Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

I edited that line. And 10,000 others. 3 people read a version of that line and I pitched it up and down to produce 9 NPCs where there were 3 voice actors. It was nifty shit for the time.

[–]weggy 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You worked on Freelancer? May I have your babies?

[–]despicable_secret 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. I was in the audio department at DA and did a ton of dialog editing, recording voice actor sessions, and synthesizing sound effects and things like that.

Alas, my baby building parts were tragically mangled in an H Fuel incident early in development. But I remain surprised at the following the game has a decade later. I had no idea of the impact of the project when I got hired on.

[–]weggy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thats cool as hell. So they blew their VA budget on Takei and Rhys-Davies I take it? There were, 3, 4 people to voice every other character in the damn universe? You should have thrown your own voice in there, just to get some variety.

[–]despicable_secret 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. Ian Zeiring does a lot of voice work, too. I'm sure he didn't come cheap. In addition to the leads, there were probably half a dozen female voice actors and maybe 8 males. Unfortunately, Takei and the others were recorded in LA and I got their files sent to me, so I didn't get to work with them directly. The NPCs were sourced from a talent agency in Austin and were paid scale. I can't recall how much that was, but it wasn't a very big part of the audio budget. but they were all very pro.

I did record myself reading some pirate dialog, but there were legal issues with having a non-union voice in the game so they didn't make it past place-holders. It was a neat experience for sure, though.

It was a great project with a zillion talented people on board and I learned a TON from them. Shame Digital Anvil got folded up.

I loved Independence Wars 2. It lacked trading, but had some cool piracy aspects to the game as well the usual missions. Plus, Newtonian Physics. No fighter jets in space kind of games, or biplane style dogfights.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I loved the rich universe, the storyline, the space ship designs, the battle style and the physics. To my opinion IW:2 is one of the best games around.

Every 4 months or so I google the game just to find out whether a prequel/sequel is announced. But I doubt that is ever going to happen. :(

[–]gbCerberus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The IW:2 team originally planned to take the revolution all the way to Earth, but hat to cut it. :(

[–]CutterJohn 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Far superior universe layout and travel mechanics as well. And ships that looked functional and realistic, not like stylized birds or bugs or fish.

Was a bit light on save points though. That only save at your base nonsense was annoying, and when some missions lasted 30 or 45 minutes, it could get painful. The puzzle missions were generally ill conceived as well. And the UI had some issues.. specifically the map. Finding places on it was painful if it wasn't already waypointed. Thankfully there is a mod for that that lets you sort through a list of the many hundreds of locations.

The advanced patcom was pure sex though, and made up for all the games faults.

[–]screwball920 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ugh, i didn't think i'd ever resort to such cliché comment but: I upvoted the shit out of you for mentioning IW2.

There were mods that added some trading if I recall correctly, but nothing like X3 where you can purchase space stations and manufacturing facilities. But you don't care about that, because you're a space pirate with a secrete base that looks like a miniature death star.

It's been a while since i played, but i think the graphics option were pretty robust too. For example you can increase the resolution to 1920x1200 and have it look fantastic, so it ages really well.

[–]Iridium191 1 point2 points ago

I will always remember Freelancer as that lame attempt to revive the space shooter genre after games like IWAR2 had long since made their mark. I'm sorry, but tiny, toy like solar systems, mouselook controls, and some lame "trading" do not a good space shooter make.

Nothing quite matches the feeling of blowing past a megafreighter convoy, guns blazing, barrel-rolling the missiles away, at like 3km/sec, then coming back to plunder the wreckage. Now THATS space piracy!

If only IWAR2's multiplayer was any good...

[–]Drag00nfire123 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Freelancer gave me exactly what I wanted. An awesome story line paired with awesome graphics and incredibly easy controls. I mean honestly, in space it's pretty much from point A to point B, and give me a boost to get there faster. No need to complicate things. Oh, and let me kill those damn pirates that dared disrupt the trade lane...those fuckers...they deserved to die. I heart freelancer so much

[–]mellonandenter 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Controls may have been easy but SHIT SON, the fight right before and during Tekagis arch was royally fucked up. It didn't help that I only had some nanobots and shield batteries going in.

[–]Jeembo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was the hardest battle of the game for me because I didn't realize that the people with me were actually there to draw off the enemies so I could go dominate the shit blocking the docks and then get in there. Such a cool mission.

[–]mellonandenter 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All the major battles had me on the edge of my chair. I remember when you had to destroy the 6 rhineland invisible alien battleships. I emptied everything I had on one and was so glad that the other guy suicides on the other 5 cause there was no way I could of finished that. Also the music in that game was AWESOME, the music they play in the very beginning when the Order uncloaks and destroys the ship pumped me up so much.

[–]Jeembo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh man, I almost forgot about the music. Insanely awesome stuff that really helped to draw you in.

[–]Drag00nfire123 1 point2 points ago

LOL yea I'm not gonna argue with that, some fights were insane

[–]BonzoTheBoss 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It had so many elements. The story was amazing. Being on the run, surviving on the edge of society, trying to uncover a fiendish alien plot.

And the dyson sphere at the end... blew my mind away.

I only played Privateer 2, hell, that was the first pc game I bought - and with it a joystick and a soundcard for the family desktop computer (Pentium 1 75Mhz with 8mb RAM).

I thougt it was great - especially the cutscenes with Clive Owen and Christophe Walken. How was the first part?

I really do miss joystick games, I also played racing games with my (later on) trusted Sidewinder Precision Pro. A few awesome games I remember: G-Police, Forsaken, Incursion(?), Starlancer.. ahh, good times!

[–]IntergalacticTowel 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The first Privateer is the one I started with. I loved everything about it. I thought the sequel was a depressing letdown, too linear and restricted.

The original Privateer had a magnificent charm all its own. Great graphics (for the era, and I still think the hand-drawn art is fantastic), better gameplay, good story. Building up your ship was done so RIGHT in that game. And what a great sandbox it offered, unlike Privateer 2.

And yes, I miss joystick games. :-(

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I just bought a Thrustmaster T-16000M to replace my Sidewinder 3D Pro. I have to say, it's a pretty good replacement. Not quite a 3D pro, but it does have a very similar feel. That being said, I miss games like that :(

I submit that Tachyon: The Fringe is the best space game ever. I spent so much damn time in that game.

[–]acdcfanbill 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plus, Bruce Campbell voices the main char in Tachyon :)

[–]ajpos 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Tachyon was essentially a Tie-Fighter rip-off. This is a good thing.

PS - It was also realistic in that your ship could be moving in one direction, but facing another. I haven't played a lot of space sims, but I assume this is quite rare.

[–]Beakerbite 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually bored a copy from a friend as a kid and got halfway through the story. Then I moved across the country leaving the game behind. It took me about 8 years before I got my own copy and finally finished the game. And it was fucking worth it.

[–]wrongcards 13 points14 points ago

Freelancer was ok.. but Frontier: elite 2 let you land on planets.
I always liked to land on planets.

[–]jerrro 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Elite II was so great. One floppy disc - thousands of planets.

[–]radelaide 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I spent countless hours in elite 1. Fucking Thargoid's man. Assholes.

Then I got into elite 2. I still dust it off on my a500 once or twice a year. I lost my best save disk though, so it's painful to start from scratch. But that was an amazing game and a major genre push.

I wish desperately to find a game as good as elite 2. Preferably once a little more updated. Any suggestions?

There was a game "ace of angels". an mmo of sorts, which seems to be vapor now, but I used to play it religiously. Since it was alpha/beta it was free to play great community. It was proposed to be as thorough as elite 2, but really only made it to the finer points of dogfighting and territory control. Had starcruisers and everything that you'd swarm like friggin cylons hitting gallactica.

Eve is interesting. But it's not the way a buccaneering space sim should be.

I want my elite 2 mixed with ace of angels :(

[–]wrongcards 3 points4 points ago

Land manually. Fly into atmospheres of every planet. Freelancer was cut scenes, wasn't it? Can't recall.

[–]Crumpins 3 points4 points ago

Freelancer was cut scenes and the cities/bases consisted of a bar, item/weapon shop, news, and ship shop (if available).

They even fucked up the first game. The rushed the release so Digital Anvil had to leave out huge parts of the game (the 'easter eggs' like the monkey and robot planets were supposed to be legit parts of the game). Just look at some of the early trailers and how much more awesome that looks than the final release.

[–]ZeekySantos 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember the joy I had finding those monkey and robot planets, at that stage I'd found everything else there was to be found in the game. When They didn't do anything, I was disappoint.

[–]Beakerbite 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did you ever play Tachyon the Fringe? Its quite a bit older but that was the space sim that got me started. Unfortunately there just aren't that many good rpg style space sims out there right now.

[–]IntergalacticTowel 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bruce Campbell made that game a must-play. And it wasn't bad at all! I should dig it up again, see if runs on a modern system.

[–]Ebola1717 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The story was pretty cool at the beginning, because it felt like a political story, but I didn't like the twist and how it got more fantasy-ish. The trade/exploration parts were spot on too. As for combat, i thought freespace 2 was much better. The battles were bigger, with more varied roles and objectives, and the controls felt more intuitive.

I actually really enjoyed the multiplayer in Freelancer. Running trade routes on PvP servers wasn't just going from point A to point B. My trade routes were winding ordeals through exploding gas clouds and mine fields, suns' coronas, and around neutron stars.

God, it was such a good game. =[

[–]unidentifiable 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. That looks incredible.

Wish the Gatling guns had an ammo supply though, to encourage "only-pull-the-trigger-when-you're-sure" kind of fighting.

Fly in, short burst, fly away.

And sound. You should really only be able to hear 3 things: Noises from the comm, when you fire your own gun or thrusters, and when someone hits you.

BSGs battle scenes were great for having very few noises (apart from the tie-fighter noise that the cylon ships made).

ctrl+f privateer.

Freelancer was a huge letdown for me. I spent days maxing out my centurion, killing anyone who happened by, taking slaves/contraband and selling them around the universe in Privateer. I was so excited reading game rags about the much anticipated sequel and I spent 50$ on that linear POS.

[–]IntergalacticTowel 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Privateer made me a man. I loved being able to banter with other pilots or the station control guys, and the time I spent equipping and flying all the ships -- so satisfying. Docking, walking around the station, getting guild missions ... The second I heard they were making a sequel, I felt euphoria.

Oh, Privateer 2. You poor, miserable wreck. You took away the greatest things about Privateer. You broke my heart.

Edited for an unfortunate typo.

I played Freelancer and loved it. Tried to play X3 and was just in a WTF state for a week until I just said screw it and quit.
Freelancer gives you a single player story (tutorial) to get going and then leaves you to explore at your leisure.
X3 pretty much says "Hey, you're in space... because fuck you that's why". ...and leaves you with no explanation or info to fall back on. Pretty painful way to start a game.

[–]Aihwa 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sound like eve online.

[–]qbitus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I found Eve much easier to get into than X3 TC. Eve's UI is actually logical; X3 TC is all over the place. That said X3 TC still seems like a good game once you've spent dozens of hours randomly learning how to get stuff done.

[–]ouTPhaze 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

X3 actually has a pretty long storyline, actually, you're just free to do whatever instead of the story. Sure, it can be overwhelming, but nothing a couple guides won't fix, the game isn't nearly as confusing as it seems, there's just a lot to do.

[–]0xffff0 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love X3, but you have to admit that the storytelling is much better in Freelancer.

[–]G_Morgan 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah but the problem with freelancer was the economy really wasn't fun. Fixed prices everywhere just meant you would do boring runs until you could afford your ship.

[–]ChickenOfDoom 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember way back when, a few months after release, when there was a bug in the main storyline that prevented me from doing a particular mission and therefore beating the game at all. It might not be that confusing once you know how to play, but it is definitely somewhat difficult to remember how to navigate the labyrinth of menus you must traverse to do anything.

That said it is probably the only sandbox game I've played with any kind of serious focus on a persistent, simulated universe, and it definitely deserves accolades for that. Not necessarily something someone who liked freelancer would enjoy though; freelancer is basically an action rpg, x3 is a universe sim.

^ This... It's incredibly overwhelming at the start because it doesn't really even give you a full rundown of the things your ship can do.

It doesn't even give you a rundown of half the things your ship can do, nor does it tell you that your ship can do 1/100th of the things that other ships can do and can be heavily upgraded to do five times the things it currently can ಠ_ಠ

I might be exaggerating slightly.

Yep... Tried to play... Every time i tried to manually dock to save i crashed into the station and died... Gave up and let it run the auto pilot dock sequence that takes 10 minutes.

Got some mission. Fly to space portal. Point my ship and afk for 10 minutes while it flies there (im on max speed)

Great- go to the next portal at the edge of this area... 15 minutes of space travel (i go browse reddit while i wait)

arrive at the third zone... some ships attack or something... kill them.

Ok now go back to the main base thats 25 minutes of space travel away.... point my ship and afk... get back...

Ok, go check this other station thats another 35 minutes of uneventful travel away.

Every ship was equipped with a "Bend-Time-Thing". After you have activated it time went by ten times faster. You did use this..right? I think it was activated by pressing "J" on your Keyboard.

I loved Freelancer, Starlancer, Darkstar One, etc. Tried X3... confusing as all hell. Also, immensely complicated with a huge difficulty curve and unintuitive UI imo >.<

Any advice?

[–]ouTPhaze 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's definitely quite a difficulty curve for X3, that's for sure.

My advice would be to maybe watch a couple "Let's Play!"s on youtube for it, and maybe look up a guide or two on how to do something that interests you in the game (there are storyline guides, mining guides, pirating guides, trade guides, etc. all over the internet.)

A great guide that got me started for the main storyline was: http://apricotmappingservice.com/sliceofx.html#t1

Message me if you have any questions :D

Steam/Amazon?

[–]ouTPhaze 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

X3: Terran Conflict on Steam.

Don't bother with X3: Reunion unless you just want all of the story. The story doesn't matter as much as /your/ story matters. You can control empires, field armadas, create trade massive trade networks, host gigantic mining operations... It's so awesome. Terran Conflict is a standalone expansion that fixes a bunch of what was wrong with Reunion and adds so much more

X3 has a high learning curve, but once you get used to it, its sweet. However, I had a number of ideas I thought they could have implemented to make it better.

[–]Starayo 2 points3 points ago

Tried X3, followed guides, could not get into it. Learning curve is way too steep with no in-game guidance.

Looking forward to the X reboot that supposedly addresses that, though.

[–]wildcarde815 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I found the 'Terran Conflict' re-rev to be considerably friendlier than the original X3. That said they are both very 'jump in and hope you figure out how to swim'.

[–]fantasticsid 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I couldn't get into X3 at all. It felt like you were flying a spaceship through a 3d grid of cells, which completely ruined the immersion for me.

Weird? Maybe, but that's how I roll.

[–]IronicAlbatross 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Comparing X3 to Freelancer is just crazy. One is an awesome arcadey space sim, the other is boring crap. Just look at the huge number of freelancer mods available, the community is sill going strong!

[–]panzershrek 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

X3 has many more mods than Freelancer. There is a forum dedicated to it on the Egosoft forums. There have been addons that added things like universe wide defense networks, early warning satellites, CIWS AI etc. You can run an entire war out of a rinky-dink light transport using some of the mods.

Space Rangers is a contender.

[–]marshallw 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The translation is poor, but space rangers 1 and 2 are really both amazing games. It does a great job combining tactical combat, puzzle solving, text adventures, fps, arcade style space shooters and trading. That being said, I don't think it quite falls under the category of space sim.

Now brb, going to reinstall space rangers 2: reboot.

Just because you liked Freelancer I highly recommend you check out Starlancer, it's the prequel but it's a combat space sim, no trading etc.

Recently however I picked up Eve Online. Enjoying it so far, highly recommend you pick up a trial.

[–]MrWendal 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The best thing about Freelancer was the sound. The sound of the cruise engines just humming along, the whoosh from the trade lanes, the FREELANCER-ALPHA-ONE-DASH-ONE radio chatter, and the subtle blade-runner music.

It hooked me so bad, I'd never 100 percented a game before (or since). And that was before I even had the internet and walkthroughs. I even found the planet with all the monkeys like the planet of the apes and the other weird one too.

Freespace 2

[–]manole100 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, space sims... The last good all-rounded one was Elite 3. When was that, '93, '94? I'm not actually that old, i've played it in the 21st century. But it had features newer space sims had since abandoned. Like controlling turning the ship with the mouse, instead of clumsy atmosphere-inspired joystick control. It had expansive solar systems; you could actually go around all the planets, acquire an orbit, or dive to the planet. It had newtonian movement and no concept of "maximum speed".

I want a space sim with a return to those ideas, somewhat updated graphics (not that important in a space sim - clarity is better than realism here), and a more populated universe. Of course, time compression is essential for this, so it would have to be single player only. So no, i don't hold much hope. Unless Bethesda wants to get on it :)

[–]symbolminded 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bethesda... right. What could go wrong there? Meanwhile, there's Pioneer, a really promising open source Elite-like.

My friend and I used to play this...I'd be a freighter and he'd escort my ship on trade runs, to the base where the goods would sell for the most. Of course these routes had the hardest enemies. I also remember when we discovered alien ships, and could get there guns and mount them on our ships it would do crazy damage!

Scumbag Redditor. Declares Freelancer the bets Space Sim. No Newtonian physics model.

Kidding. But Freelance was pretty cool. I preferred Terminus and Elite 2. Yes even 10 years after they were made I still consider them king.

[–]remulasce 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Press z, if i recall, and you can shut down your engines and turn around while on your previous trajectory.

[–]heathengray 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's kinda cool.

But in my book a proper space sim is one where you have to be mindful of velocity, trajectory.

Though, I loved the Tie Fighter and X wing games when I was younger. Wish I gave Freelancer a better chance when it was released.

[–]FZK 1 point2 points ago

One of the few space flight/combat action games that was easy for me to understand. I still believe Freelancer has an excellent space combat system. I'm still waiting for the ultimate MMORPG:

The universe, dialog system and lore of Mass Effect, the space combat/galaxy exploration of Freelancer, planet exploration that features both minor strategy elements and FPS elements and the somewhat player-controlled and evolving economy of Eve Online.

[–]Meoow 2 points3 points ago

Friend's story. He was new and the first thing he did when he started the game to attack some badass big ship. Of course the guy didn't even notice it + there was a newbie protection law of some kind. So friend decides to .. you know ... kamikazee the stuff. So he flies into the big badass ship, explodes and now comes the interesting part. Big badass ship guy got banned because of killing a newbie :D

[–]Sagron 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would be more accurate to say that Freelancer is the best Space First Person Piloting Sim.

The best space Sim is Eve Online. It is by far the most realistic and vibrant representation of what a space civilization might look like, if dominated by human beings.

[–]Agressive_Napkin 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Freelancer was ok. Holds your hand too much and enemies feel more like drones then anything.

Privateer for DOS was the shit. No hand holding, true sandbox.

You might enjoy X3: terran Conflict. You might not (it's much more complicated and arguably very boring).

Anyway, I loved Freelancer, but I really which the trading/economy was more fleshed out. Then again, it's not like that damned DarkStar One that waves trading in your face, then demands you play as a fighter.

We all spent the next 3 months playing on pirate servers. I think everyone lost interest sometime around the point we leveled up enough to be able to survive more than 2 minutes in the "asian" themed part of space.

This game is absolutely amazing. The controls, the story, the accessibility, the RPG elements..

I spent SO many hours on the base game. Then I discovered the Rebalance mod. My God. The rebalance mod must've added hundreds of hours to this already unbelievable game. I'm sad that my GPU crashes the game during a mission right when I enter one of the Asian systems.

If I could choose ONE game to get a sequel, this would be it.
