We needn't worry about any of this. The originals are quite available. No, they aren't superduperhires, but they would likely be grainy even if they were. Be happy with what you have and for the love of all the is awesome don't give Lucas any more money for his bastardized shit.

Edit: I can't for the life of me understand any of these downvotes.

Here.

For the most part its just a few minor cosmetic changes that I don't mind too much. But the one that completely fucks over the new Blu-ray release is the addition of Vader saying "no... NO!" during the climatic scene with the emperor. The scene has now lost pretty much all of its impact.

In the original scene at the point where the emperor decides to kill Luke, the focus regularly switches to Vader's reaction to Luke's intense suffering and pleading for help. An audience that does not know the eventual outcome of the scene is left in no doubt that its Vader we're meant to be focusing on. Everything about the scene is designed to build up audience tension and give them minor hints that Vader may be having a crisis of conscience. From the way Vader's focus changes from Luke the the Emperor and back, to the way the music builds as he does so. But not enough is given away the audience is outright told what they should be thinking. The end result is that a scene of high emotional tension leads the audience to a place where they're meant to be taken by surprise at Vader's final actions and the way the music changes completely after the clever use of a single bass drum percussion beat lets us now that.

All of the drama and surprise has now been shit on from a great height by the badly placed overdub of Vader telegraphing his eventual actions to the audience. The single percussion beat that John Williams put in now cannot be heard...

If I can say one positive thing about this it would be that I can thank Lucas for saving me money by informing me that I shouldn't buy the new Blu-ray release. :/

In all honesty, I think the Obi-Wan old man moan that scares away the Tusken Raiders now is the worst addition yet.

Also, they've CGI'd eyelids on all the Ewoks and animated blinking...

i agree to a certain extend but let me just say, with a lot of sarcasm:

OH NO! THE EWOKS MIGHT NOT LOOK LIKE MIDGETS IN CHEAP HALLOWEEN COSTUMES ANYMORE!!!

also: the ewoks and jar jar are equally rediculous. (although i personally don't mind them both)

so there you go. i'm ready to go into oblivion now.

Ewoks don't bother me as they are a side character in the second half of one movie.

JarJar, who is quite possibly the most stupid creature in the galaxy, is in a full 3 movies, a main character of one whole movie, and is made a pivotal senator who [spoiler alert] single handedly creates the empire that led to the destruction of not only his home planet but countless other lives at the hand of the empire.

So yeah, fuck the republic, they got what they asked for.

Jarjar is infinitely more shit than the ewoks.

[–]Xeeker 0 points1 point ago

i can see your point. but there was no animated series on jarjar!

Blasphemy.

I agree. The Ewoks suck as much as Jar Jar, and I don't have a problem with Lucas making their eyes more realistic.

I do have a problem with him deciding to "fix" stuff that doesn't really need to be fixed, while completely ignoring things that really do need to be fixed. Like Luke's lightsaber aboard the Falcon in Star Wars (or all lightsabers in the OT, really, except that one shot in ROTJ they bothered to fix), terrible and inconsistent color timing, sound effects being placed in the wrong audio channels ...

But no, they have time to make the Ewoks blink, or to add a new shot of 3PO and R2 approaching Jabba's palace when there was nothing wrong with the original shot, or adding more doodads to R2 when he gets electrocuted toward the end of ROTJ, or adding Sebulba into Jabba's palace...

So yeah. The Ewok eyes themselves I'm fine with. It's everything they ignored in favor of "fixing" the Ewok eyes that pisses me off.

But of course, none of this pisses me off as much as Lucas blatantly refusing to properly release the theatrical cuts. Because, you know, doing a Blade Runner or Close Encounters-style release just wouldn't work...

Maybe one day we'll get a set with the 1977-1983, 1997, 2004, and 2011 versions all in one box. Then I can throw away the last 3 discs...

that actually sounds very reasonable and now i feel utterly outmelvin'd.

Nope.

they've actually changed the call a bunch of times, there are a few different versions of it. This is the only one that actually sounds like a person is making it, whether that's good or not is up to you. I'm so used to hearing different versions of it, and am always for more realism, so this doesn't bother me NEARLY as much as the other shit.

Vader's scene is ruined in my opinion, and that new obi-wan call sounds retarded, I won't be buying the re-release, because all ill be able to think about is that it isn't the same as the original.

[–]McLargepants 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was about to pre order, than I watched those two leaked scenes. Nope, not worth it at all. If he releases the original movies, with updated blu ray visuals only (like so many older movies have had) I'll gladly buy it, but I doubt that'll happen so whatever.

But, but Leia doesn't blink once in the entire scene. WTF! SHE DOESN'T LOOK REAL! CGI THAT SHIT!

how weird. My laptop is muted and when i clicked to view this gif... I HEARD HIS VOICE WITH THE SUBTITLES!....

:goosebumps:

[–]usingpond 0 points1 point ago

You know, I don't think this would have given any sound even if your laptop wasn't muted.

Oh cool, he's making the original three as good as the new three. That'll save me some money.

Lucas, man, just walk away. It's done. The Mona Lisa of scifi films doesn't need a mustache.

Wasn't planning on buying the Blu-Rays anyway, this just cements that decision.

[–]SigmaDraconisIV 0 points1 point ago

Where TOS and DW also Lucas'd out in a sense :(

60s and 70s effects, need to be left as 60s and 70s effects. Most of TNG being 80s/90s still holds up...okay

the idea of him changing more things just tarnishes my appreciation for what he's already done. these movies don't need to have a bunch of changes or additions (no matter how small) so that they all "fit" together in a better way. we all fell in love with the movies with the way they were and its so disappointing when george decides to keep tweaking them.

What scene is this from?

It's when Toby gets hired back at Dunder Mifflin after Holly leaves for the first time.

[–]TabascoAtWork 2 points3 points ago

These changes.

That's not all of them, either. There's also this, and this, and a few others, too.
