I worked at Taco Bell and occasionally I would get tips when the people eating in the lobby would see me running the whole time busting my ass. This guy came up and gave me a five dollar bill once and said "He needs a raise" and pointed to me in front of the manager. Once he left, the owner (who came in that day) grabs it out of my hand and puts it in the register. He said "I pay you an hourly rate, if you get tips, I'll pay you like a waiter." I opened my drawer and grabbed the five and ran out to the guys car and gave it to him. He looked at me weird until I told him that I couldn't have tips. My manager laughed. Owner didn't.

100% sure in the US that's completely fucking illegal. It's petty theft, honestly. The only thing he could do would be to force you to claim the $5 as additional income on your taxes.

When I worked at Blockbuster, if the register was off by a dollar, everyone went insane.

I as an ice cream scooper at the Ben and Jerry's Factory in Waterbury, VT this summer, and we didn't get tips either because they used all the tips collected in the jars to donate to some local rich kid ski team and use it as a tax write off. Bullshit.

So you formed a band of renegade snowboarders and beat the lousy, cheating ski team at the mountain's Winter Festival Race?

Naturally.

Fuck. At least it should have gone to some poor kids so they can ski

They were going to the humane society for a little while, which I was fine with, but then they changed it for some reason.

i used to work at a grocery store with the same policy. one day a customer told me, "If you get in trouble for taking this tip, then tell them the customer is always right!"

I work at Walmart as a CSM and occasionally get offered tips. I don't take them, not because of store policy (I don't give a shit about half of their policies) but because I genuinely just see it as part of my job. It's thanks enough to me that there are customers who are thankful enough to even think about offering a tip. I've spent half an hour trying my hardest to track down a product for a customer and didn't so much as get a thank you and I've spent two minutes bringing a light bag out to an elderly lady's car only to be offered $20. The money doesn't matter. If I took it, that'd be like maybe $10 a month more on average. I suppose it would matter more to a stockman who does carryouts a lot, but not so much to me.

Hey you should check out forrespect.org. It's a new organization trying to help the employees at Walmart. And trust me they need help.

I took a $20 tip from a customer while working at Wal-Mart. This captures how I felt.

A lot of places have this policy now, but unless your managers are huge dicks no one will enforce it if you accept a tip. However they will enforce it if you go around asking for tips.

What?! Am I the only one that finds this somewhat shocking? ITT so far:

Wal Mart forbids tips. Ben & Jerrys DONATES their workers tip jar. Taco Bell owner rips a cash tip from an employees hand.

People get paid shit, we know this. But to forbid tips as if wage is enough is borderline evil. What is the bizarre corporate thinking for this?

It's probably to discourage employees from expecting tips. The employers don't want the customers to feel any kind of obligation to the staff in any way. That person helped you because it's his job, not because he expects a handout.

That's my reasoning anyway. There could be an evil plot behind it for all I know.

[–]Sarstan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a legal measure. If your employees take tips, you must record them since it's taxable income.
I'm sure it's just something that was stated so that the tax liability can be circumvented. If this isn't the case and they try to enforce it, they're being dicks.

[–]AliasHandler 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure it's the employees responsibility to report tips as income, not the employer.

[–]tobiasx 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is, but the employer can also be fined ( i believe) for not enforcing that. A lot of stores will discipline an employee up to termination for not mentioning to them that they got a tip.

I work in the restaurant at Costco, who hold the same no-tip policy. Lot guys are the ones who have to turn down tips the most, but people always try to leave their change with us simple because they don't want it and I always make them take it, cause I actually like my job. My manager set up a jar for the local children's hospital at one point for loose change but the warehouse manager took it away after only a couple days. Never found out why exactly...

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

Because managers have their quota of evil

I used to work at an old folks' retirement home/dinning hall when I was in High school. We weren't allowed to accept tips either, working for minimum wage for crotchety old people that demand that you steep their tea bag for exactly 37 seconds. One day, one of the really nice old men got really sick and had to have his dinner delivered to his room where he gave me $100 for my "trouble." Guy had all this money and no kids/grandkids to will it to.

I tried to tip a girl at a starbucks within a movie theatre. She said if she accepted a tip, she could be repremanded or even fired.

Same thing happened at a Lucky supermarket. I tried to tip the girl who bagged my groceries. Same thing.

You just can't get rid of $5 these days.

No one should be tipped for just doing their job. The solution is for you to not tip when you eat out.

[–]ronintetsuro -2 points-1 points ago

The solution is to not eat out if you can't tip, poon.

[–]FearsomeForehand 4 points5 points ago

The solution is to get a job where your livelihood is not dependent on tips.

[–]ronintetsuro -3 points-2 points ago

And to not eat at places where tips are an accepted part of the experience if it's good one.

Unless you're a typical American barnacle that believes everyone but you is wrong.

Here's a list of some other nations who don't use gratuity in their food-service industry: Japan, Brunei, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam. In certain countries, some food-service workers may even find your tip insulting. Have you considered that "American barnacle that believes everyone but you is wrong", may be yourself?

What's difficult for me to understand is how American waiters/waitresses develop such a sense of entitlement for tips, and why the rage is directed at customers when the tip is "insufficient". Your low wage is not the customer's fault. I know food servers across the US are trying to redefine "tip" as a mandatory service charge, but the last time I checked, tipping is still largely regarded as an optional gesture.

Your job is simply bringing food from the kitchen to my table. The person who bags my groceries doesn't expect a tip. The retail store clerk does not expect a tip. Even the chef, who is directly responsible for how my food tastes, does not expect a tip. In all seriousness, why do you think you deserve a tip above other service workers who don't receive any?

None of those people makes $2 an hour. The waitstaff does. $2 an hour. Your inquiries should be directed at businesses that are allowed to vastly underpay their workstaff.

[–]FearsomeForehand 0 points1 point ago*

My inquiry was directed at food service workers, and your reply is that you make $2 an hour. I acknowledge that's outrageously low but as I said before, that is not the fault of the customer. You knew what the pay would be before you took on the job.

All your rage should be directed at your employer and the American restaurant industry. It's not the customer's responsibility to dispute how you're paid.

Then the workers get fired when customers wane.

Tipping has never deterred people who were going to go out anyway from going out. And not tipping still makes you a poon, no matter what your justification is.

Get to a grocery store and STFU.

If you get a tip of, say, a dollar, then that's one less dollar out there for Wal-Mart. I have no doubt that is the rationale - that's how they deal with their suppliers and employees in other respects. Wal-Mart gets all the money - period.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Since Wal-Mart is the largest corporation in the world, statistically I'd be more likely to work there than anywhere else.

I'll spare you my tedious life story. Just know that it's a miracle I work anywhere at all.

Check out forrespect.org. Were changing the shitty way Walmart runs that place. Down with corporate greed!
