"Nobody important? Blimey, that's amazing. You know that in nine hundred years of time and space and I've never met anybody who wasn't important before." - Doctor Who

I like thinking of it this way. Within the mind of every person is a singularly unique perception of the world. We recreate the universe within ourselves by perceiving it, so every single person is a universe unto themselves.

Obviously I don't mean this literally, but more in a "well isn't that a nice thought" kind of way.

Unless that quote was meant to say that everybody thinks they're terribly important, and no one would admit that they aren't.

[–]thewanderer64 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Importance is like meaning. There is no inherent meaning to the universe. We assign and ascribe meaning from our perceptions of the universe. And through understanding of that meaning we assign importance.

I agree completely. We help to shape the universe we live in. All of us.

But the Universe isn't important either. There's 10500 more of them.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What if when you die you actually find out you were playing a video game in the REAL universe and this reality is the equivalent of World of Warcraft for the denizens of that world but part of the nature of the game is that you are unaware that you are playing it when you're playing it. Dreams are actually the logging in/startup process and make us remember images based on data and maps/textures being generated.

Also this would imply that this reality is actually of relatively low graphical quality and in the "real world" everything is way more defined vivid and real.

Add some people are actually NPCs, which is why you get many people who seem a bit generic in terms of tastes and personality, because they are actually usually based off a similar template.

I like the way you think. I used to spend hours imagining the universe operated that way, but this was pre-WoW. So less awesome and more Sonic.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I know, it's a cool thought. Like, what if this is the equivalent of a medieval setting?

[–]descartesb4thehorse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's actually a rather depressing thought. If this is the idealized game universe that real-universe me plays for fun, then the real universe has got to be pretty damned unpleasant.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, think of it this way... the wow universe isn't exactly idealised, but it IS a fantasy. Like, I wouldn't actually want to live in the WoW universe because as much as magic powers and cool armor are awesome they are only awesome in the context of it being a distinct fantasy. If you really had magic powers, how long before they stopped being cool and started being hard work and just another part of your day to day life, especially if everyone else had them as well. Not only that, ACTUALLY having to fight monsters and stuff would be shit scary IRL.

Our world isn't that unpleasant compared to WoW. I'd take dictators and natural disasters over Lich Kings, Demonic Invasions and FUCKING GNOMES any day.

So on that vein, the appeal of playing whatever this game would be would be basically the same as playing WoW only in a much more advanced society. Perhaps people might just want to spend a couple of hours in a different world?

Also, perhaps Tiredness and Exaustion is a game mechanic that encourages people to stop playing for the night... and maybe some of the bad shit in the world is actually just caused by griefers...

[–]descartesb4thehorse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was thinking more of stuff like my anxiety and dyspraxia, and the fact that I can't actually find clothes that even approximate fitting me without buying from specialty stores in another country. I can totally see how our world could be a fun game for an advanced society; I just can't see how anyone would want to spend their leisure time being me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty happy with my existence as a real one. I just don't see it being very appealing as a fantasy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe they live in a society lacking strife, conflict and hardship so they fabricate one where they can experience those things. Although one major flaw in this whole concept is that your player MUST be playing every day. You can't exactly stop playing for a few weeks.

[–]ramblingmystic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is rather depressing from your perspective so let's think some more about it. Do you play video games and if so, why? The reason I ask is because my train of thought leads me to opposite implications. I play games occasionally out of boredom and I enjoy the games for the challenge they provide me as opposed to reading or watching a movie. Why am I bored and why do I feel unchallenged? Because we live in the easiest day in age where we have too much time on our hands and no need to really struggle for survival, comparatively speaking with the rest of history of course. Therefore, it seems to me that if this universe is the game then the real-universe would have to be exceedingly pleasant with little to no challenges, like maybe there is literally nothing else to do. Like maybe we exceeded so far technologically that the machines take care of everything for us and we are like the fatties in Wall-E and there is literally nothing else for us to do in reality so this is how we occupy ourselves. Think about what makes a game fun, I mean who would want to play a video game where you live in a paradise world and everything is perfect and you have no enemies or objectives, how could that be fun?

[–]darksmiles22 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would make an excellent idea but for one flaw: when our brains are affected by in-world events from drug use to dementia to trauma it affects our thoughts and our minds. Our personalities change over time and are ultimately dependent on this reality in numerous ways. Our souls depend on this physical world, so even if we are being played by extra-dimensional aliens, they are very different from us. How would they be playing us if we are different from them? How would they control our actions if our thoughts control our actions and our thoughts are different from theirs?

Maybe they just watch us instead of controlling our thoughts. Maybe this whole world is like a soap opera for them or maybe it is a scientific experiment. Those seem like possibilities at least.

I think Neil DeGrasse Tyson says it best.

"When I look up at the night sky, and I know that we are part of this universe, we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts, is that the universe is in us.

Many people feel small because they're small and the universe is big, but I feel big, because my atoms came from those stars."

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, 'What are you doing?' The youth replied, 'Throwing starfish back into the ocean.' The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, > they'll die. 'Son,' the man said, 'don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can't make a difference!' After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, 'I made a difference for that one.'

This very unoriginal story is still proof that the last line of this image is total bullshit. If you look at the universe with a broad scope the largest planet, largest sun, and largest galaxies are still insignificant. But it ignores the fact that to each person, their own life is the only tangible piece of significance in the universe. "You are enormously insignificant." Says who? In such a huge universe with, at the moment, no other intelligent life to speak of, we 7 billion are still the precious, lucky few.

[–]super_dilated 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The starfish doesn't even know what a difference is. It doesn't even know that it is alive and does not care what happens to it.

[–]ramblingmystic 2 points3 points ago

EIGHT Planets. Oh Pluto... Forever Alone...

It's got Eris and a few dozen new friends now.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea but if you really want to count Pluto there are 10 planets.

Eris is bigger, closer, and has a more regular orbit than Pluto, so it would have to be counted if you counted Pluto.

[–]appealtoprobability 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While it is larger, Eris isn't closer (at least most of the time) nor does it have a more regular orbit than Pluto. Its distance from the Sun varies by almost 60 AU between Aphelion and Perihelion with an eccentricity of .44, as opposed to Pluto's 19 AU variance and .25 eccentricity. [Source 1][Source 2]

What I think you've accidentally is mix Eris with Ceres. While Ceres is only about 40% of Pluto's size, it DOES orbit closer and more regularly. [Source 3]

It's both true and false at the same time which makes it a somewhat novel statement. In 100 years nobody will remember our names, but I hope there's someone you can call right now to tell them you love them. "Significant" is all a matter of perspective.

[–]MadeOfStarStuff 23 points24 points ago

We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers

Carl Sagan

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is great, but just so we're clear, I think saying "You are utterly insignificant" in universal terms is a fine thing to say. It forces people to think of the terms in which they are significant.

[–]shamansblues -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course it is a fine thing to say, I don't feel the need to hear that I'm significant. I just think life itself is very significant. You, me, elephants and bees and whatever there is.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In one sense yes. In another sense, an asteroid could demolish our planet tomorrow and the universe would carry on as if nothing had happened. As far as we know there would be nobody out there to mourn us.

[–]shamansblues 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes of course, size-wise we're absolutely nothing. But I consider our minds very significant and powerful. It's something that's unlike anything else. We might not have the power of making a change in the universe, but we can make a change to what the universe has created, on purpose.

I take you to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward, until death do us part.

[–]shamansblues 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's kinda stupid to call any of the universe's creations insignificant. Life is probably the only thing that has the power of experiencing and exploring all there is out there, so even if we can't make a significant change in universe itself, we're still special and unique.

[–]bstone99 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's pretty cool. makes people realize how small we really are, and how people take life's problems way too seriously. I think a statement like that makes one realize how small we are and how precious our ONE ridiculously short life is and they'll stop and embrace how amazing everything is around us

[–]MadeOfStarStuff 0 points1 point ago

I wish it said "eight planets in our solar system", and "100 billion solar systems in our galaxy." As there are certainly more than 8 planets and more than 100 billion solar systems.

[–]rockhoward 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Certainly many of the moons in our solar system could harbor life or even become future homes (if the human race ever gets its' act together and expands off this planet in a meaningful way.) Meanwhile of the planets in our solar system only Mars is a true candidate for a livable domicile. Personally I prefer to point out that there are at least 50 potentially habitable worlds in our solar system. Then again it is not clear that space faring humans of the future will prefer gravity wells in great numbers.

Perhaps a more telling number is that the Sun could potentially harbor live for 100,000 generations of human life.

[–]mopecore 1 point2 points ago

False. There is no "grand scheme of things" no "higher power" so one's significance is in no way related to the size of the universe, but relative to there sphere of influence on earth.

Also if everyone has seen the Lawrence Kraus vid on the Universe From Nothing, the part of the universe that we can see, plus dark matter( the latter being the greater of the two) only make up 30% of the weight of the universe. The other 70% of the weight comes from dark energy which shows in the empty space so even all the galaxies put together are not even the most significant part of the universe.

[–]christianjb 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, but next to three quarks or a Carbon atom you're comparitively huge. More importantly though- each of our brains dwarf the complexity of any star in the universe. We are the product of billions of years of evolution, not just a gravitational accretion of dust.

Furthermore, as the physicist David Deutsch argues, on much longer timescales, conscious beings (such as us) will escape our provincial gravitational wells and eventually transform whole galaxies to better suit our needs.

(I haven't posted on this subreddit for a year because I'm tired of explaining the simple fact that my username is my first name and middle initials- it's not my religion, of which I have none.)

[–]Navi_to_the_rescue 0 points1 point ago

"Small" does not equal "insignificant." Personal significance is measured in the effects of one consciousness upon another within a limited locus of interaction. I'm quite satisfyingly significant to my cats, my boyfriend, my friends and myself, and I don't see why others must be unable to reach similar satisfaction.

TL;DR: I'll just point to what the Doctor said.

[–]kencabbit 0 points1 point ago

This is awesome, though I draw a completely different conclusion. The fact that we are the only beings who understand what we are a part of seems very significant.
