  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

Hey Reddit, thanks for upboating my comic to the front page!

It's really me, I swear: https://twitter.com/#!/Matt_Silverman/status/109009272175738881

I prefer attaching 'files' to 'e-mails', too.

On the computer screen, is that just a screen capture of a subreddit flipped upside down?

[–]OnlyLivingBoyInNY 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it might be a Gmail screen, but I can ask the illustrator (who is awesome, btw: youfail.com)

Funny story, I actually flipped the image horizontally to get the dialog to flow better. So the text on the screen (and post-it notes) is reversed.

In my day we searched on Altavista using Netscape, after waiting on that dial-up to connect out Pentium II powered computers to the internet. So we can create our Geocities websites, of course.

Back in my day we hit the Turbo button to slam that bitch into overdrive!

[–]Master_race 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually it slowed everything down, the turbo button was meant for games for even slower computers (if I recall the guidelines correctly)

[–]stillalone 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There were no guidelines.

People made shit up as they went a long. And that's how we liked it.

For those too young to remember, that was how they originally styled their logo before they were acquired by Microsoft:

The service was commercially launched on July 4, 1996 as HoTMaiL; the selective capitalization referring to HTML.

Quite clever, I thought.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

[–]Spem 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I remember correctly, this is technically true (but a bit misleading). The turbo button was there to slow the computer down. However, the computer ran at full speed when the button was pushed/depressed (and the light came on)... so, it "sped" up the computer versus the speed when the turbo button was in the off position.

[–]Creiz 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, this. Actually the Turbo button ran the computer at the speed it should have run in the first place. Turning off Turbo slowed the computer to run applications made for older machines.

If you bought a 486/DX(66mhz) the your CPU would run at 66mhz with Turbo on, and drop to 33mhz with turbo off, so DOOM would not go haywire.

[–]wodahSShadow 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My computer went from 133MHz to 200MHz so Turbo did work! I think...I really didn't know much about computers at the time.

You kids, and your links to entire comics. Back in my day, we received 10 pixels to a comic a day, which we meticulously saved and scotch-taped them together until we collected about half the comic, and then our dog ate it, and we lost interest and went outside to play stick-ball...and we liked it that way!

[–]wraith_majestic[S] 2 points3 points ago

I think thats only true if you are using google docs for free. I think its different if you are a company buying access: http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/index.html & http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/government/

[–]TjallingOtter 4 points5 points ago

[–]gojirra -2 points-1 points ago

First of all, they aren't pasted all over the internet. Second, I hear this a lot from paranoid older people but never from sane and logical people. Can you provide any proof that Google looks at your docs? I don't doubt that they may have crawlers that "read" your docs and compile information that can be used to target ads to their users, but it's hard for me to imagine that a bunch of people are paid to read through people's word documents to steal sensitive information.

That's me in the chair, except I'm unemployed. I'm a programmer, mostly C++ and MATLAB, but all the job posts I see concern internet-oriented programming and technologies I know little about. I'm being left behind and I don't know how to catch up.

[–]Octatonic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you know C++ you'll be fine.

I got work in python / django. I didn't know anything about those things back then, could hardly write HTML. Then later I got work in C# .net. I just read up on it and eventually got the hang of it. C++ is actually damn difficult so you'll probably have the mental agility to handle new stuff.

You could learn django, it's pretty userfriendly:

https://www.djangoproject.com/ http://www.python.org/

If you have the time, you should definitely make some personal projects that are closer to the work you've been looking at. It'll boost your self-worth and you can put them on your CV.

[–]damn_it_so_much 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the advice.

When under the list of requirements they list languages I don't know, should I just apply anyway then? Like I said in another comment, I don't have any experience in SQL or internet-oriented programming. (But I can also start learning Python; I already know about r/learnpython. I assume Django is basically a python "library?")

As far as work I've been "looking at," well, I guess my problem there is that I get easily intimidated. I almost want to be doing nothing but stupid mundane shit... because at my old job, when I was doing Computer Vision related work, I was surrounded by very talented people and didn't feel like I was contributing very much in comparison (despite coworkers telling me otherwise after the fact). I was never good with having initiative, again probably due to the self confidence thing. So this is a stupid question but one I never actually learned myself: how do I come up with projects for myself? And how do I do it in such a way that I don't overwhelm myself with "I can't do it?"

I may be directing my questions to the wrong person. This has turned very stream of consciousness, my apologies for that. :P I guess I'm forcing myself to actually think about my current situation for once.

[–]Octatonic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Django is a web-framework for Python. There's an actual python library part, then there are scripts, programs and other stuff, along with guidelines and conventions on how do thing basically everything. I liked it a lot because it's a really "low barrier of entry" so to speak, along with a clear guidance on how to work with it along with a great tutorial. That also filters into the question of how to come up with your own projects: Just do the tutorial.

https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.3/intro/tutorial01/

Usually just reading and mimicking the tutorials and exercises is work in itself, and will keep you active. If you feel that you can't do it, then take a break and come back later. This sort of activity will often spawn little projects, things that you ask yourself about (what would happen if...) which come naturally.

A good thing to keep things from overwhelming you is to not think about them. I learned this a long time ago. If the project is big, break it down into smaller pieces and just start working on one of them. Like, just to see if this kind of works. DON'T think about the big picture. Not until later at least, when you've already solved some of the little problems and have a little bit more feel for the whole thing. That's my solution to the "I can't do it" feeling: One small problem at a time. Baby steps.

I'm not sure if I should be handing out job-search advice. Just from my personal experience, things went better than expected. My instinct is to just tell you to apply, be honest and see what comes out of it. If that really intimidates you, then take your time to read up on a few things and see if you can't get a handle on them. Learning SQL probably wouldn't be a bad idea either. There are tutorials for that too.

[–]KingBeetle 0 points1 point ago

Have you tried just free-lancing? It seems like "just doing it" is most of the advice I hear in the tech world.

[–]damn_it_so_much 0 points1 point ago

Where would I start? How does one even freelance? Just doing what? Where?

Granted, most of my problems stem from acute fear, avoidance, and my own lack of self worth, but I also genuinely don't know what I should be doing to make an income. Where to look for jobs so I don't have to relocate. Where to look for work with startups. What I should be doing to improve my skillset. Things like that. Every time I make myself begin to look at job postings, I overwhelm myself with how much I don't know what I'm doing.

At this point I'm mostly ranting, but I appreciate your reply. :)

I'm not really sure, to be honest. But I would guess there are some resoursces online.

Have you considered something you can do independently, like app programming?

[–]damn_it_so_much 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All my past programming has been more or less scientific in nature. Read some papers that does something we need to do, then implement the equations into code. All prototype, offline stuff. I have zero experience with app programming, and I don't even own a phone that would run it. (Smart phones are very expensive, both in terms of the phone and the data usage fees. Not interested in paying $300 for a phone plus another $100 per month.) I assume when you say app that's what you mean.

I made a post to r/learnprogramming a while back asking for advice, though I probably phrased my questions poorly. I could repeat the questions I asked you to that subreddit, or ask for advice from r/jobs. But as I mentioned before, most my problems seem more self generated than logistical. It's difficult for me to admit my shortcomings, or to ask for help. Despite this, I think it's clear I need to ask more questions to people who may know things I don't.

Do this. If you think you hate yourself now, just wait until you still haven't developed yourself 5 years from now. You can do it. You really can. You aren't trapped. You can be the guy you hope to be. Best of luck.

[–]iPoststuff -1 points0 points ago

Think about it. If you were born in 1996, you were still only three years old in 1999 when Britney, BSB, 'NSYNC, 98°, the rest of the boy bands were reaching their prime, Spice Girls were fading away, Cartoon Network's Toonami was finding itself, and Tom, One Saturday Morning was on ABC, Nickelodeon was moving past Are You Afraid of the Dark and So Wierd, and much more that I remember in those pre-adolescent years.

If you were five, you'd at least have a memory of what your older siblings/cousins/friends were watching on television or talking about.

Just the other day during the VMA's, this girl(big gaga fan) said me " I don't know why people like Adele, she just stands there". I responded with "that's the problem with your generation, you can't appreciate a classy performance; your generation is only into the smoke and lights". The thing is she's only two years younger than me.

Brings up a good point. With technology increasing at a rapid pace, two years is the difference between one guy using free AOL CDs to dial-up to Alta Vista and another guy logging on to his Verizon DSL to search on Yahoo.

As much as this is going to probably get downvoted, I do not see cloud computing as being "mature" enough for everyday, and private use. Seriously, or has everyone forgot the Sony fiasco a couple months ago? Your data is NOT safe or secure being stored on someone else's computer...but hey these companies want you to think that their service is impenetrable.

TL;DR Cloud computing is not "secure" and won't be until they can keep Lulzsec and the like out...without fail.
