WHAT! I demand more gifs like this! O_O

Edit: The best site I can find for random Carl Sagan gifs is this one: http://fuckyeahsagan.tumblr.com. You're welcome.

He wasn't the original hippie (Ken Kesey and Jerry Garcia were space rangers when he was still but a boy) but he was one of the most beloved.

Smacks of anthropocentricism.

Cats and bees and every other sentient being, and maybe non-sentient beings too, are also ways for the cosmos to know itself.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Humans are the only known life form capable of appreciating that fact, though.

[–]mexicodoug 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you have evidence for your assertion?

My evidence is that sentient beings wouldn't be able to survive unless they were aware of the cosmos. Cats, bees, humans... we all need a minimum understanding of the cosmos to feed ourselves and breed.

I wonder if any sentient beings, including humans, have even gotten beyond the vaguest notions of how the cosmos actually is.

Compare human understanding of the cosmos just two hundred years ago with what we know now, for example. We still have almost no knowledge of how our own human nervous systems process information, and far less knowledge of how the nervous systems of other species process information.

[–]CaptMayer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"We are a way for the cosmos to know itself" is saying that humans, unlike any other animals on Earth, have reached a level of mental acuity where we can look up at the night sky and ask questions about it. We do not need to be masters of cosmic knowledge for the statement to be true. As long as we have both the ability to question the Universe and the desire to answer those questions, we will be the Cosmos' way of knowing itself.

The statement doesn't refer to simply being aware of the Universe, but rather our ability and drive to learn as much as possible about it. Without sapient life, the galaxies, nebulae, and planets would go about completely unnoticed, unstudied, and unknown.

[–]nicksauce 2 points3 points ago

And about 200 billion galaxies, right me if I'm wrong

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]shamansblues 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According to "How the universe works" part 3 there are 200 billion galaxies in the known universe, but otherwise I've also only heard there are 100 billion.

[–]MyriPlanet 6 points7 points ago

The correct term is "Billions and Billions"

[–]mexicodoug 1 point2 points ago

[–]jsstaedtler 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Imperial fuckwad, or metric fuckwade?

[–]mexicodoug 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Imperial, of course. To demand that the universe count on fingers and toes is the ultimate absurdity.

[–]adamhos 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've seen estimates ranging from 100 billion to 500 billion (based on simulations). It's really impossible to say though, for now. And most galaxies are pretty small, not all of them have billions of stars.

[–]king_of_the_universe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the whole universe, which is most probably infinite, the amount of galaxies is infinite, too, as is of course the amount of energy and mass.

Read r/askscience if you don't believe me. I won't go further into this. This is the third time I try to adjust the public (but outdated) knowledge for the better, and I stopped really caring about people being too lazy to look it up and instead just trying to hide the information under negative score.

[–]shamansblues 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From what I've read, the universe is only infinite in the sense that you can't reach the edge of it, you'll just end up back where you began. Anyways I was talking about how many galaxies there are in the observable universe since that's the only number I've heard.

[–]Taishyr 17 points18 points ago

[–]BlazeOrangeDeer 12 points13 points ago

and a bunch of other objects

[–]Taishyr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See, I have no objection with it not being counted as a planet specifically. (Though I also have no... completely terrible objection to including other smaller planetoids/I forget the actual classification please forgive me).

I just like including references to it because I think Pluto (and honestly Charon and Eris and those planets) are pretty cool.

I find both douchey.

There is no such thing as abstract significance. We give ourselves significance, and we give significance to others and to things and ideas. There is no universal standard for who or what is significant.

[–]dinocaucus 1 point2 points ago

An extremely insignificant, completely meaningless part of something that can be subjectively described as awesome by beings that can barely live for a century.

It may be more inspiring to some people (personally I find this a bit vain and ridiculous), but don't you feel like you're losing some perspective?

[–]mexicodoug -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How can a part of existence be completely meaningless?

There is good reason to be humble, but the fact that you exist means something.

[–]Unarmed_Mephisto 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really. You live, you die, and the nothing in the universe cares.

[–]mexicodoug 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, I didn't realize that you had to be cared about by the universe in order to mean something. My bad.

[–]ArcWinter 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, that's one interpretation.

One thing I will point out is that your existence doesn't really give any support to the existence of meaning at all. There's no logical inference from existence to meaning, it's purely an appeal to emotion, which is fallacious.

[–]mexicodoug 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The meaning of my life is the meaning I assign to it. Outside forces may influence the meaning I ascribe, but there is no objective answer to the question "What is the meaning of life?" The answer is purely personal.

My point was that it's just silly to think that the universe is a conscious being, and that even if it was it would be no more conscious of me than I am of a specific cell in my liver.

[–]ArcWinter 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The meaning of my life is the meaning I assign to it.

So it's true because you say so? That is not logical at all.

Outside forces may influence the meaning I ascribe, but there is no objective answer to the question "What is the meaning of life?" The answer is purely personal.

Correct. That outside force is the universe lacking meaning, which extinguishes whatever meaning you may give.

The other one is so pessimistic. Yes, it may be true that we don't matter in this grand universe, but being human is cherishing our lives and make something out of ourselves. Humanity is about the here and now. Fuck the afterlife or who you were in a "past life." We're fucking breathing right now and experiencing all the joys and moments that OUR world offers, don't forget that and just live it...

sorry for the cliche'ness but too many people forget it...

Original is better.

My take on the original: The universe doesn't care. Shit is important because of your perspective on it, and the closer it is the more important it becomes. Don't make a mountain out of every burden and challenge. Get over yourself.

My take on this: a prize for everyone, you're all AWESOME, yay we're participants. This isn't the Tao, this is helicopter parents. If it helps you get through the day, go to it, but don't expect me to join the chorus.

I have no problem with this edit to my original post :-) In all honesty I'll probably add this to my wallpaper collection, which is where I got the original picture from.

From this people hopefully understand that it wasn't my intention to infer the insignificance of one's life, but a poke at the narcissism in certain religions centered around one's self.

I think this waters down the point of the original image, which was that we're nothing but a teeny particle in an infinite universe and to knock it off with all the hubris and arrogance that anything at all was "made just for us".

In the grand scheme of things, we don't exist. That doesn't mean you can't make your time awesome for you, but it's like the pale blue dot. Put a camera on a satellite a couple hundred thousand miles away and all of humanity will come and go unnoticed.

Thank you thank you thank you. It's so depressing how people equate our admittedly puny size to insignificance. Sure, we're unimaginably smaller than even the smallest part of the universe, but you know what? Size, even on these scales, is by no means everything.

The stars are not conscious. We are. And we (including other sentient life) are the only way the universe has to know that it exists.
