This was created by design students, I think. It's not an actual campaign by the Smithsonian.

Wow, the artist - Matt Kapler - had to edit the posters (new version) because it got noticed by the Smithsonian.

If you read this, I wish you all the best, Matt! (I hope this didn't cause any trouble)

Edit - it seems that Jenny Leigh Bee (who worked along with Matt Kepler on the ads) is the one who edited them. All the best to you too, love the art!

The one about Teddy Roosevelt is inaccurate, although the truth arguably makes him even more of a badass.

He was actually shot before the speech, but insisted on making the speech before going to a hospital.

As everydayfromwork posted elsewhere, the creator's source is here. There are Previous/Next buttons.

You thought right - in fact, the Smithsonian politely asked them to stop, and they removed the logo in favor of a Generic "Museums" logo.

Advertising students. They were at The Creative Circus when they made this although they are both gainfully employed now.

I was gonna say. There'd probably be an uproar if a federal institution created an advertisement referring to women as "chicks".

You're right. And it's been posted hundreds, if not thousands of times on reddit since then. Kinda getting annoying now.

No, the actual reason Genghis Khan is related to so many people is that he had several wives, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, All of his Children did as well, and they continued to rule the entirety of his empire (albeit broken into four parts) for hundreds of years after his death.

Long power dynasties tend to put their marks genetically on a population. Genghis Khan just happened to rule the single largest empire in history and Western history classes teach about the mongols as if they were unlettered barbarians when in fact it was the Mongols that virtually created the Renaissance in Europe, instituted some of the earliest forms of modern human rights that we all enjoy today, and were the reason that Europeans discovered the Americas. Christopher Columbus was trying to find the empire of the Mongols when he sailed West.

[–]RedAnarchist 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It sounds like you read Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World.

Saying the Mongols virtually created the Renaissance in Europe is bit of a stretch though, even most revisionists would have a hard time defending that.

You also very much misrepresent Columbus's intentions. When the Mongols controlled most of Asia, trade between Asia and Europe was relatively easy given that the Mongols kept things stable and peaceful across their lands. When the empire fell apart, trade through the old networks became more difficult and costly. 100 years later, Columbus decided he'd find a new way to get to the Orient. So in this case, the Mongols decline influenced Columbus a century later, but he certainly wasn't looking for the Mongol Empire.

Also, the savagery of the Mongol Empire can not be disputed. That was the psychological warfare aspect of their campaigns.

Besides all this, it's also seems very much likely that the Mongols started the black death, crippling Medieval Europe just as it was entering it's peak, stagnating human progress and achievement in that part of the world for at least a century.

[–]st_gulik 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't dispute a thing you said, except I would add that Roger Bacon has said that gunpowder, textiles, and foreign trade were the three things that caused the Renaissance and THOSE were all introduced to Europe via the Mongols.

This is a bullshit just-so-story. The genetic marker was one researchers found in concentrations around the areas the Mongols controlled, everything else is speculation.

It is ridiculous to think that the one mutation they are tracking in modern populations was hatched in Genghis, and not any other Mongol. Much more likely is that nearly all the Mongols in the army carried this genetic mutation, and that every child fathered legitimately or illegitimately (because the mother was RAPED) by a Mongol would have this gene.

It's a pet peeve of mine that historians have sold this Johnny Appleseed tale because the truth would be too boring to write about.

[–]agnt007 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

so much bullshit, its amazing.

[–]st_gulik 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not at all. Go read some history regarding the Mongols, you'll be surprised.

Here, I'll start it off for you: Google Geoffry Chaucer (of Canterbury Tales Fame) and Genghis Khan. See what he wrote about him. It wasn't until the late 1600s did the Mongols gain a bad rap especially after that Murderous Cretin Tamerlane tried to revive the Mongol Empire by killing European Christians and...the descendants of the Mongols. And I'm a died in the wool atheist, but a large percentage of the Mongols during Genghis and Monke's reigns were Christians, particularly their wives.

Assuming world population is 7 billion then 35 million people are related to him.

[–]ex_ample -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Assuming the poster was correct, which it's not. The 0.5% is Y chromosome decent. If you require Y chromosome decent in order to be a 'related' to him, then that means 0% of women are 'related' to him and 1% of men are.

But clearly that's not correct.

No no no, This stat is wrong and it drives me nuts every time I see it. there is a 0.5% chance that you are a direct patrilinial descendant of his

That is, you are a man, who's father's father's father's ... father's father was Genghis Khan.

The reality is, almost every human is related to Khan if you include mothers.

The issue is the Y chromosome. Something like 0.5% of men have Khan's Y chromosome. But if your mother's father's has his Y chromosome, then you won't. Are you still related to him? Obviously.

This inaccurate stat keeps getting repeated. It's driving me nuts.

Radio Lab Explains this pretty well http://www.radiolab.org/2007/sep/10/genghis-khan/

over 16 million men in Central Asia are related to genghis khan

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You beat me to the punch.

[–]ex_ample 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does it really make sense to say that zero women are related to him though?

If you only look at the Y chromosome, you are only looking at people who's father's father's father's ... father's father was Ghengis Khan.

If you look at people who either had women in that chain or are women, then it's probably almost everyone.

[–]kcyakiyaki -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure, there are probably lots of women as well, but the thing is that they can only track that y chromosome mutation. They are not completely sure it is genghis khan unless they find his dna and check his y chromosome for that mutation. he is just to most likely person in the period of time to have that many kids.

[–]ex_ample 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, but the point is that more then 0.5% are 'related' to Genghis Khan. And the 0.5% figure is wrong.

There's a lot of theories on how Genghis Khan died, this one is my favorite:

Later Mongol chronicles connect Genghis' death with a Tangut princess taken as war booty. One chronicle from the early 17th century even relates that the princess hid a small pair of pliers inside her vagina, and hurt the Great Khan so badly that he died.

The 5% claim... is that assuming everyone has an equal probability? Cause it seems like Chinese would have a much higher probability of being related than a white/black person.
