Happy cake day sir. Do you have a higher-res version that I could print/frame? I like this a lot.

Me too. I was just having a discussion with a friend last night about the connection between philosophy and art.

I don't. This imgur link has been in my bookmarks forever and is the only source I have of the image. Sorry.

Happy birthday! And this is probably one of the most inspirational things I've come across in a while. It's nice to be reminded that one is free to make oneself.

Did you make this? Because, hey, thanks. Sums up my views perfectly, succinctly and in an aesthetically-pleasing way.

I didn't. I bookmarked this when I first joined the community a year ago and still use it on rainy days. I wish I could give credit to who made it but I am unaware of the creator.

I love the phrase "all meaning is man-made, so make your own".

It makes me feel warm and fuzzy until I remember that I'm not any good at creating meaning in my own life.

Design student here. Is it bad that I found myself trying to I.D. all the fonts before I read the copy?

Well done, happy birthday, and thanks for sharing!

''Create your own meaning and then fight and die for it'' ... I find that disturbing and dismal, not inspirational

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

It's a very religious sounding message.

not at all. i would gladly find meaning in fighting for the future of my generation against the increasingly oppressive governments in the world who are working towards consolidating power, economies and the criminals that are running the banks that breach many international borders. I can definately understand where you can see the fanaticism in it, but think of the egyptians who died protesting mubarak, they found meaning in fighting for the freedom of their people and i dont find that dismal, disturbing or (at least overtly) religious at all.

Interesting image... I found myself alternating between "well that's a shitty way to look at things" and "that's inspiring!"

Net effect: inspiration +1

nietzsche would absolutely love this poster...it's how I live my life as well. Happy birthday!

Edit: this tenant is the crux of nietzsches positive moral philosophy. Don't live your life by right and wrong. Live your life and define your morals as one who is painting a beautiful artwork. For example when you walk in to an art gallery and you view a painting you don't remark, oh this painting is wrong. Or oh this painting is right. No, the painting is either beautiful, ugly, inspiring, dark, lovely, etc. As an autonomous being who is free to paint on the beautiful tapestry that is your conscience. steps off soapbox

I want this as a poster. How can that happen?

This is a great image.

It reminds me so strongly of the Incubus cd and song Make Yourself (you can listen to it on GrooveShark). That cd helped form my morals and influenced who I am today. The songs Make Yourself and Privilege are about existentialism, freedom to act, and how we need to do these things for ourselves and if we "really want to live."

The whole cd is excellent, but if you don't dig the music, I suggest reading the lyrics to see what I'm talking about.

I didn't agree with everything here, but I am inspired by the image of the universe as a blank canvas on which to paint meaning.

Very nice!

By the way, there's a typo in the paragraph under "This is who I make myself." The word "remember" is spelled "rembember." Just pointing it out in case you want to fix it.

I always found a simple, properly formatted paragraph to be far more inspirational than this mish-mash of fonts and text size.

It takes away from the message when you format like this, in my opinion.

[–]badcomment[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am not a fan of the format either. The message however.... big fan.

The world is meaningless.

There is no God or gods (ugh. grammar Nazi, restrain yourself...), there are no morals, the universe is not moving inexorably toward some higher purpose.

All meaning is man-made, so make your own and make it well. Do not treat life as a way to pass the time until you die. Do not try to "find yourself," you must make yourself. Choose what you want to find meaningful and die for it(;) live, create, hate, cry, destroy, fight and die for it (oddly shown... not sure if that's the intended format). Do not let your life and your values and you(r) actions (your life, your values and your actions) slip easily into any mold(remove ,) other than that which you create for yourself (sentence break inserted). Say with conviction(:)

"This is who I make myself." (This is what I make myself into./This is who I choose to be.)

Do not give in to hope. Remember that nothing you do has any significance beyond that with which you imbue it. Whatever you do, do it for it's own sake. When the universe looks on with indifference, (I give up tracking these corrections...) laugh and shout back: "Fuck you!" Remember that to fight meaninglessness is futile. But fight anyway, in spite of and because of its(it's(that)) futility.

The world may be empty of meaning, but it is a blank canvas on which to paint meanings of your own(context leaves this suggesting that "own" should be used with reference to something, like "your own life." and the poor word placement almost communicates "your own canvas." which isn't sensible.).

Live deliberately. You are free.

As for the message, it really conflicts and contradicts itself, alternatively suggesting a search for meaning, the futility of searching for meaning, a resistance to futility and a resignation to futility.
I am more inclined to believe that the idea of life needing meaning is unimportant. Focus on life and ignore all this talk of meaning, since it doesn't *mean
anything.*
