If you want to scare the rest of the cookies, don't preheat the oven.

It's just a Manji, a symbol used widely across the world to represent peace and courage until some asshole with a moustache turned it 45 degrees.
[–]Keoni9 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
"Manji" is just the Japanese name for the swastika, which is widely used in Japan due to Buddhism. "Swastika" is the Sanskrit name for the swastika. You'll still hear people calling it that in India. In any orientation, left-facing or right-facing, the swastika has had a multitude of meanings and connotations related to spirituality and auspiciousness. For better or worse, the Nazis' presentation of the swastika was not particularly novel in its presentation, as Talitus points out in this thread. Hitler was a spiritual eclectic, and while his adoption of a good luck sign popular in the 20th century did change its perception forever, he did not intend to "invert" it or pervert its meaning.

I see a hooved quadripedal mammal in the American southwest with a mane and bushy tail. It must be a zebra!
[–]talitus 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
It's been done like that in ancient times
[–]4merpunk 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I have anti-swastikas on my elbows, you have no idea the long talk I had with my brother in law (he's Indian and didn't learn about WWII until he was 16) when I first met him about Krishna (apparently the swastika reversed means Krishna), WWII, punk rock, yada.

Yeah, I was in Bali awhile back which is heavily Hindu. I saw Manji everywhere.

[–]muyoso 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Damnit, now I want some Swastikookies.
[–]cheesecake966 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I love how everyone is defending the grandmother saying that it couldn't be a swastika. You can have nazi grandmas.
[–]ChefOfSin 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
"No Grandma, youre doing it wrong... The old Jewish ladies go in the oven, and the Nazis stay out.
[–]92235 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Those aren't Nazi Swastikas.
[–]Keoni9 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
They most likely are. The versions of this picture with the least amount of cropping and watermark-smudging (and hence, probably closest to the original) look like this. They all have watermarks from widelec.org, which is a Polish media site with user-submitted photos. Unfortunately I couldn't get more context than that, but the earliest blogs of this image were c 2006, and always in Polish or German. Anyways, I can see the chance of a Polish or German grandma practicing a dharmic religion or perhaps reminiscing when the usage of the swastika as a good luck charm was a huge fad in the 20s and 30s. But that likelihood is slim.
[–]cb43569 -5 points-4 points-3 points 1 year ago
You can clearly see in that photograph that those are not Nazi swastikas. The Nazi version of the swastika is literally inverted, the arms are pointing in the wrong direction in these cookies to have any Nazi relation.
[–]Keoni9 22 points23 points24 points 1 year ago
They are cookies. You can flip them.
[–]madagent 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
lol.
[–]kramboid 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
3 of them are the right way, look closely...
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
She's from Finnland I bet. I've seen Finnish swastika cookies before.
[–]pcgmrsprts 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
At least shes putting them in an oven
[–]h0ser 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
it seems like it would cook faster in that pattern, there is more edge space.
[–]Dustin_00 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Half of them are backwards. What a lame Nazi.
[–]Repost_Bird 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
She is your Grandmother! Don't you tell her what to do!
Also, repost.

Swastikookies.
[–]Spiro_Agnew -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago
I hate it when people try to justify the use of the swastika by referring to it's buddhist or ancient context. The western world lost the right to that symbol in the 1930s, and if you use it now, you know full well the connotations. Stop using this weak excuse.
[–]kmmeerts -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago
Because some dick in a neighbouring country of mine used it for bad purposes over 70 years ago, I'm not allowed to use it?
It's a beautiful and mathematically simple symbol. The Jews can suck it.
all it takes is a username and password

is it really that easy? only one way to find out...
