So I lived in Uruguay for a while and travelled extensively in Argentina. During this time (I was 18) I got enamoured with the mythos of Che Guevara, naturally. I read Jon Lee Andersons biography "Che - A revolutionary life" which is about a thousand to twelve hundred pages long and reckoned as one of the definitive works. I listened to the Cuban and Argentinian songs praising Che and sucked in the general love fest.

I'm a leftist (a bolshevik by US standards) and for many years (14 or so) I've told myself that even if I didn't agree with all of Guevaras opinions, or indeed actions, his idealism and willingness to sacrifice for his beliefs were still ideals to be admired.

Then Anders Behring Breivik murdered 77 kids on Utøya outside my hometown of Oslo (including someone I knew personally), and I find I have to reinvestigate whether I can still hold the belief that idealism and sacrifice are qualities I can in any way have respect for anymore.

Props to you for having the only intelligent thing to say on this thread my friend! Always nice to see that the concept of "think first, type later" is still alive if only barely.

I met Cubans during my time in the Army whose grandparents were tortured (and other relatives disappeared) by Guevara's goons...

Needless to say, they flipped shit on people they saw who were wearing those shirts.

I have just visited Cuba,

And all people outside of Cuba who wear Che Guevara shirts are douchebags.

He fought in other countries in south america too, so other few people are allowed to wear it properly.

nope, because he no success there. And overall he did some nasty things that should be forgotten even though it's for a "revolution".

[–]Chobeat -1 points0 points ago

the meaning of "nasty things" is relative and i don't think he would consider "nasty" what a fatty americunt of 2011 would consider "nasty".

Alright... hmm... where to start... first of all no matter what is relative the civilized world can agree that no one should be deprived of their basic human rights. I don't need to direct you, you can see for yourself some of the things Mr. Guevara did and said for yourself. Please spare us your witty wordplay and help yourself to a nice big dose of reality.

human rights are relative. for example here in europe, free healthcare and welfare for poor people is a basic human right and we consider uncivilized nations that let poor people die in the streets. Oh wow, USA is one of them.

You can't do a revolution without breaking a few eggs and anyway cuban revolution was one of the easiest revolution ever, they never really fought because loyalist were a bunch of lazy fat soldiers that never really intended to die for a corrupted dictator, so Guevara and Castro conquered the whole island with just a few soldiers. I can't see where the violation of human rights is.

[–]TheAlgebraist 0 points1 point ago

See here's the thing... human rights aren't relative. They're fixed in International Law. Now whether those laws are enforced strictly enough is a very hotly debated topic but I repeat, according to international statute and normative law, human rights are not relative.

And quite frankly, to say that a revolution was "easy" is one of the most ignorant things I've heard. I'm sure you wouldn't mind being one of those eggs next time some need breaking. If that's really how you look at it though, I'm sure you and Mr. Lenin would get along very well.

[–]Chobeat 0 points1 point ago

I can't understand how Lenin is related to the topic. Anyway i made a quote from Lenin in the last post, so i know him well enough, having read a few of his books. Cuban revolution wasn't even a communist revolution. The communist takeover was a political action with the consent of Castro and Guevara (that weren't communist, but socialist, learn the difference, americunt) to get the people's favor.

By the way the cuban revolution was easy because not a single bullet was shot. That's what i was saying.

Human rights have a meaning for those countries and for those individuals that decide to give them a meaning. It's something made by men and if i write down another Human Right act and China, Russia and Zimbawe decide to underwrite it (not sure about the correct english verb for this), they will have a different concept of human rights.

Anyway we were talking about cuban revolution, where no human rights have been violated except by Batista's soldier that were put on public trial for torture and murder.

Actually you made the comment that human rights were relative. But that's fine. We'll remember it your way.

[–]Chobeat 0 points1 point ago

There is nothing "absolute" in the modern law system. It all depends on what you decide to enforce. For example, USA is not respecting human rights inside and outside the country, but noone can enforce them, and result is that everybody acts as if they are doing nothing wrong, maybe except for China, Brazil and Iran that often remember all the violations made by the USA Government.

I'm pretty sure cuban people don't wear che shirts either seeing as communism ruined cubas status as a popular tourist resort. http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/50334_121326814549885_2831171_n.jpg

So... to many people on this thread who feel they can adequately discuss this matter... please do something very few people on the internet do (because no one has to be held accountable for their words or actions when they are anonymous) and check your tongue, admit you might not know what you think you know, and educate yourself. I don't want to say he was good or bad... but let's keep Reddit's collective IQ above that of basic news networks... multiple sources my friends... that's a good place to start... by no means comprehensive... I hear books are good for filling the gaps.
