Reminds me of diarrhea. The first part is the dry part and doesn't seem so bad. 2 seconds later: shit waterfall.

If there is one thing I love about working government contractors like Lockheed it's their toys. The military has the best shit around. What I would do with an hour and a drone.

more like Angels of Not Death since it saves your ass from heatseeking missles and such

[–]mr_mofo 62 points63 points ago

yeah, i always thought the flares ere called the 'guardian angel'

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are as mentioned by several people above. The OP not only got the wrong plane model but he also named it something that he probably thought would sound more "badass".

[–]MikeOfAllPeople 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I think Angel of Death is in reference to the AC-130, which is not what the picture is anyway. But yea, flares are just decoys.

[–]Snarfthedstroyer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See, when I think of the 130s I think PJs which would again be more guardian angel.

[–]BdotDS 10 points11 points ago*

From my experience as KC-130 enlisted aircrew in the USMC, they often save you from goat farmers with bond fires rather than heat-seeking missiles.

[–]Spartan1170 1 point2 points ago

You still in? if so, Does your squadron have the Hellfire mod on their birds yet?

[–]BdotDS 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What in the world are you talking about? The USMC uses KC-130s for aerial refueling, cargo and personnel transport. The USMC was making the transition to the J model as I was getting out. I suspect you are trying to troll me into saying something stupid, because you don't believe that I used to fly on these things.

[–]gtny 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Could this be what Spartan was talking about?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_KC-130#Harvest_HAWK

Seems to be an current/future alternate weapons system load-out for the KC-130J. I don't think he was trying to troll you.

These are indeed KC-130s. I see these at work on a daily basis. This is the Marine Corps variant. Still badass.

[–]feureau 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, could you explain what's going on in that pic a bit? It looks like the big plane is having some anal flare with thelittle plane.

[–]illmaticc 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When a AAM (Air-to-Air Missile) or SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) is fired, they rely on the heat of the exhaust to stay on target. When these Guardian Angel flares are released, they create false heat targets that counter the infrared homing systems inside of the missile. Something you can't see in this photo is the chaff being released. These are metal fragments that distract radar-guided missiles. The last part you do not see is the aircraft pulling away from the flares and reducing engine power to distance itself from its heat signature. And that, in a nutshell, is how countermeasures work.

Isn't that a 105m howitzer? That shell would make a fucking cow explode upon impact.

[–]Scurrin 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Along with the surrounding 10 meters. The dual 40mm bofors would be enough to make the cow explode.

[–]Guysmiley777 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The variants with a 105mm cannon only have 1 40mm cannon (the howitzer replaced one of the Bofors cannons).

[–]Scurrin 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but they still have one, and it would still destroy a cow.

[–]Efanito 4 points5 points ago

In case you're wondering.
Not sure you are understanding me on this. It's a joke, I'm making fun of the film. I know the maximum effective range of an RPG-7 is about 200 meters and that it is unguided, not to mention susceptible to headwind. Quite a bit below the operational height of a hercules gunship.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This clip from a show on the Military Channel has some good background on the gun and the A-10 aircraft. Just listen to the sound it makes when it fires.

[–]Guysmiley777 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, if you hear it that means you're still alive! The cannon rounds travel at well past Mach 1, so you'll hear rounds impact before you hear the cannon firing.

Can=tank. It's pretty accurate. It strips armor like nobody's business.

[–]AerialAmphibian 2 points3 points ago

Yes, it takes the A-10 about half a second of cannon fire on average to destroy a tank.

I was in Atlantic City a couple of weeks ago and there was some A-10's practicing for the airshow, and it was swooping around the city, buzzing the skyline. It was cool.

[–]Guysmiley777 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually it went like this:

Hey, let's put some .30 caliber miniguns on a small cargo aircraft, that'll be awesome!

Hey, these little miniguns kind of suck, let's add some 20mm Vulcan cannons on a bigger cargo aircraft!

Hey, these 20mm cannons don't make enough explosions, let's add some 40mm cannons and ditch the miniguns entirely.

Hey, these 40mm cannons are OK, I guess. But let's replace one with a 105mm field howitzer!

Hey, let's ditch the 20mm cannons, add a single 25mm Vulcan cannon and pressurize this bitch so we can fly at higher altitudes.

The last thought was to ditch the 25mm and 40mm cannons and replace them with two 30mm high velocity chain guns (big brother to the 25mm chain gun in the M2/M3 Bradley). But that idea got canned in 2008-ish.

Now they're talking about adding Hellfire missiles and replacing the howitzer with a 120mm mortar.

They're still C-130s, just not AC-130s. Original, transport model.

[–]mezzfit 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See the little nacelles lateral from the under wing fuel tanks? Standard transport don't have those. They house the drogues and hoses for helo midair refueling. It doesn't have the pig nose of a MC-130, so I'd say HC-130 or KC-130. I've never seen the stripes on the props though, and it has the tanker connection on the top to refuel from other tankers which HC's don't have I don't think.

[–]jeffandersen 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mystery solved. KC-130s.

MC 130's have an ir ball, and from the pictures i dont really see one. so i would go with HC. Also, not all MC-130's have the weird looking radomes.

[–]reddit_god 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends on whether or not they've been updated or not. The Combat Talon II will always look a lot different than the Combat Talon I, but usually we update the radomes along with block cycles due to our software being dependent upon specific designs.

[–]reddit_god 0 points1 point ago

[–]Lachrymologist 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Last time I was there to see, there were only about 25 of them. Rumor has it that they will be making more [J-models?], which might be a really good or bad thing The H-models [old] are very "open" on the inside. Most of the avionics components are reasonably easy to access, but the U-model [newer]? They decided to make it "nicer", with compartments for everything and panels to pull off in order to access things. If they make a J-model, I hope that they DO get a great avionics upgrade, but that they make it easier for maintainers to troubleshoot and repair.

[–]Fun_Crusher 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If by "they" you mean, the Air Force, the answer is possibly... However there's another version of an AC-130, it's the KC-130J Harvest Hawk. Marines do everything.

[–]reddit_god 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The H model and U model are pretty similar inside, and the avionics (aside from things like FLIR balls of course) are housed in the "Hell hole". Either way, it's nice and open.

[–]Lachrymologist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Troubleshooting on top of the BMC in a U-Model sucks compared to simply climbing on top of the "booth" in the H-Model. Crawling between those two big pipes, and between wire bundles? Forget about it. I worked in the sensors shop, before and after they combined with comm/nav. Most of the stuff we had to deal with was "buttoned up" behind panels on the U-mod, with some of them accessed from the outside. The U-mod DID have one big plus, though, when it came to changing the Q-17E/Q-26.. you didn't have to open the radome in order to do it.

[–]BuckyDuster 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a test of the Infrared countermeasures to fool IR tracking missiles

[–]stratjeff 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

These are KC-130's, owned by the Navy. You can tell by the propeller markings- only Navy birds have the red/white stripes on the tips of the blades. You can also tell by the two-tone paint scheme- only Navy birds have the lighter underside. The Navy only operates KC-130 variants, and the extra fuel tanks (with drogues out back, inferred) support this.

Also, this is not what it looks like when a C-130 is shooting flares in a defensive manner (against IR missiles). What you're seeing here is a jettison of ALL the flare stores (something you'd NEVER do if defensive). Its a toggle switch on the countermeasures panel that overrides all other switches and dumps every single flare you have. Makes no tactical sense to do so, but it makes for pretty photo ops.

As an engineering major, far left liberal, and former KC-130 enlisted aircrew in the USMC, let me say first hand that it is entirely possible to admire defense technology without advocating a bloated defense budget.

It is sweet, or more aptly, visually stunning. It's like appreciating Amy Winehouse's singing while at the same time acknowledging she had maybe a bit of a small problem with drugs.

FW:FW:FW: Angels watching over our troops!!!

(Also I think those are KC-130s, USMC style)

[–]BdotDS 1 point2 points ago

Not USMC. I was aircrew on KC's in the USMC. The IFR pods under the outboard tanks mean it's a refueling model, but not the same paint scheme as the Corps. In fact, they don't look like air force either, and definitely not coast guard, so likely not United States in general.

[–]dickseverywhere444 0 points1 point ago

Someone actually confirmed they are USMC with an article. Source

[–]BdotDS 0 points1 point ago*

It could be just the bad lighting, and the shaddows, but I still don't think they look like USMC. I could be wrong. I have a buddy who is a flight engineer at VMGR-234. We'll see what he says. Side note, however: I've flown on the plane in that last pic at the bottom of your link(the one that says 799)

Edit: Apparently you are right. VMGR-234. My buddy says they look like 'T' models. There is a video too

No, you're right, I was wrong(embarrassing since I have close to 1000 hours on the damn things). Someone on this thread already pointed it out. One of my friends is a flight engineer ar VMGR-234(where these plane are from, I guess) and verified it.

How come so many people know this is a bullshit post, yet still upvote it. Even worse, when someone admits they downvoted it, they end up getting negative karma.

Why are redditors so stoopid? Yes, that means you, person who upvoted this topic.

its bots or they've finally got that multiple avatar system ready (there was a req open for it by DoD, asking for someone to build a system)

wow. all that fake propaganda just makes me puke.

You train someone on guns and machinery, then you deploy them to do humanitarian work? wtf. Is red cross dead? Arent there enough humanitarian orgs that you could have given the money to instead? arent they more trained on how to interact with people?

it is such bullshit.

I work with AC/MC-130s (of which, this is neither), and there are tons of pictures of them all over my workplace of them in-flight shooting their flares. It always makes me laugh, because they only shoot their flares if something very bad is about to happen. We jokingly call it the "Shit their pants" shot, which I believe is the exact opposite of what they're going for.

This is a simple C-130 not a Spectre gunship. But I guess the cuntermeasure system is the same.

Note to my fellow redditors... if flying on a military aircraft at night, and acting as a spotter for threats to the aircraft... do NOT look anywhere near the flares when they go off. Phosphorous burns REALLY bright during an Iraqi night. Knocked me on my ass it was so bright.

I've always wondered about flare countermeasures. I would think that you'd want ALL of the flares to go one side so that a heat seeking missile would home in on the false signature. So why do flares get dispersed like in the picture? Seems like if the missile sees a bigger ball of heat and just keeps aiming at the center of it then there's a larger chance of it hitting the airplane. Any aerospace engineer types around who can answer this?
