A spiritual successor would be great. Rock Raiders is probably the best "kid's" game I ever played and really primed me for strategy games in general. A perfect babby's first RTS.

It's shockingly rare, especially in the modern era, to have a (non-educational) children's title that requires more than moving forward, mashing the attack button, and maybe solving an extremely simple puzzle or two. No thought required and precious little risk of losing. I can't really think of any games for the modern thinking child, but it's a genre that could really be explored more - little kids aren't as stupid as people think, and I feel like the sort of cognitive challenge presented by difficult RTS games is really quite valuable.

If I had an eight year old, I would tie him to a chair until he could bring Poland to victory in Hearts of Iron. This may invalidate my opinion above.

Shit the whole LEGO set of games back then were amazing. I mean, where theyve gone now is pretty shoddy IMO, but some of the earliest but best games i remember are this, LEGO Island & Legoland. There was also the racing one that was sort of open world but the name eludes me as it's the only one I don't still own. Hell every now and then i still crack out Legoland and Rock Raiders. The era of genuine stepping stone sized children's games into the RTS genre has indeed passed as far as I can see :(.

You just made me remember Lego Racers! That game was awesome. Building custom cars out of Lego was the shit.

[–]TheAwesomeinator 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And then Lego Racers 2 came along... ahhh the memories.

[–]TheZachster 2 points3 points ago

Lego Racers 2 i didn't like as much as the original. Well it didn't run on the computer my family had, so i had to go to my grandpa's to play it. It was fun, but i never played it until my neck hurt from staying in the same position for hours like Lego Racers did.

[–]duddersj 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Lego Racers 2 wasn't quite as good, but destroying someone else's car and forcing them to run was satisfying on so many levels. Anyone remember Lego Island 3? That was fucking terrible.

[–]TheZachster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never played any Lego Island but the original.

[–]FruityPeebils 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

lego racers 2 was even better

babby's first RTS? That game was rock hard! I could complete Red Alert 2 but that game was just annoyingly hard.

Still very nice though, I wonder if it's possible to get running on a modern computer.

[–]Saraphite 2 points3 points ago

I just downloaded Lego Racers and that wouldn't work on Windows 7 64 Bit, so I'm going to say that I doubt this'll work.

[–]nicesalamander 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i will try it anyways.

[–]Nukleon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I tried, it seems to work as fine as it ever did (still crashes though, as it did back in the day too).

All you need to do is to copy the D3DRM.dll from the DX folder on the CD to the windows system32 directory

My problem with this game was that the images on the back were full of LIES!

A land slide has occurred! A landslide has occurred! Your air supply is running out! A land slide has occurred!

Many hours wasted as a child. And no matter how many walls I reinforced, I could never stop all the friggin landslides.

I used to play this with my brother. We bought the game at the shop at legoland windsor, we were massive lego fans. Played the hell out of this game.

[–]Sejehest 1 point2 points ago

I'd rather see a sequel to Lego Racers 2. So many fucking awesome memories with that game

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Played it on my PS1, it was great.

[–]Ollebro 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Try the PC one! They arent exactly the same since PC is a RTS and the PS1 one was more of a 3rd person game

[–]Saraphite 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aye, from what I remember both of them were pretty cool. I mostly remember the PS1 version because I wasn't allowed on the PC back in the day. That was actually really awesome now that I think back to it. I bet you if I played it now my childhood memories would be destroyed.

[–]Ollebro 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe, I played the PC version again a few years ago and still thought it was really good. It hasn't aged well and I finished it in maybe 1 hour but I still loved it!

[–]TheZachster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

AN HOUR? Child me has spent so many hours on it. I don't think i ever finished it. Lego Racers took up a lot of time too.

[–]Ollebro 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I spent a insane amount of time on it as a 10 year old but when i last played it I finished it really fast. I remembered allot how to complete different levels and overall it was really easy as an "adult"

[–]TheZachster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll have to find a torrent for it soon. I have the original disk somewhere but i would have to find it. By the way did you ever play Lego Island? I just found and downloaded all the songs from it and other things like the radio broadcasts if you want. I could email them to you.

[–]Ollebro 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a bunch of Lego games! Lego Creator, Lego Racer, Lego Rock Raiders, Lego Loco and Lego Island but the problem was that almost every one of them didn't work on our computer. It was way to old. I had the luck to play trough Rock Raiders with 10fps. Now I cant even get the games to start in Windows 7. :(

So no I have only played Rock Raiders and a few minutes of the other ones.

[–]Theofrastus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh god, thank you for reminding me of this gem! This was one of my first videogames. My dad bought it for me after I swam one entire lane in the public pool. It was 100 bucks back then (holy shit o_O )

[–]ugathanki 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think your dad was lying to you about the price...

[–]Theofrastus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have to mention that I'm German, and videogames were pretty expensive back then, but Lego Rock Raiders especially. I remember it being something between 80 and 100 DM

[–]ugathanki 0 points1 point ago

If they had a sequel with a freeplay mode (random-cavern generation and no mission objectives - maybe a survival in waves), I'd love it so much. The worst part about that game was never being able to max out all my stuff, build a cool base and explore for hours through twisting caves.

[–]Zandkip 0 points1 point ago

Blockland is probably your best bet. You can go online with it but I advise against it because it's full of whiny preteens.

[–]Baked_By_Oven 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They made a new toy line which was a spiritual successor (power miners) which is pretty cool, big machinery and all. so making a game like rock raiders but with the new models would be awesome!

I think this game became terrifying to me when I was told to finish within x time or everyone will die from the lack of oxygen. Who puts that in a children's game?

I visibly gasped when I saw this. This game was the fucking best in my childhood. Oh my god, it was the best thing. Thank you for posting this.

[–]dragossk 0 points1 point ago

There were 2 different games, 1 for the Playstation and the other for the PC. I wanted the PC one but got the PSX version instead. It was an action adventure rather than RTS. For some reason the PSX version on the back cover, it still has the images for the RTS.

[–]Obliza 0 points1 point ago

Oh man, this game. I remember when my brother got stuck...his vehicle I mean. It was between the power generator building and the worker building for upgrading workers. He couldn't finish the level due to that.

[–]TheAwesomeinator 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nostalgiagasm. I never beat this game, but I had a lot of fun playing as the dudes in first-person. This was an amazing kid's game, for all the reasons EasonG mentioned.
