Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

How is this not situational irony? Buys a DVD to help train his dog, said DVD resulted in the opposite of the intended effect. (instead of solving the dogs behavioral problems, it became a behavioral problem).

[–]MissedTheWholePoint 1 point2 points ago

I've always wondered: do you think Alanis was smart enough to know that, in which case whoa, way to play the meta game, or did she simply not understand the meaning of irony and therefore basically just punk'd herself?

She's never struck me as a dummy and surely considering all the people who must have worked on that song before it was recorded, someone must have pointed this out. And yet... still it exists. Alanis, you hurt my brain.

[–]ehint 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can tell you from sitting through an entire class about irony in an honors English course in college... that most people don't understand irony.

Alanis sucks is what you need to know.

[–]cryptie 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, the song is ironic.

It's funny because I read a paper on irony, and it made an example of the song (by paper, I mean sombodies opinion on a blog) and in the end it stated that the song was NOT ironic, but since it wasn't, but the song WAS about irony, it made the song ironic!

[–]okayyeah 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That actually makes a lot of sense. My comment was sorta a joke anyway but that's some pretty good insight.

[–]therealflinchy -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

indeed, it is in fact ironic that you have a dog training cd, that doesn't work on the dog (or whatever) so the dog due to lack of training breaks it's own training cd.

[–]MeltedTwix 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Negative. It'd be ironic if a dog training CD meant to prevent a dog from chewing on things made the dog chew on things more, but a dog simply chewing on a dog training CD? Not ironic. Dogs chew on things all the time, especially dogs that need training.

[–]therealflinchy -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but.. the dog did the opposite of what it was meant to, to the thing that was meant to teach it how. hence irony. look up the definition :/

[–]Vladdangel 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, it would be ironic if you hired a dog to teach your dog not to chew cd's and the training dog ate all your cd's. Still works if it was a person to train your dog and he age them instead.

[–]therealflinchy -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it also would be ironic if you hired a dog to teach your dog not to bite other dogs, and it bit the other dog

scrap that, it would be HILARIOUS.

nah, it's still ironic because he clearly didn't get to use the training cd on it. if you had used the training cd and the dog still chewed it, it would be bad luck and not particularly ironic at all.

[–]TylerPaul 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That last bit is how I officially got through to a friend of mine. Most of the time you are dealing with coincidence. And sometimes simply unfortunate.

Unfortunately it's really hard for me to come up with ironic scenarios except for maybe happily beating down on your kid to try to teach them a lesson about avoiding violence.

[–]therealflinchy -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

haha, i dunno, that's like more hypocrisy than irony. (saying one thing but doing another)

(i know, i'm being painful ;) )

ED: yes it would be more ironic if the dog learnt to bite MORE rather than less, from this dvd, but, it still contains enough irony to be called 'ironic' purely because the dog is behaving badly directly towards a dvd about behaving less badly.

[–]TylerPaul 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How about making your kids smoke a full pack in one sitting if you catch them with a cigarette? That is an ironic thought process... not to say it wouldn't work.

I think the dog was behaving badly towards a dvd, any dvd. It was not specifically a dvd for behaving less badly. The dog didn't know. The dog didn't care. It was a fluke.

Whatever the case, this does bring up a different definition of irony though.

Dramatic irony is an effect produced by a narrative in which the audience knows more about present or future circumstances than a character in the story.

We definitely know more about what just happened than the dog.

[–]MeltedTwix 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I taught this stuff. English and Secondary Ed. "Meant" has nothing to do with anything. If I leaned over to tie my show and instead picked up a quarter, that wouldn't be ironic. Nor would a dog who chews things chewing up a CD be ironic.

Know what would be ironic? A toy labeled "unbreakable toy" that was chewed to pieces by that dog. But not this. This is exactly what you'd expect.

[–]therealflinchy -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no, that would be luck, but if you leant over to tie your shoe, and it was already tied and you untied it?

it's ironic because the CD was meant to teach it NOT to chew things up.

that wouldn't be ironic specifically, it would be ironic in general if it broke. that's a very poor example of irony still.

but it's NOT what you expect, you expect the CD to train the dog not to chew, and the cd NOT to be chewed, but in fact, the cd was unable to train the dog (presumably didn't get the chance to), hence. irony.

[–]MeltedTwix 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why would you expect an unopened training CD to not be chewed by a dog that needs training?

[–]therealflinchy -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

unopened? i saw in case, but not unopened.

ED: definitely opened, no sexy wrapping.

[–]TylerPaul 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not the opposite. The DVD did not make the dog chew anything up. The dog did what the dog was known to do. The dog could have chewed up any dvd. By coincidence it was a dog training dvd. It's not ironic though.

Irony is confusing and made only more confusing when you realize how much stuff appears to be ironic and really isn't.

A flat tire on a cart full of tires is also not ironic. Tires will go flat. What the cart was carrying doesn't matter if your looking for irony.

Now, personally, I think the definition of irony should be expanded to mean these type of situations. Or a new word to replace irony for these coincidences that play into a common theme between the subjects.

[–]therealflinchy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the dvd didn't work, is what. the dvd was meant to train the dog not to chew

the dog chewed

the cd didn't work

the dog did the opposite of what the training was meant to achieve

still irony.

this is a very basic language concept people.

[–]TylerPaul 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, a child misbehaves. Ironic. Someone sucks at their job. Ironic. You ordered the salad but they forgot to give you silverware. Ironic. Failure is apparently ironic.

You didn't even bring up the fact the dog chewed up a training dvd. You don't even think that's important. You're telling me it's the failure that's important.

Give me a break.

[–]therealflinchy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no, none of that is ironic.

i did bring up that fact. it chewed the thing that was meant to prevent it from chewing things. it did the opposite of what was meant to fix the oppositeness

that. is. irony.

[–]tetrishg -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's just failure. Not irony.

Irony would be if the dog did not have a chewing problem, but developed one after going through an anti-chewing program.

What if they were training it to eat compact discs and packaging? Then it's not only not ironic, but a stellar success!

[–]dakotajones -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends on when this incident happened on the training/chewing timeline. It's ironic if the dog had completed the training but chewed up the DVD anyway - because you wouldn't expect a trained dog to do that. However, it's not ironic if the OP bought a DVD to train his dog and the dog chewed it up before completing the course - what he chewed up is a funny coincidence but there's no reason to expect an untrained dog wouldn't do it.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, the irony is in the fact he cannot train his dog as the training CD that was going to be used was destroyed by the untrained dog.

Your "idea" of a timeline would make "Hoist by his own petard" unironic.

[–]assholebiker 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

George Carlin said it best:

Irony deals with opposites; it has nothing to do with coincidence. If two baseball palyers from the same hometown, on different teams, receive the same uniform number, it is not ironic. It is a coincidence. If Barry Bonds attains lifetime statistics identical to his father’s it will not be ironic. It will be a coincidence. Irony is "a state of affairs that is the reverse of what was to be expected; a result opposite to and in mockery of the appropriate result." For instance:

  • If a diabetic, on his way to buy insulin, is killed by a runaway truck, he is the victim of an accident. If the truck was delivering sugar, he is the victim of an oddly poetic coincidence. But if the truck was delivering insulin, ah! Then he is the victim of an irony.

  • If a Kurd, after surviving bloody battle with Saddam Hussein’s army and a long, difficult escape through the mountains, is crushed and killed by a parachute drop of humanitarian aid, that, my friend, is irony writ large.

  • Darryl Stingley, the pro football player, was paralyzed after a brutal hit by Jack Tatum. Now Darryl Stingley’s son plays football, and if the son should become paralyzed while playing, it will not be ironic. It will be coincidental. If Darryl Stingley’s son paralyzes someone else, that will be closer to ironic. If he paralyzes Jack Tatum’s son that will be precisely ironic.

This irony-police shit is getting stupid on reddit. It's guaranteed every time that someone uses the word, someone will comment on it being the wrong usage.

Irony is based on expectations: "incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs". So when you buy a DVD to train your dog, you would expect the dog to behave better. You would not expect the dog to eat the very device you were going to use to train him.

[–]Krutonman 6 points7 points ago

The irony-police are necessary enforcers for the grammar-nazi party. If we don't stamp out every linguistic error in light-hearted internet comedy threads then we might as well nuke the fuckin planet now.

[–]canard_glasgow 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

light-hearted internet comedy threads

It's the more serious threads that annoy me. Intelligent conversations on important issues dragged down to the same clichéd argument because someone misused "you're". It's like attending an art exhibition and everyone is discussing paint.

[–]Phyltre 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd love to attend an art exhibition where everyone was discussing paint, but that might be cause I know nothing about paints used in art.

[–]skarcasm -1 points0 points ago

That's not a very specific definition of irony. With that, anything could be considered ironic because nothing ever happens exactly like it was expected.

Most often, irony is when the opposite of what was expected happens. Because chewing on the DVD is not the opposite of putting it in the player and watching the video, this is not irony.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/irony

And while I agree that it's stupid to argue about the semantics of a word, people should know better than to choose a poor title for their submission. If I submitted this picture and used a word that I didn't fully understand for the title, it's not hard to believe that I would be wrong about its meaning.

[–]akatherder 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because chewing on the DVD is not the opposite of putting it in the player and watching the video, this is not irony.

If it was some generic unlabeled DVD, then our expectation would be limited to "someone's going to put it in the player and watch the video". However in this case, we are given specific information about the content of the DVD. It's a dog training video. So we can make some assumptions and have further expectations beyond "Oh someone is going to watch something on a DVD".

[–]obake 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most often, irony is when the opposite of what was expected happens.

Irony is not a black and white concept. This definition gets thrown around a lot, but oversimplifies how irony can work. It's really only useful when explaining to somebody the difference between irony and coincidence.

A chewed dog training CD isn't the best example of situational irony, but it does have all the necessary elements of irony.

[–]jayknow05 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was the perfect title for the image, the OP incited an irony riot.

As for this it is situational irony because the OP presumably bought the training DVD to help stop his/her dog from chewing things. The DVD became just another thing to chew.

an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Irony is much more loosely defined than what the irony police would like to admit.

[–]scubafanatic 6 points7 points ago

That's not irony. That's exactly what you'd expect from a dog who needs to be trained.

This was my initial thought, too. But if they had the video for a while, used it, and the dog still chewed it up, then I say 'irony' is fair game.

Or worse still, what if the dog had never chewed a video before, and got worse after the training? Thick with irony, I'd say.

[–]MeltedTwix 0 points1 point ago

I feel ya. And agree, overall, going with gut, and the fact that -- even despite all the pleas to "don't argue over use of the word irony!" -- it still bugs me when people misuse it.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I assume they mean "adopted from the humane socitey/animal control" as opposed to a dog you buy from a breeder or maybe even as opposed to a dog you find outside and take in. I generally only hear the term adopted used when you get an animal from the pound.

I'm pretty sure this would be #2, situational irony. You'd expect the dog to behave after using this CD. The fact that the dog misbehaved and destroyed the medium to teach it how to behave is ironic (a reversal of expectations).

My American Bulldog took a giant shit on Cesar Milan's book. I really wish I had taken a picture of it. It was magical. I couldn't even be mad!

[–]fuckingnihilists 2 points3 points ago

My dog destroyed the Cesar Milan book as well. I sent a picture to his Twitter account, but he probably didn't find it as funny as I did.

Mail it back to the company and ask for a replacement copy. I bet they send you one. They'll get a laugh out of it and the replacement DVD costs them almost nothing.

ACTUALLY, IT MAKES SENSE BECAUSE SOMEONE WHO NEEDS A DOG TRAINING VIDEO PROBABLY HAS A DOG WITH UNDESIRABLE HABITS SUCH AS CHEWING ON THINGS, SO THAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT IRONY IS.

I've just taken a sublet that's a veritable San Diego Zoo of adopted pets. That's well and cool, just not sure what to make of the fact that they all - from the crying kitten to the Italian Greyhound - remind me of Simpsons characters, ie, the endangered screaming pondfish and Mr. Burns/Santa's Little Helper, respectively.

Similar thing happened to my mom. Took out dog training book from the library for new, rather crazy dog (was a german shepherd, terrier mix). Dog proceeds to get hold of the book and chew it up. Upon returning it to the library, I would have refused to pay for it. Obviously it doesn't work, right?
