"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."

That sentence contains every letter of the alphabet, and is often used to display fonts.

Thank public school systems who cut funding to computer programs, and don't teach typing anymore.

[–]missfarthing 1 point2 points ago

I had about 2 weeks of typing class back in the 8th grade. I can type 60 words per minute according to an official HR typing test. I'm pretty sure the modern generation can type just fine without a class. Instant messaging did more for my typing abilities than any typing class.

A doggie at rest will remain at rest until a fox tries to jump over him. Unless he's lazy, in which case, he shall remain at rest regardless.

Have you heard of Hachiko? Akita Inu follows his owner to train station to work every day, waits at the station and follows him home. Owner went to work one day and died of a Cerebral Hemorrhage =(

Hachiko waited. And waited. And waited.

Hachiko stayed at that train station every single day for 9 years straight waiting for his owner to come home. Hachiko died of Cancer after waiting loyally for his master to return.

I am thinking that Futurama may have used him as inspiration for that episode with Seymour. =(

Tell that to mine, we thought it was a nice dog for long walks in the park. Boy were we wrong, as soon as we leave the gate he lays on his back and wants to go home ಠ_ಠ

I love him to pieces though.

[–]iBeenie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hah. Consider yourself lucky. I worked at a Pet Resort for a couple years and practically every Shiba that stayed with us was hyperactive and bitey. They would nip other dogs (that's how a lot of them play, but it really pisses some of the dogs off) and then jump away, almost teasing them. If you ever needed to put them in time-out, they would give you the run-around until you finally managed to catch them (which usually required two people) or gave up and had to go do something else.

They are by far the most adorable breed IMO but they tend to be stubborn and hard to train. If that description is nothing like your dog then you are very, very lucky to own a calmer Shiba (assuming you would rather have calm over crazy).

[–]Datrio 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is called a pangram. This sentence was used in Windows for font preview - because with it you could view every normal letter in the alphabet.

Similar, in Polish version of Windows, the preview sentence was "Zażółć gęślą jaźń" - this consists of every accented letter in the Polish alphabet.

[–]tenhotuisku 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does Zażółć gęślą jaźń actually mean something?

Google translate: Yellowing of the self gęślą

[–]cyberphonic -1 points0 points ago

It probably has more to do with when you went to school in the US than where. I was taught this as were most people I know my age. The variation I learned was 'The quick brown fox jumped over the two lazy dogs.'

[–]rocknrollhikeskoo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just assumed it was a typing exercise, about as meaningful as the 'home row' keys are. To me, it didn't have any apparent meaning, just something that helps improve your typing skills.

[–]Atario 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]richunclesam 1 point2 points ago

I use it to test out the feel of keyboards I'm considering buying, or to troubleshoot for stuck keys. It's also useful for Seeing what a font looks like.

Seems like common knowledge to me, but even common knowledge isn't universal.

It's not every letter, but a palindrome, but could you do "A slut nixes sex in Tulsa"?

If an ampersand were a legitimate letter of the alphabet, you wouldn't have to hold shift on your keyboard to type it.

TIL - The phrase that usually accompanies a font display includes every letter in the alphabet.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. 1234567890

i think i read an article somewhere that we subconsciously count letters by their sound. like if i constructed a sentence that has the word "of" a lot. and then i asked you to count the number of times the letter F appears in the sentence you will almost always leave out the f's that appear in "of". maybe the same is true for "the" cause there is no h sound...

either that or you're blind and i should kill you.

That is not a brown fox, and the dog is not lazy.
