Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

seriously how hard is it to credit the person who was out there risking their lives to get this shot

We don't do this on Reddit. Karma is more important than other people's credit.

Definitely. What I CAN'T understand is how anyone born in the last century could think that this is anything supernatural. But that's another discussion.

Or are we?!

[–]MigratedCoconut 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because we were raised scientifically. Lets say someone in Africa who doesn't even know what science is and spent his whole life with 30 other people sees it, its a little different and not an existence we can comprehend

[–]pandemic1444 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can understand that, I just believe what shadowdude said, that somebody born in the last century in the developed world should never assume supernatural.

[–]MigratedCoconut 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Woops, I never saw developed world in his post :) Now I feel a little stupid to be honest.

[–]Archnation 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But you have the advantage of knowing about scientific theory and the scientific method. Some things long ago just could not be explained with their current understanding. Hell, they didn't even know the earth was a sphere for thousands of years.

[–]pandemic1444 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I understand that, I just don't think that people with the same advantages I have should resort to supernatural explanations, or even people who have seen anything at all explained without the supernatural. The reason I don't believe anything including what I don't understand is supernatural is that I have seen things explained scientifically, or even figured them out myself. It's difficult for me to explain, though.

SuperSense: Why We Believe in the Unbelievable

Might be a good read for you. You really can't say that if you were raised in a completely different environment you would "still" not believe.

Saying that puts you into the "I have no proof but believe me" category, which is a bit ironic.

[–]pandemic1444 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My mother believes in wiccan and witch stuff. She believes in God. The rest of my family are religious. I'm nothing like any of them, but that argument is moot because it's anecdotal. I do agree with you that if I were born in Africa I'd be more likely to believe in the supernatural, but the men who shaped the scientific world came from a superstitious one.

[–]Archnation 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wasn't merely referring to family. Society as a whole probably means more when it comes to shaping people's ideals during adolescent life now than even relatives at an earlier time.

Still, I think you agreed to begin with but you wanted to argue for the sake of arguing. Congratulations, you are no slave to emotions; a pragmatic beauty.

Last April, I saw an F5 tornado in person. Relevant? I dunno. It made me think of it though. It was haunting.

[–]mojito_pika 9 points10 points ago

never seen one that big, but i was driving through a massive thunderstorm in eastern colorado and got to see three of them within about 20 minutes of one another. one doing this full-on 's' bend and then two more touched down side by side. haunting is an accurate description. surreal as well.

You from Joplin? Here in St. Louis we were mightily impressed with the F4 that hit our suburbs, then a month later, Joplin got it.

[–]Horatio_Hornblower 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I live in that general region too. It's like we live on a bomb range, and we never know when it'll be our turn to face a tornado.

[–]SeparateCzechs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel you. Twice now we've had near misses while camping. Once it was forming directly overhead and dumped hail on us. The next time it touched down less than a mile north of us and took down half of the canvas tents on the campsite.

[–]kmreid 1 point2 points ago

Don't those get up to like a mile wide? I can't even imagine what looking at one would be like, unless you were really far away, I feel like you wouldn't even recognize it as a tornado.

Wedge tornadoes, yeah. That's what they say happened during Tri-State tornado of 1925. People thought it was a low hanging cloud, because they'd always considered tornadoes to be those ropey, bending kinds. They didn't recognize it back then.

I'm 5 miles north of the path of the one that took out Hackleburg, Phil Campbell East Limestone and Harvest AL (north of Harvest in Toney). Watched it take out the WAFF 48 radar and tower cam on live TV. (there's video of this somewhere but i can't find it at the moment) Couldn't see it from here due to trees, but when it was hitting Harvest the sky here turned a deep yellow and the roar of it could be heard over the extremely heavy rain. Even without seeing the actual funnel in person it was eerie as hell.

What do you consider cleanup and tricks? Adjusting exposure, contrast, color and cropping could all be done in a darkroom with chemicals. Ansel Adams did amazing things in the darkroom, you thought he just shot and the pictures came out? This is a great image taken by someone with skill, patience and balls. I hate comment like this. You can't fix a shitty photo in Photoshop.

[–]Skull-Leader 6 points7 points ago

[–]sonomabob1 -5 points-4 points ago

My understanding is that there is no actual un doctored image. Any photo is a rendering of light. None are "real".

This is how all tornadoes look as they form. The only times we can actually see a tornado is after it has picked up debris. Since it gets debris from the ground, tornadoes often have the appearance of growing from the ground up.

[–]realityobserver 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not true, you can see the funnel before it touches the ground sometimes. And frequently they just return to the storm cloud without touching at all.

[–]teh_tg 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've seen one just dangling from a cloud way up in the sky, nowhere near the ground, writhing like a snake. This was in Oklahoma.

[–]EHoffman922 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true, but oftentimes it has very difficult to make out a tornado before it picks up debris. This picture is a particularly sharp picture of a very well formed tornado.

[–]tectonicus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not quite true. You can also see water droplets. The tornado is a low-pressure zone, so it can't hold as much humidity. Thus, the water vapor precipitates out into droplets, giving it its white appearance.

The brown part is debris/dust.
