A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

Agreed, but this will have to suffice. I've had my eye on this for several months now, and even more since I found out that Tribes: Ascend is going to be a freemium game. Too much time has passed, we NEED something at least similar to the MW universe.

I actually came to it ass-backwards; my first mech game was Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries. When it came time to play Mechwarrior 2 I was all manner of confounded. "Why can't I buy nice things? Where are my 100,000,000 C-Bills?" Ah, dumb childhood.

[–]Xcalibeer 16 points17 points ago

[–]W3bbo 8 points9 points ago

Get a Jenner-IIC and load it up with heat sinks and medium pulse lasers. Thanks to a quirk in the game's rules you'll now have an unbeatable battlemech.

I remember I use to be in a BattleTech club in 7th grade, and when this came out it was the coolest thing ever to be able to control all those mechs that previously use to be just on a piece of paper and in your imagination.

And then MechAssault happened and I DIED INSIDE.

I was so stoked and they just shit all over everything.

Edit: also wanted to note, this, Descent, Magic Carpet, and Ultima Underworld 2 were pretty much my introduction crash-course into PC gaming.

One of my babysitters growing up was this big fat bearded dude; mom would leave me with him in his dorm room and we'd basically chill all night and play video games.

The best, all around.

There were so many that were almost great, but... nobody else handled salvage RIGHT. It actually paid to carefully target legs, or heads, because you could salvage everything that wasn't damaged, not just some random 'treasure roll'.

I used to love consoles (specifically Nintendo) until this beauty came into my life through my brother. We'd purchased our first computer with windows 3.1, totally bitchin, and on our way out of costco my bro asked for a two button Microsoft joystick that came with the game. Needless to say, I hit gaming puberty and started to notice computer games after that, though the relationship was awkward.

Best part? The heatsink bug. Keep reducing heatsinks and they'll go below zero infinitely. All that extra weight = walking wall of PPCs & armor. Had to put on the No Heat cheat immediately though, since walking caused you to instantly explode.

God, I remember playing a mission in the expansion pack (Ghost Bear's Legacy) and there's a mission where you have to defend a base in the middle of a snow storm. Suddenly red lights beep everywhere on your radar. "Enemy mechs... DETECTED." But where? Radar indicates they are all around you. The snow is bad, but not that bad... you look up and realize, suddenly, that enemy mechs are freaking DROPPING FROM THE SKY.

One of my all-time favorites! I still play this in DOSBox. :¬)

Oh man, NetMech over Kali was amazing. That was the only time in my life I've ever joined a game clan: Clan Nova Cat (later merged with Clan Jade Falcon) in the Grand Council.

Later, NetMech got a resurgence in the Mac community when it was added to GameRanger. I had a blast DFAing newbies until they finally figured out how to dodge it. Unfortunately NetMech stopped working when ISPs stopped handing out routable IP addresses to everyone.

Loved this game so much. I remember my dad coming up with this with the Microsoft Sidewinder joystick. This game actually scared me a bit when I was younger because of how dramatic the game felt... glorious soundtrack, engrossing sound effects, and "photo-realistic" graphics (erm, at the time).

If you're on a Battletech nostalgia kick right now, definitely check out the Mechcommander intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MQPWE_M_EM. Another favorite of mine... never finished it because it was hard as hell. I remember downloading the demo for Mechcommander. On the popular game demo websites, they'd have a warning about the massive download size (e.g. "be sure to pull up a chair" or "keep your modem plugged in overnight!"). I think it was something like 96MB.

Awesome genre.

For anyone curious, look up: Mech Warrior Living Legends (MWLL)

It plays on the Crysis game, so you need that too, but it's a fan made Mech Warrior game, still in pretty early stages but has been public for a while now.
