARE NOT THINGS. Do you know the definition of a thing? Do I have to quote a dictionary for you? A thing is an specific object, not a imprecise chemical reaction in your brain. In your list, love and pain are emotions, by the way. Oh, and quotes have more functions than just identifying what you said.
A comic is not a long philosophical post requiring absolute validity. Here's the problem.. the comic doesn't say ANYTHING about the validity of god. It does not claim he doesn't exist. That you went to that thought is all on you.
And no, that was a response to the rest of yours.
I'm sorry you're having such a hard time understanding my points above. Maybe if you read them a few more times they'll make more sense. Hopefully you'll at least see how incomplete and nonsensical your responses have been so far. As for myself, I don't have anything more to say that I haven't already said. I wish you nothing but the best, but I suspect that life will continue to be difficult for you.
[–]GMNightmare 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Funny, what a cop out. Sorry, you seem to have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about.
I think the summation is this: You took the comic to try to be arguing that god doesn't exist. And you know what? That is your own fault.
[–]HaywireNZ 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
The top posts are the ones about what people don't believe because that is what almost everyone who visits this sub-reddit has in common, the lowest common denomination (har har) if you will. As for why some atheist people want so badly for religion to be gone -
http://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/search?q=why&restrict_sr=on
I'm sure some of these posts with the word why in the title will be people explaining why this place is important to them, and why disproving religion as completely as possible is important to them.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
It seems like the top posts often represent people who define themselves by what they DON'T believe instead of what they DO believe.
I absolutely see your point. That's why I don't call myself an atheist. If anything, I'm an apatheist, because I don't find the word god useful for anything personally.
I think the comic's point can be better summarized like this: "Anyone who describes a personal god is simply projecting/delusional/indoctrinated and their life experiences, examined outside of their bias, don't suggest the actual existence of such a deity any more than those of an atheist would".
[–]superwinner 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I can tell you one this, if you asked 1000 people who believe in gods to describe or define those gods, you'll get 1000 different answers. But regardless, their description of a man in a robe or a man in a chair or a glowing orb of light does not change the fact that all gods looks the same to them as they do to atheists, they look like nothing.
