Cardiac Surgeon Donald Miller, Jr. explains that saturated fat (like the kind found in butter) is good for you in this presentation Enjoy Eating Saturated Fats: They're Good for You. Donald W. Miller, Jr., M.D. - explains exactly why you think butter is bad for you.

Or this article from the same cardiac surgeon wrote: Enjoy Saturated Fats, They’re Good for You! or this Health Benefits of a Low-Carbohydrate, High-Saturated-Fat Diet

Or this from Dr. Mercola 7 Reasons to Eat More Saturated Fat

Or this article from Gary Taubes, writing in the New York Times magazine, What if It's All Been a Big Fat Lie?

Or this speech from Tom Naughton, maker of the movie Fat Head, explaining the history of our misconceptions about fat: Big Fat Fiasco Pt. 1 Pt. 2 Pt. 3 Pt. 4 Pt. 5

I get it, watching presentations from cardiac surgeons and reading articles isn't as fun or funny as looking at some fake picture pushing the wrong information. And Anthony Bourdain, the famous doctor and nutrionist arrogant tv chef, says Paula Deen using butter is irresponsible, totally disregarding the possiblity that her overuse of carbohydrates is the reason she's fat.

Look it up, triglycerides are a better predictor of heart disease than cholesterol. What raises triglycerides? Not butter.

Cleveland Clinic: "Consuming foods high in simple sugars significantly contributes to high triglycerides."

For me, it has been this simple:

  1. Eat natural food: nothing with ingredients I can't find in plants or animals.

  2. Eat less grain, sugar. When you do, get your sugar from fruit and get your grains from high-qualty, more nutrient-rich sources.

Its ridiculously easy to make your own butter. Just buy a container of milk and shake it for 20 minutes. So milk is good for you as milk but bad as butter? Thanks for this post at least Redditors will know butter.

[–]beniro 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. I don't think milk is really bad for you. Neither is butter. What exactly are you saying?

EDIT: I understand now.

[–]alerise 0 points1 point ago

He is pointing out the fallacy of milk being considered good for you while butter is considered unhealthy, despite the fact the butter can be made from milk with no additional ingredients.

Err, butter is made from cream, not milk.

Cool, now if someone will do this a thousand more times, maybe this myth can be put to rest.

I don't disagree with you but there are legitimate scientists on that list," Dr. Mercola" isn't one of them.

I've been doing < 60g per day for about 6 months now and everyone keeps telling me I'm going die of a heart attack, even when I pull out my blood test scores and show them my numbers are perfect.

It's infuriating.

Yes, I do keep my blood numbers handy at home for this very reason. It's sitting in my desk.

[–]omgpro 2 points3 points ago

If you get upset over the fact you're healthy and other people are dumb, you might just die of that heart attack due to stress ;)

Fat Head[Hulu][Netflix] is a good documentary on the subject, if you are more in the mood of watching instead of reading. Warning: the graphics are pretty cheesy.

Edit: fixed punctuation, fixed Netflix link

Half a stick of butter

One time I was at a pretty fancy brunch and going through the gourmet buffet when I spot what I believe is whipped cream for my crepe. I scoop some on to my plate and head back to the table. I am pleasantly enjoying the rest of my food and decide a mouthful of whipped cream would be a delicious treat. I take a large bite and realize that I had just filled my mouth with whipped butter. I wanted to spit it out, but was not in the correct company to do so. When I look back on that day, I can literraly feel vomit rise in my throat. It could be one of the most disgusting encounters I can recall.

My uncle did this with pancakes when him and my mom were little kids. When my mom told me this story, I tried this, and was not as disgusted.

Then again, I was a really fat kid.

This supports my theory that increasing your cholesterol is beneficial as it will raise your blood pressure so high that your blood will power-wash away the clots inside your veins and arteries.
